In California, when I purchased my .357 revolver, I had to pass a test and get a "Handgun Safety Certificate". Then there was a two week waiting period. That handgun is registered to me and, if it was involved in criminal activity, it could be traced to me. And I knew the salesman. The transfer between private owners is trickier. I acquired a couple of nice unregistered firearms with no paper. Both I inherited. I suspect a lot of older, unregistered firearms change hands at premium pricing BECAUSE they are unregistered. Still, you have to start somewhere. Just because you can not cure a problem overnight, does not mean you should not even try to begin curing the problem.I don't know where some of you live that you can buy guns without background checks, but in PA every gun bought from a dealer requires an instant background check. You are either approved or denied on the spot, no waiting period. Transfers between private sellers require a check if gun is a handgun. Not currently required on private transfers of long guns, but is have no problem if a check were required there either.
