Looks like great stuff, Greg. I can't wait for the trip.

When are you starting to make your way to LI side?

We are leaving next Saturday morning. We will probably sleep on the boat Friday night at our marina and leave at the crack of dawn. The first night (7th) we are staying at Mitchell Park Marina, we will head to Coecles the next morning. We will then anchor there for the night. First time anchoring for the night, I have 3 anchors on board now. :wow:

From there we are heading on to Battleship Cove, Newport, Provincetown, ...

What time is everyone planning on meeting at Coecles?

Anywhere between 12pm-1pm?

I hope that some folks (who has less travelling to do) would arrive earlier, but I'll be heading there from Westhampton (going first time thru the Shinnecock lock).

I'm guessing that my trip will take around 3hrs or so, depending how things go at the lock. I think it's not a big deal if I'm a little late since we'll be staying there with you guys over the night.

How're you appraoching LI shore, what inlet?

Oh, I see. I wasn't sure if you going via south shore or the north shore. Upon admiral's request I'm thinking going via Jones Inlet. and then ICW eastbound.

We went in Jones Inlet this summer, going to Zach's Bay for the Blue Angels air show. It was an easy inlet. Just watch the markers once you are inside, I've heard of a few people that ran aground, Frozen with salt did on the way home from that show.

The only problem I had was my antennas hitting the bridge and breaking. I should have left them angled, but didn't want Gary to laugh at me.

Thanks for heads up. The more I hear about these incidents the more I want to stay outside vs. inside. Do you know an area where I need to be extra carefull? I have to make some decisions on my way south, b/c it looks like I'm getting to Moriches around LOW tide. So, I don't even know at this point if I should wait for the high tide or just proceed at 5mph.

Joe,
If you following this thread can you advise on the coordinates if the troubled spot you ran aground?

Hey Guys, yeah try to learn from my mistakes haha, anyway this is the area i ran aground i'm not sure if it shoaled up over the winter or just operator error. my garmin wasnt set properly that night i thought i could make it home on memory i guess (wrong) i was just 300 yds west of day mark #35 and just enough north in the channel to hit the spot. it's not as bad as it sounds in this area i've heard the moriches bay is shallow be careful.
Im trying to get a link up sorry

I went through Moriches Bay last weekend right at HIGH tide. Lowest reading I obeserved was 3.1 feet about 50 yards North of Buoy 26. I went through on plane. Do not go to Buoy 27, rather start towards it and turn to 28 when you are within 200 feet of 27. Good luck, have fun, welcome to Long Island's sand box.

Thanks guys, this sure helps for LI visitor newbie.

Hey Guys,
I just got back from a few days @ Watch Hill. Make sure to bring LOTS of "Deep Woods Off". The mosquitos are off the richter scale there!! I am scratching multiple bites as I type this:smt089.

Todd, what about green heads?

Same here Todd, We were there from Thursday into Saturday morning, We left Saturday because of the pest and including the "Green Heads"

It was funny, on the slow cruise out. there were a good 20 of the Green Heads swarming all over the place.

Our first time there, place is pretty but needs a Play-ground for the kids. And needs to spray.

Alex,
Funny thing, the past couple of times I went there the green Heads were horrible but the mosquitos weren't bad. I think it was because it was breezy those times. This time I went over Friday morning and the Green heads were really not bad. By Sunday though they were back in force!! With the relentless mosquitos it makes for a bad combination. otherwise the ocean was FLAT, good swimming with the kids.

MaddyDean,
I agree with you. A playground for the kids would be awesome. That is one of the reasons my wife prefers to go to Davis Park even though we rock and roll more in that marina. I also wish they would spray but the feds won't do it.

Brian,
Looks like the tides work against my schedule. I used LST time zone, I think this is correct selection.

If I start my day early, regardless what inlet (jones, FI, or moriches) I choose it looks like I'll be in the moriches area at dead low tide. From what I understand the troubled spots will have less than 2' of water. What do you think is best plan of action for me, spend some time somewhere and wait for 6pm or go around to Shinnecock Inlet and comeback west to Westhampton (my first stop in LI)? The only other issue is that if I wait for 6pm I may get to WH around 7pm or so. This leaves almost no time to tour the area and would make it like a quick sleep over stop.

I just downloaded TEXT version and the time is a little off:

This is the reason why i voted against watch hill , the only time we spent there we where attacked to the point of running to the cabin and staying there all night, what fun is that? we couldnt leave fast enough the next morning. I'm hoping for a better stay this time or it may be the last time I see watch hill.:smt013

Alex

I sent you a PM, give me a call you have a few choices. I'm at Coecles Harbor now, headed for Greenport Wednesday morning. I'll be transiting Moriches Bay from the East on the afternoon tide Saturday so we may pass each other. Talk soon.

Brian, I just replied to PM and will try to reach you tomorrow.

Wow, I was concerned about those bugs. With any luck we will have some wind combined with lots of spray and a new screened camper back we will survive, it may be my first and last visit there too!

The folks with experience please chime in - I am approaching WH from the East, arriving at Westhampton dock first for a night or two and then heading to Watch Hill. I will plan to also get local advice from the dock master and leave at high tide. Anyone know about how long that ride is? Is it clearly marked?

What do you think the chances of all 10 of us getting a slip on a weekend is? i'm thinking of going the day before and staying two nights just in case any ideas?

P.S Russ, i was supposed to have a new camperback this year also but the $$$$ went to straighten my props:smt089
I might have to bunk with you!!
