School Shooting

I am personally beside myself with sadness. Whenever I read another thing about this I can't help but picture my 2 grandsons who live with us. It truly makes me sick.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected both directly and indirectly by this tragedy. What a crap time of year for this to happen.

Brother in law's kids were in that mess but are OK.
WTF is going on in this world.

I could list about 20 things that I think are wrong with our society but if I did this thread would be locked before morning.

Suffice it to say that he saved the state of CT a lot of money by doing himself at the end. Just too bad he didn't do himself first.

My heart goes out to all involved, including the cops who have to investigate the crime scene. What a horrible thing for anyone to have to do. Pray for them because they'll need it before they're done.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of this awful tragedy. What on earth is the world coming to when someone could do something so evil to all those poor children, and teachers let alone what he did to his own mother. I keep looking at my first grandchild who's three moinths old and wonder what on earth is the world going to be like for her later on. It is all so very, very sad. Coming from the UK we're not used to carrying guns, other than for hunting, but my husband and I are really begining to wonder.................just for our own safety, perhaps we should consider it. Although we find it rather an alien thing to do. Most police in the UK still don't carry guns routinely.

My heart felt prayers go out to those close to this tragedy. I've had it. I joined the NRA today (and I don't like lobbyists), and plan to enroll in a conceal and carry class as soon as one is available. This isn't the country I grew up in...where in the hell are we headed?

Truly one of the saddest things I believe I have ever heard. This low life took all of these lives as a coward then took his own life as a coward so he didn't have to face the consequences. If they find that anyone was assisting this cowardly act, I agree that a public stoning is appropriate.

The Washington Post reported this morning that the shooter had a form of Autism. If this was possibly Asperger Syndrome, it would explain how this could happen. This disorder causes lack of empathy, emotional distance and very limited social interaction. The individuals typically become obsessed with something and this obsession can change as they grow older. This person could have developed a dangerous obsession with school and other mass shootings.

Disclaimer: I am not a shrink and this is not a diagnosis.

First and foremost, prayers for those families who lost members in this terrible incident. Last night I gave everyone in my house extra hugs.

I have had a concealed permit since I was 18, that was 40 years ago. While this is not meant to be political, gun control does have failures. In all the cases this year, none of the control measures prevented the shootings. In my 40 years as an adult, 4 times I had to defend myself from muggers. I disarmed 3 knives and one gun away from the attacker(s), some single and some multiple attackers. In each case no police were involved. However, justice was dispensed. The reason for this statement was a court decision in CA, where the State Supreme Court stated "It is not the responsibility of the police to protect the individual, but to protect the community as a whole". I have taken that statement very seriously.

I am not the average person, over 30 years of marshal arts, and instructor for over 10 years. But that supreme court decision is I think key to solving this kind of problem. Does that mean we all have to start carrying guns? I do not know if that is the answer. It is easy to Monday morning quarterback the incident nor am I going to second guess what should be done. It seems from the reports I am hearing here in CT, that strong protocol was in place for workplace security.

One thing that I have observed over my life time. It seems as a society, we have changed. We have lost our history of helping people who need help to a society of self-centeredness. We are not islands and need to change this down hill momentum. It seems as we are heading the way of the great Romain empire.

If you decide to get a CCWP get trained. It is a responsibly to carry everyday. Just buying a gun and getting the basic CWP training is not going to prepare you for the fight if it comes your way. Train, practice what you learn. You want it to be like backing your boat into the slip second nature.

I have trained with this company www.tacticalresponse.com. James is an outstanding trainer his training is top notch.

It is sad that the country has become such a dangerous place

What are you guys suggesting...highly trained, armed teachers? I know a teacher that was at one of the school events. It's noise, screams, confusion, where they at, how many, direct the kids, and happening fast. It would take a special person with training to get good results. Don't take my question to be anti firearm...I have dozens. Capable armed civilians are not wandering the halls available to handle bad guys that attack in these schools...it'll have to be the teachers.

What a terrible tragedy. I feel so bad for the parents of the children lost and for the children who have to live on with the memory. Maybe asking for a couple teachers to volunteer for hand gun training and some basic tactical skills is not a bad idea. All of the security systems and gun control laws are not going to prevent some psycho from taking lives. There has to be a first line of defense. Maybe if more good folks carried guns, the tragedies could be minimized. It would be foolish to think that if everyone has a gun or nobody has a gun, that we can prevent this kind of thing from happening. But I believe that if more folks had a gun it would minimize the outcome. I have a CCP and now feel like I have a responsibility to use it.

Everyone, keep this in mind. From what I understand this township did not allow CWP's or open carry firearms. Firearms in schools, I'm not to sure about it. I've seen teachers that shouldn't even be near our children, let alone a gun. I do know teachers that have permits to carry (my wife) but to carry,in a school? I've owned and carried since I was 18. I both open carry and conceal. I belong to a range that has a simulator that helps to teach when to shoot and when not to. I take my training with my firearms as serious as I do learning
the rules of boating. Am I a gun fanatic, no. I own two, I carry one and it will more than
take you away from here. (Sig C-3 1911 45) I don't want to jump into guessing for a solution to fools like this one but I do want to say this. My father taught all of us about guns at an early age, we saw what a gun could do to another living soul, we hunted, and we did firearm safety. Gun safety was taught in school, officers came and taught the class, they showed the old grizzly movies. Guns aren't for everyone and that's fine, but don't try to push a non hand gun agenda down my throat, and call it a "what's best for all" law. If this pushes you to go and get your CWP, don't do it online! Go to a class, put your hands on a firearm and learn, but don't stop there, practice often and get comfortable with the noise and the gun. Hand guns are dangerous, but it's the people using them that make them that way!

After 9/11, the airlines started using Federal Air Marshals and created the FDO program (Voluntary armed pilots) and as a result we have not had a successful hi-jacking since. I think it might be time to institute a similar program for schools and universities.
Even after Va Tech shootings here, Va banned all guns on school campus. Md, you can't even carry in their state even if you have a permit!

I agree Scott.

You know when you talk to those who others call a hero, they said that they did what they had to do, nothing special but take action. I think the first video was real clear about that and this last one confirms. Taking action is needed!
