The death of my 340DA - Roof collapse at SMYC

so sorry for the situation that your are in. I was thinking of some idea or way to help you and was wondering if it would be easier to find or build a alum, or stainless arch. I don't know if the looks would be acceptable or any easier to do. It is a thought i had and wanted to pass it on to you. I hope everything works out ok for you.

Wow, this is really bad for you Alex.
I can't imagine how you feel, after this happens with your pride and joy!

Of course a aluminum arch is NO option, and looks ridiculous.

I immediately start searching the web for you!

Best luck for you.

Peter

Arent some OEM SR arches painted aluminum?

Have been working with surveyor, insurance and my Sea Ray dealer to get the situation estimated. the decision came today. the insurance totalled our 340DA. The arch is irreperably destroyed and Sea Ray no longer makes it, having also collected and destroyed the molds for this boat in 2008.

Have to remove all personal effects from the vessel this weekend. Farewell and R.I.P. my 340 .....:smt089

Damn Alex, that's very sad. I really didn't think it would come to that, having followed this thread from the get-go. I guess you have to start contemplating your next move. It's a good time to be a boat buyer, but there's nothing like YOUR own boat! Condolences.

Holy crud!

That's horrible!

- or is it? Is this now an opportunity to upgrade? Was the insurance enough to cover a new boat in time for the season?

I second your sentiments Ron. I am trying to get my head around how I would feel if it was my boat. Just think of all the hours and dollars that went into the repairs, maintenance and cool mods to get it just the way you want it ... "priceless". Although it is a buyers market, I wouldn't relish the thought of starting that journey all over again.

My condolences Alex. Better days ahead my friend.:thumbsup:

Sorry to hear that, really surprising - I didn't think they would total it. Keep us posted on your search.

I was torn about this too, but the fact is that the arch is gone and there is no way to repair it ... its gone, I can promise you that when you look how it delaminated, exploded under the crushing load from the collapsing roof. Some sections of the arch seem actually to have been kind of pulverized, laying in form of fiberglass dust on the cockpit floor. Now there is no way to rebuild an arch unless you can take a mold of it, no builder can be found to take the liability, and the cost could be astronomic etc.,etc.,etc.

We found out in the process that this is what happens when your Sea Ray is more than five years out of production ... Sea Ray collects and destroys all the molds for a given model at or more than five years out of production. This particular arch was apparently manufactured by a supplier, not SR directly. The molds for this type of 340DA were collected by SR and destroyed in 2008

So sorry Alex, I've been following your thread since the first day. Did they offer you a buy back price ? may be worth it to install a aluminum radar arch or T -Top.

Look on E-bay there is a 2002 340 without engines and an engine hatch asking 24,500.00 with no bids. It would make a good parts boat if you could buy yours back. Sale ends in just over a day. Just a thought.

They are asking $24,500.00, so make a conditional offer of $15,000.00 (make an offer of $5,000.00 for your dead boat)

Nobody is going to be insulted with these offers ... just think of it as the start of negotiations. You will have to move fast on the E-Bay boat though.

I am trying to get my mind around this. . . . .a boat built in 2002 was totalled because the ARCH was destroyed. 2002.

wow.

Take the e-bay boat and the money from your boat to Tampa and have a couple of yanmars installed. A 2002 340 DA diesel. How sweet it is! Nothing like dreaming.

I've taken a look at the ebay boat - great idea Ken!

I'm sure that there would be lots of CSR members wanting to buy parts off this boat too (after you take the arch and whatever else you want). After that, you could list it on ebay again as a unit for parts or just scrap it.

The key is being able to buy your boat back and get this one at the right price since you'll also be looking at transportation, yard storage, labour, and possible scrap charges. It just might be a viable option.

It really sucks to think the arch is enough to total a boat. Seems like you could get a deal on your boat and then go for an aftermarket hardtop or arch - someone has to be able to make a custom one which could make your boat complete.

The ebay one looks like it could be a good deal - new engines and generator and you could be in great shape. Looks like a fun project.

Alex,

Seriously...if you are confident in the condition of the rest of the boat, consider buying it back from the insurance company and get it into a warehouse where you can work on it.

Find a boat that you can use as a "donor" boat and re-work your original boat as you wish.

Everyone's personal situation is different and understandably this scenario might not work for you....however if it does, this is certainly a viable option for you.

Last year I considered buying a 340DA that the arch had been replaced with one fabricated by Pipe Welders here in South Florida. It was custom built from aluminum tubing that was customized with different brackets, rod holders, spreader lights, etc. I have to say that it looked very sharp. If I can find the pics I took I'll post them.

Good Luck,

John F.
