School Shooting

There is no such thing as an "assault rifle"...

The term "assault weapon" was invented by the anti-gun lobby as a way of blurring the distinction between military-style semiautomatics, and machine guns, to a largely ignorant public. Prior to their invention of this term this was not commonly used in gun circles nor in law.

Definition of assault weapon from CT site. Looks like they have things covered.

They even regulate laser pointers. My dog Gus had great fun chasing the dot but If I was in CT I'd be guilty of an infraction for letting my 10yo granddaughter run him around with it.
Sec. 53-206e. Limitation on sale and use of laser pointers. (a) As used in this section, "laser pointer" means a hand-held device that emits a laser light beam and is designed to be used by the operator to indicate, mark or identify a specific position, place, item or object.

(b) No person shall sell, offer to sell, lease, give or otherwise provide a laser pointer to a person under eighteen years of age, except as provided in subsection (d) of this section.

(c) No person under eighteen years of age shall possess a laser pointer on school grounds or in any public place, except as provided in subsection (d) of this section.

(d) A person may temporarily transfer a laser pointer to a person under eighteen years of age for an educational or other lawful purpose provided the person to whom the laser pointer is temporarily transferred is under the direct supervision of a parent, legal guardian, teacher, employer or other responsible adult.

(e) No person shall shine, point or focus a laser pointer, directly or indirectly, upon or at another person in a manner that can reasonably be expected to cause harassment, annoyance or fear of injury to such other person.

(f) Any person who violates any provision of this section shall have committed an infraction.

The first sentence of that CT law states:
"Any selective-fire firearm capable of fully automatic, semiautomatic or burst fire at the option of the user or any of the following specified semiautomatic firearms: "

It then goes on to list most every semi-automatic firearm made. What that section does is simply define what an "assault weapon" is. That section does not prohibit them or state where or when they can be owned or used, it simply defines the term.

I live in CT. I have held a CWP since I was 19, almost 40 years ago. Under CT law the AR-15 did not qualify as an assault weapon ban in CT. If you dig further into CT law, there are 5 items that must be present to consider. Select fire, bayonet lug, pistol grip, flash suppressor with threaded end of the barrel, and folding stock. Well the gun manufactures worked around that. You also have to remember some of the biggest gun manufactures are in this state. Ruger, Winchester, Marlin (no bankrupt),Colt, Remington, Mossberg, and others I cannot remember. The AR-15 was legal in this state. The problem is that it looks like a military weapon, but that is just cosmetic. It was nothing more than a semi-automatic that shoots .223 or you can get a .308 version (not as popular). A mini 14 is legal, it has a 5 round clip as stock (bigger clips available) is semi-automatic, but has normal wood stock instead of high tech material, and could cause the same amount of damage.

A Glock 22 .40 caliber comes standard with 2x15 round clips. When you really stop to thing about it, which would be more deadly in a building? This nut in Newtown could have done more damage with the Glock than the AR-15. when you look at the Terminal ballistics between the 2 rounds, .223 & .40 the .40 does more. He would have had to pull the trigger the same amount of times for either. He might have had to reload more frequently and carried more clips, but with lessor weight.

This kid was acting out a fantasy of playing video games on real people.

I've got a mint Gurand and and old BAR, both have had the firing pins removed incase of theft. The ban on these guns is going to be worthless and I base that statement on past government actions like, banning fully auto rifles. They banned these guns, but not the kits....Seems they are tring to kill a bear with a BB gun. I hate government actions just as much as the rest, but this time do it right. Let's make it tougher to get ownership, better background checks. Let's face it, if you or I want a gun, we have no issues with them looking into us. Let's go after the one thing that would make the thugs think, ammo. Make it harder to buy mass amounts and tougher on the cash-flow. This kid stole the guns after killing his mom, we don't know if the guns were tucked away in a drawer or locked up in a safe. Kids are smart these days, they can get the combo or the key by paying attention. I don't have the answer never have, but just this one time let's stop and think of what will work and don't do a knee-jerk reaction. WE as gun owners have control of our own guns....WE as gun owners need to control them! WE as gun owners are responsible, not the government! Educate your kids about your gun and teach them right from wrong....it's not ANYONE'S job but yours!

dwna is right. When I was a cop I had two young boys....and I always had a loaded gun(s) around the house. I made no secret that they were loaded and always taught the boys if they wanted to look at one, we'd unloaded it and they could handle it. As a result, my oldest son has zero interest in guns or shooting. My youngest son is/was a nationally ranked 3-gun match shooter and still is a shooter. Both were brought up around guns, there was no mystery surrounding them, and they learned early on how much damage a handgun could do to a gallon jug of water.

Training is the key.

They had to define it as the term had no meaning prior to the introduction and media promotion of laws.

Sounds like you handled things the way I was raised. From my earliest memory dad had a 12 guage loaded under his bed. As a farmer we may have had wild animals after the livestock, theives, or poachers to defend the farm from. I knew NEVER to touch it even though it was on the floor. ...and never did.
