Alex and I are starting this thread to firm up some plans to meet this August. All are welcome and we are open to ideas and suggestions - the more the merrier!! :smt038

Thus far I think we have established a raft on August 8, a Sunday, in Coecles Harbor, Shelter Island. Of course folks can come earlier and stay longer, its an open anchorage - just save room for us!
In addition we will also plan to meet on Friday the 13th at Watch Hill on Fire Island. I actually plan to be there starting the 11th through the 14th or 15th.

Alex - please jump in and add/delete at will. As I stated earlier all are welcome and please join in!! :smt001

Can you make it to Shelter in August?

FYI I will be in Block June 29 thru July 9 then in New London for Sailfest and fireworks thru the 11th if you are anyone is interested.

In addition we will also plan to meet on Friday the 13th at Atlantique Marina on the South Shore. This may be a little more difficult to plan. My understanding is that they do not take reservations. I actually plan to be there starting the 11th through the 14th or 15th. Maybe if someone local could take the lead and see if they will accomadate us?

Russ,

Thanks for starting the thread. I think this is a pretty good that we have two dates in mind, which allows us to have plan A (August 8, a Sunday, in Coecles Harbor )
Shelter_Island_Coecles_Harbor.jpg

and plan B (Friday the 13th at Atlantique Marina)as rain date. I think that we should try to make the August 8 in Coecles Harbor as our primary date, b/c it’ll require minimum efforts and reservations commitments. As with any raft all one need to do is show up and tie up to the raft. With having the group at a marina this is where it gets just a little more complicated b/c we’ll need to know exact count and we would most likely need to have a group lead keeping track of everything. None of this is an issue except that, as I understood, Atlantique doesn’t take reservations. I wouldn’t feel comfortable travelling long ways without having confirmed reservation, especially for a group. At this point let’s hear some feedback from folks who are interested in participating and we’ll need some advice from local members for suggesting a better place that can accommodate the group.

It would be great if someone with local knowledge (BMAC, Rocket do you guys think you could make it?) to take the lead, since Russ and I are new to the area and travelling long ways (I’m about 100+ miles from the place) to get there.

I hope yours is better than my get together at Block Island......two boats.....Atunamatata (Dave) and me Wet Paint......Dave one the best drink contest with a Miller lite and received the CSR Burgee......How creative......

Sorry to hear that. If you could join us in LI we'll 100% bit the 2 boats raft-up record...LOL.

Alex, i posted a message on great south bay boaters club, I joined last month, to see if anyone could help in the planning of your trip. Since i am fairly new at this but am willing to help. I liked Atlantique last year. for us the marina scene is a little easier than rafting up (just our opinion) but love the idea of meeting new people keep pushing this thing!! (p.s.) i found a website i've been using called activecaptain.com great for planning a cruise check it out

Joe thanks for trying to help organizing the event. I think we should start with basics like having a vote for where people prefer to hold the event RAFT or MARINA. Knowing how many boats are attending is the key.

So, WHO WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE don't be shy.

Russ,
Do you know how to add a pole to the thread?

Hey guys, Got the message on the new thread. Hope the turn out is better than Wetpaints experience. I have not ventured to Atlantique but can definately make it. FYI these town marinas are tough to get into from fri. afternoon until sunday as a rule of thumb. I will prob head over on thurs to make sure I get a slip. I am not an Islip town resident so I don't know what the fee is. My bud, who is a CSR member frequents that marina and can possibly shed some light. I found this little editorial when I googled Atlantique Fire Island... http://www.loving-long-island.com/atlantique.html . Worth a look. Looking forward to the season! Thanks for starting this thread! If I can help let me know. Todd

Todd,
I guess, I can only say that this all up to us. Those who will join will have fun......everyone else . This event is offering the opportunity for CSR members to do what they like best (at least for majority), which is take a boat trips, meet friends and have a great time. For those who choose to stay at the dock, so be it. For those who don't feel comfortable travelling on their own a group trip from point A to the meeting point could be organized. So, we've got everything we need to make it happen we just need to get out and do it. I always remember Royal Caribbean's motto "Get Out There" and I try to do just that.

Alex, I vote for both plan A and B. Those that can make one or the other or both, great! I plan to be at both. I will be at Shelter by Saturday or Sunday and I should be at Atlantique by Wednesday thru Saturday, if its possible to hold or reserve anything I will if they let me but I think its first come first serve so if folks can get there I/we will see them there. However I do agree with you that a raft is the easiest but one time and place may work better for some than others so lets do both - its more or less an informal gathering so why not? Can you make both?
Regarding the pole, I dont have a clue do you? Do we need one if we do both?

