The death of my 340DA - Roof collapse at SMYC

I've taken a look at the ebay boat - great idea Ken!

I'm sure that there would be lots of CSR members wanting to buy parts off this boat too (after you take the arch and whatever else you want). After that, you could list it on ebay again as a unit for parts or just scrap it.

The key is being able to buy your boat back and get this one at the right price since you'll also be looking at transportation, yard storage, labour, and possible scrap charges. It just might be a viable option.

If it was me and I had no plans on getting a larger boat, I would move on this in a heartbeat. The insurance company doesn't want his dead boat, so I am sure that they would accept his offer to recoup some of their losses. He would get to strip out all and / or any parts that he could use on the new boat. There are a number of things to factor into this scenario such as transportation of the E-Bay boat, boat yard fees for re & re of the engines, etc, etc. If he plays his cards right, I am sure that he can come out of this with lots of $$ to spare.

A used engine hatch for that 340 on e-bay if you could find one would be about $3000.00. I have been told. What are the transmissions worth if they are in good operating condition? Remenber you are pricing parts on what was originally a $200,000.00 boat.

Alex,
I have been following this thread from its inception but have not chosen to post until now. First I am truly sorry as are others that your boat has been totalled. I imagine it's like loosing a friend.

Others have suggested the eBay option. I am also very surprised that a spare part arch from say a 2005 could not somehow be crafted to fit your 2002. If so this might be a another option to what others have suggested.

However, I am curious as to what basis the insurance company will pay you for this total loss. Is it agreed value that you originally paid, book or replacement value? Next is the settlement amount enough to purchase another used 2002 340 or newer one? I believe that I and perhaps others are interested in how an insurance company settles for a complete loss like yours. I am also

Sorry to here about your loss... There is a couple of things you might want to consider... There are places where people remove their arches to clear bridges... Near where I live in Bayville, NJ there is a waterfront community that has a bridge that a 340 without an arch could fit under. Maybe one of these guys who remover their arch want to sell it to you... You could use the boat without an arch. You could have an aluminum arch made, and turn you DA into an amberjack. You could buy back your boat and salvage it yourself on CSR. I could use a new boot door. Your generator is worth $3K. You could take the insurance money and buy another boat.

There's a process called "splashing" where you fabricate new parts by using an existing boat to make new female molds. It might be possible for your arch.

Problem is, you need someone else's boat (with the exact same arch as your deceased one) to do it. The arch would need to be de-rigged, as well.

So, IF you might know someone else with the same boat, that would allow you to "use" theirs for this process (and you'd need to make it worth their while aside from the de-rigging/re-rigging costs) it might be feasible.

All depends if you can find a boat to do it (maybe the one on Ebay?), whether a fiberglass shop thinks it's possible and at what cost, what the "buy back" cost is for your boat, and lastly- how badly you want to keep it.

Good luck.

Gents,
I appreciate the thought and suggestions. the decision on our 340 has been made and I agree with it. We looked at some or all of the above options. Once we are through the process my family will look at another boat and we go on another day.

Thank you all ... will keep you updated. I really appreciate your thoughts and compassion. It was a bit traumatic, especially for our three year old son who is now just getting old enough to "connect the dots" in his mind and realize how much family fun the boat was, also now seeing it destroyed. he keeps asking when we can go to the boat and when its gong to be fixed, also now making the connection to how much fun he had last summer. So he is looking forward to "boat shopping" now. My wife also approeciated the kind words from all of you.

Alex, If you're ever up this way with your family ?? [Oneida Lake NY ]
You're more than welcome to use my boat.

Have been working with surveyor, insurance and my Sea Ray dealer to get the situation estimated. the decision came today. the insurance totalled our 340DA. The arch is irreperably destroyed and Sea Ray no longer makes it, having also collected and destroyed the molds for this boat in 2008.

Have to remove all personal effects from the vessel this weekend. Farewell and R.I.P. my 340 .....:smt089

Alex,

I'm so sorry to hear the news. I hope the settlement is satisfactory, and you are able to find another boat to enjoy as much as you did this one.

Incredible that just arch damage totals a boat...

It is quite common to see that a boat is totalled when a key part cannot be replaced. My slip neighbor's 390EC was totalled since the arch and the windshield were gone. Earlier in this thread there was someone whose baot got totalled because just the winshield was no longer available. using non-OEM parts may also be a huge liability issue when it comes to these big and structural items.
Again, thank you all. I will actually show my son all your comments tonite and "translate" what you are saying.

I too have sadly followed this thread from the beginning. Seeing the pictures of your boat made my heart sink. Nobody should have to go through that. I can't imagine what you and your family must have felt, and still do feel.

Like all things in life, keep your head up and looking to what the future can be and not dwelling on what it can't be.

I just keep thinking "Thank goodness for the insurance".

It really does give you the opportunity to just "walk away and start over". Otherwise you would be looking hard at that $25K parts boat. .. and you will find that you would be bidding against four slip mates needing the same parts.

Sorry for you loss.

The same thing is happening with an '05 50DB that was crushed in our roof collapse. The hardtop molds have been destroyed and the insurance company is searching for a used one. The owner is livid that the boat has not been totalled since it was immaculate and will never be the same. If it is fixed, it will go on the market the next day. Shame that the owner will end up taking the loss just to unload it in the end.

A friend of ours bought his boat back from the insurance company last year and is restoring it. I just don't get that, with so many boats on the market you'd be hard pressed to sell one labeled as "reconstructed" whether it be 1 year or 5 years down the road.

Last year, Marine Max had an arch listed on ebay from a 2000 340. It was on there for months. I'm guessing the insurance co. has already looked for one but it may be worth a call to see if its still available. IIRC, it was a MM out west.

Sorry to hear about your boat.
