Can't wait to see what's the deal with the bugs is. After all, we have 29 votes for this place. I was hoping to spend may be an extra night there if it's nice and bugs don't eat us alive, but if it gets bad I'll be out of there very soon.

Russ,
I'll be heading to WH from Montauk, so my ride is much longer. But, I'll try to get an early start to be there for lunch hours.

Moriches is your biggest concern, but looks like tides are in our favor for Friday.

What do you think the chances of all 10 of us getting a slip on a weekend is? i'm thinking of going the day before and staying two nights just in case any ideas?

P.S Russ, i was supposed to have a new camperback this year also but the $$$$ went to straighten my props:smt089
I might have to bunk with you!!

Joe, I was going to talk to you guys about that. I should be there by Thursday, its my understanding that the reservations open up at 8:30 for that day. Maybe it would be beneficial if I am there already, in person to make the reservation. If you guys call me and are sure you are going to be there I will make the reservations for all at once. Not sure if they charge the whole amount for the day or a deposit but we can work the money out when everyone gets there. That would aleviate any issue getting through on the phone. I would just want folks to call me and confirm that they are coming either the night before or prior to 8:30am and pay me of course fo any money I put out on their behalf:thumbsup:

And as far as the bunking thing - the more the merrier! Wouldnt be the first time we woke up to find unexpected guests!

I agree, we left it up to the vote. What day are you planning on arriving/departing? I plan on being there Wednesday or Thursday. Not sure when I am leaving, flexible.

I hope you guys have a great time on your trip this Saturday... I wish we could have come. Take a lot of pics so us less fortunate can appreciate your great trip...

Russ,
I'm planning to call WH in am for reservations and will let you know if I need help to hold the spot for me. I might also give you a buzz the night before to have your opinion on the place, this way I know for how many nights to reserve.

Russ,
I'm planning to arrive Friday. The length of stay will depend on how things go, but just in case I have extra night, so we could depart on Sunday.

Rod,
I'm sorry you guys can't come on this trip with us. But, we need to look forward to the next season and put a nice trip together. Block Island is popping up on the radar......

Alex,
Watch Hill received so many votes for several reasons, bugs was not one of them. You needed a place that did not have residency restrictions for either availability( Atlantique out) or affordability (Davis Park Out). That left basically Watch Hill and Sailors Haven. Both are National seashores and do NOT spray for insect control. Check this link and see that Sailors Haven is also "Buggy": http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nps.gov/fiis/planyourvisit/images/2008-06-18_SailorsHavenVC_200.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nps.gov/fiis/planyourvisit/sailorshaven.htm&h=181&w=200&sz=46&tbnid=4jVP3U1xtg5XlM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsailors%2Bhaven%2Bfire%2Bisland&hl=en&usg=__q-RSrcK1AFGLT39xlverOfoUPa4=&sa=X&ei=KmBZTKjsDouCnQeM-MHyCA&ved=0CC4Q9QEwBw

These areas unfortunately have significant wetlands that breed the little SOB's! That being said they are worst @ dusk then subside somewhat. I got bit because I forgot to spray. I met several campers who were using that new "fan" type mosquoto control that clips on your belt and they gave it favorable reviews. That may be something to add to your list if you don't want to spray up!

Russ,
I'm not sure if it is 8:30 or 8:00 am that you can start calling for reservations. By the way this is another reason this marina was recommended. Nothing worse than a long day of travel only to find you have to scramble to find a spot to sleep. None of the other marinas took reservations! I'm not sure if they will let you reserve for others though. I tried it once before and got rejected but you can always ask. What they will probably do is try and leave slips around you free if you explain that you have others arriving. I would talk to the tower upon arrival and explain the situation. They will usually try and accomodate you. We frequently let them know that a buddy will be arriving shortly and they will try and unofficially reserve your spot until the guest arrives. This is best done in person. I hope this info is helpful and that you guys have a blast. Remember if you are staying more than a day it may be worth the walk on the beach one mile west to Davis Park for a dinner and/or Drinks @ the ONLY Oceanfront restaurant/bar on Fire Island, The Casino. Good Luck.

I have been following this thread for awhile now and I have to tell you that the bugs are not that big of a deal. If you have a decent breeze the only time I have been uncomfortable is at sunset for one hour and thats it. I have been there many times and it is one of the best places to stay at. Its not the Montauk Yacht Club, but that isnt what you are looking for. The resturant at WH is pretty good too. Not to mention the TiKI bar. Go there with an open mind and you will have a spectacular time. Goodluck on your trip. Ed

Ed,

Thanks for the info. Many times I've noticed that the bugs are on the hunt only for a short period of time during sunset and then things improve. So, I hope it'll be the case at WH as well.

BTW, would you like to join us?

Thanks for the invite, I would love to. I have some scheduling conflicts. We did our big trip on 4th of july weekend and week after. FYI. Moriches is a piece of cake too. Line up the bouys and run them down on a plane and you will be fine. I went through there a couple of time including at close to low and it was fine. Enjoy that stretch of the trip, the water is crystal clear going through there. If you have on decent polarized sunglasses you can see every sandbar. I kinda lost track of the thread, are you guys staying over in greenport?

Thanks Ed, appreciate the input - I hear another get together brewing out there, hopefully we will all be able to attend the next one.

There are a couple of us staying in Greenport this weekend, Friday and Saturday and then Sunday in Shelter Isl. Can you make it?

We are planning on arriving early friday am and probably staying to sunday. We would come thursday but planning on staying on the hook over at Zachs bay listening to Aerosmith play at jones beach theater. the mosquitoes @ WH are out in force @ dusk and then subside. We did not have a green head fly issue. the bugs are worse near the wetlands [between marina and beach]. we made the rookie mistake to bbq in the bbq pits over by the marsh. the slip we were assigned was on "c" dock closest to the bay and the mosquitoes werent too bad at all over there.
I believe they take group reservations if there are ? 20 boats ?
looking forward to the rendezvous!

Russ
I wish I was going to be out there. I have a softspot for Greenport. If you stay at Mitchell Park marina, be sure to stop over to the "gazebo bar" at Chowder pot Pub. Its just to the west of the marina down the boardwalk. Mike is a great bartender and its a great place to watch the ferrys and listen to a band.

Thanks! I also have a soft spot for Greenport for the past 20 yrs! Thats a great spot.

One of the drawbacks of mitchell Park is that there is not a pool or much to do for the kids. It is right in the middle of the village, which is a good thing, but may not be so conducive for the little ones. The carousel is right in the marina also but how many time can you go on that. Sterling harbor marina or Townsend marina are better for the kiddies, but are a bit out of the town. Sterling harbor marina has a car service that will shutte you back and forth.

We are only staying there 1 night, We'll make do. I see something about a camera obscura. Is that still there and working?

looks like nice weather this weekend for you guys starting your trip , see you at watch hill friday, safe trip guys!

Yes it is and pretty cool, between that the carousel, the shooting water in the park to run through, the movie theater and stores there is plenty for one night but it would be nice to have a pool - heck jump in the water!

Thanks - you too! See you there.

Arrived in Greenport last night, nice trip over. The weather is beautiful, will be on the lookout for Greg. I hope to start taking some pics to post soon for anyone that is interested in our escapades. Hope to see everyone soon.