Joe, Todd, thanks for jumping in - take an equal part and invite everyone you know, make it yours! What do you guys think?

:smt021I think I am a tool.:smt021 It's a good thing my wife doesn't read my posts, she would be less than happy.:smt013 Aug 11th is our 10 year anniversary and we've been looking @ trips for about 2 weeks now. Probably going to be on the water only on a cruise ship to Bermuda! :thumbsup:I'm sorry guys. I really wanted to hook up. :smt089I will still be happy to help anyway I can! You know you can reserve a slip in the am of the day you're going to arrive if you go to Watch Hill. Its a bit east of Atlantique and the showers are NOT hot, but you can call in the am if you want a slip. Just a thought! Todd

Russ,
As you may notice from my trip planning thread I'm scheduled to be at Shelter Island on Sunday and spend the night on the hook. As for Friday at Atlantique, if this is marina that doesn't take reservations and gets filled up quickly our chances are slim and I would choose something else instead. I think it's best to contact them directly to get necessary details. I'll try to get in touch with them tomorrow and see what they can recommend as the best way to handle such events. Anyway, according to my plan I'm scheduled to travel from Montauk to Fire Island on Friday, so as you can imagine it'll take a while (I'm going ICW). I'm sure that on Friday late afternoon it'll be very hard to find a spot at Atlantique, so having reservations is the way to go. I guess, an option s to call 8:01am to be first one, but if they're booked from previous nights it'll be huge bummer. I wouldn't want to be in position of travelling 55-60nm and having no place to stay.

I don't know how to add a pole to an existing thread, but I'm trying to get some info on that.

Todd,
Sorry your plans have a conflict. Who knows, may be your dates will play in the way you can catch up with us.

Alex, thats the beauty of it, I will already be there. You could call me and confirm your coming in sometime Friday, i will be there at 8:01am to book and pay for your reservation - catch up with me when you get there. How many boats are with you? Its not an expensive place, they have 150 slips and there is an anchorage on both sides of the marina. Its really in a perfect, quiet spot with lots of action close by.

Todd - too bad, hopefully you can catch up.

Russ, thank you. Since you have first hand experience in that place it makes a huge difference. I knew that they have 150 slips but I wasn't aware that they're all transient slips. Having an anchorage area right there is a huge plus, which gives me great confidence that I'll have a backup plan if they run out of space. At this point I'm sold for Atlantique.

At this time I haven't got any confirmation from others, but I'm sure if anyone will fianlly decide to join it'll be only couple of boats, otherwise I'll be going solo. It's only February with snow on the ground and I'm sure that for some folks it's very difficult to plan so much in advance. Chances are when the boats are in the water the planning mode of our local captains will change as well. :)

I have never been there but I have talked to many folks and read a lot and am confident that its the right spot. Its not a holiday week but it could certainly be busy but if I get there on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest I will have some time to get the lay of the land and get some spots with Joe. And like you said, very worst scenerio one of the anchorages and we do a dink shuttle.
I assume you are also still planning the raft at Shelter as well?

Joe, sounds great, appreciate the help and looking forward to meeting you.

Thanks guys, nothings in stone yet......I'll see if I can manipulate the schedule

Russ, since you have stayed @ Atlantique, is it possible to "save " slips? The two marinas that I am familiar with, WH & Davis Park, do not let you even pay for a slip w/o the vessel in it. Of course you can reserve WH but if your there and want to save the slip next to you for a bud it's "Sorry Charlie". I put a call out to my bud who does alot of Atlantique boating to get his feedback. ......Todd

I just tried calling Atlantique (Atlantique Marina dockmaster: 631-583-8610) to get more details and got no where. Does anyone know if they're closed for the winter season?

Hey Alex,
Bad news, I spoke with my bud who said non-residents can't get in there on the wkends. I did some footwork and reached a woman named Andrea ( 631-224-5648) in the Town of Islip Parks dept. She said if its not busy non residents are allowed in mon-thurs during the season but will be asked to leave before friday. The towns website doesn't say anything about this marina and is actually pretty lame... http://townofislip-ny.gov/ I still say your best bet is Watch Hill. At least you can call in the am, speed dial may be required, to reserve your slip. Nat'l seashore so no restrictions..... Todd
