looking at the advice you give on this forum it appears you don't have alot of experience in anything. I even wonder if you know how to read a manual.
As I said I've seen lots of bears in my travels in the mountains. Yes some have been from a distance, which is how I prefer to see them and there have been times when I have been closer to them then I would like t be. With a gun and a grizzly bear you pretty much have to have a perfect shot to stop them.

Tell me city boy what is your experience with bears, and no watching a video on you tube doesn't count.

From the US Fish & Wildlife.....
"Never run from a bear: A bear can run 50 yards in 3 seconds, or up to 40 mph, faster than a race horse for short distances, and faster than any human, uphill or downhill. Running away will only encourage the bear to chase you."

So, let me put this into terms that even a dedicated outdoor hiker can understand. 50 yards in 3 seconds. That's 50 feet every second. If your bear spray has a range of 15', that means that said bear will cover that distance in about 1/3 second.

So, Westie, tell me again how effective your bear spray is going to be if you have 1/3 of a second to spray the bear when he's in range and that's assuming that you are so rock solid with the bear charging that you are able to spray him right in the face and the wind is blowing in the right direction and the spray is going to stop him.

Me? I'd much rather take my chances with a large caliber right at 50 yards and have 3 seconds to put a couple of rounds into the bear. Even if it doesn't kill him it will have an effect on him.

Like the sign says, "grizzly bear sh!t has bells in it and smells like pepper."

Merry Christmas Westie! Don't ya just hate it when facts blow your argument right out of the water?

" Law enforcement agents for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have experience that supports this reality --
based on their investigations of human-bear encounters since 1992, persons encountering grizzlies and
defending themselves with firearms suffer injury about 50% of the time. During the same period, persons
defending themselves with pepper spray escaped injury most of the time, and those that were injured
experienced shorter duration attacks and less severe injuries. Canadian bear biologist Dr. Stephen Herrero
reached similar conclusions based on his own research -- a person’s chance of incurring serious injury from
a charging grizzly doubles when bullets are fired versus when bear spray is used."

Honestly, If you're defensively shooting bears at 50yds you're making your decision to pull the trigger to soon.

If he's coming AT YOU, 50 yards isn't too soon. How bout 40 or 30 or maybe he just wants to wrestle a little up close, then maybe give him a poke ?

At 50 yards it would be coming 'toward' you, it's true intentions are not necessarily known at that point, if you shoot them then you're are going to be wrong most of the time.

Been a hunter for many years, you'll know his intensions when he comes, decision will be split second. Westie is still reading his manual on bear attacks

Just backing up my statements with facts. I know you not believe in facts, since you seem to thing that you know everything.

I used to have a brother-in-law that was a bear expert(it was his job). He disagreed with the idea of any charge being called a 'bluff' but he acknowledge that most charges end up a bluff. The reality is those bears are deciding what to do as they do it. You stand your ground, they recognize you're willing to fight, and a 'charge' becomes a 'bluff'. This is pretty cut and dried with a black bear, not so with a grizzly but I still think dropping them at 150' is a bit to soon to be sure it's necessary. FWIW, I have been charged by a black bear, I have also charged one of them and run him right up a tree.

Agree Black bears no threat, if the brown bear charges at 50', by the time your gun is up and on him he's at 20 , so split second decision. I have no taste in killing bears, there kinda cute, and presently don't live in bear country, so I defer to Westie the bear expert

One more thing. People who are not American, who do not understand American history and the American political system of "we the people," a constitutional republic and have lived their entire lives as subjects of a monarchy will never be able to understand the concept and purpose of the Second Amendment. I get that now after many years of seeing this argument from people who are subjects of their government.

This thread was started with a graph comparison of support/no support for banning the sale of Assault Weapons in your country. On the face of it, and even though declining support, it still suggests that there is reasonably strong support in your own country changing gun laws. I sure as hell didn't partake in the poll - in fact I doubt there were any "outsiders" taking part in the poll.

Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't one buy a gun in Indiana privately without question?

And to those that took my first post as a statement.....I guess you missed the smiley face.

pretty obvious here that it isn't boating season:lol:

Well I have seen bears on the shore from my boat.

You keep mentioning GUN deaths in Australia. Yes they may be down and home invasions with guns may be down but guns aren't the only weapons out there. Your fooling yourself into a false sense of security.

So school me.....what are the deaths in my country from other weapons in these situations - just so I can take appropriate measures?

Edit:

Latest I could find quickly in relation to homicides.......and wow a whopping 187 deaths by knives and 125 deaths by beatings and guns were responsible for a paltry 68 deaths....the murder rate, by whatever means, is so low its laughable. Lowest on record...yep I'm fooling myself alright!

And now after looking at those stats I see why my brother laughs at me when I lock the cabin door on the boat on overnight stays....clearly I'm paranoid.

I reckon deaths by wild animals in Australia would be higher
