Official 390 E.C. Thread

Now I have one more problem. Like I said, its done nothing but rain for 2 weeks. On the boat last night and woke up to a soggy bed! The hatch above the forward berth has been an ongoing problem as far as leaking. Thought I had it fixed but still no luck. Thinking the best thing to do is take it out completely and replace it. Been looking but no luck in finding one so far that would match the other two on the deck. Can't have them not matching!

Anyone know where we can get a replacement for that forward hatch ?

Thanks again for all the help!

I have just replace mine with another Taylor Made one. It fits exactly and it's super expensive... but it's made in tempered glass.

The model is: Taylor Made Ultra III 20" x 20" Hatch

For the head and the guest room you should use these: Taylor Made Ultra III 13" x 18" Hatch

I bought them all at Boatersland :http://www.boatersland.com/tay50111.html

Pietro,

Thanks for the info, you are right, a bit pricey but cost is no problem when the wife says she does not like having the water drip on her! Going to order them this week, any tips, tricks, thoughts on the install of them? It appears to be pretty straight forward as far as removal and replacement but with all the work you have done on yours thought i would check to see if there is anything I need to be aware of.

Again, thanks for the help!

Pricey but very nice indeed. I like the fact the screen is made out of tempered glass.
Once you have removed the hatch and the rim, have a look inside the deck coring. On my 390 some of the coring was missing just around the hatch. I filled the voids with foam and it never leaked again!

Pietro,

Again thanks! And I hate to ask but your idea about filling the voids made sense. My first reaction was I would be a can of that expanding foam I use around the house for it. Then the more I thought about it, I kept questioning myself so I have to ask, is that the foam you mentioned or is there a marine type foam I should be using?

Still so much to learn!

It's just sealant foam, I do not believe there's actually a marine grade one.

Check this one on BOE:

Two new questions!

Now that the season is underway and the wife is getting good at handling lines, she does not like the height of the bow rail and wants it to be 6- 12 inches higher! Anyone have any experience, suggestions, recommendations on replacing the bow rail or is that something that I have to find a metal fabricator to do? Any experiences in the cost of doing it?

The second concern of hers is now that we are upgrading the cabin and new electronics, etc, she wants to be able to lock the slider into the cabin. I have no key for it. Anyone have experience in getting a replacement key?

Again, thanks to everyone, this site has been very helpful in how to spend my money? :)

I would not venture into such a thing as modifying the bow rails!
If you want a good result you should replace it all. This means you will have to unscrew all the stanchions’ bolts and for doing it you must remove internal lining and furniture to have access to the nuts from underneath the deck... moreover you would destroy the look of your 390... Is it worth it??? :smt017

Can’t help you with the key...

Having a new bow rail fabricated is gonna be expensive, and labor intensive .There is a lot of interior to remove to access the nuts for the stancions.I priced out a set of stainless handrails ,the short ones that run down the middle of the bow this spring they were 1000 dollars from several fabricators, there is a guy in port huron that will make them for you though and he was a little cheaper but not much.Have you thought about haveing a extension made kinda like some sailboat bows are in the front? That way you dont have to pull the existing rails, and mabey you can find a local to weld them on at your dock or over the winter.Make sure he covers everything up well you dont want to fix weld burns.

Pietro,

I found a new Taylor Made Ultra II 20" x 20" hatch. Is there a difference between the ultra II and the Ultra III???

 the Ultra II seems to be out of production and I cannot find any spec!

Since it's a Taylor 20" x 20" it should fit perfectly.

You probly have a skeleton key lock. I was able to pick up a blank at Lowes and used a dremel to make a copy. You mite be able to take lock apart and do the same. A locksmith wanted $65 to make one as he would have had to make the blank

Good question about it being worth it. It was more a request from the wife than anything else. I agree it might impact the look of the boat but like someone suggested if I can get something fabricated to just extend the height a bit it might work and keep her feeling safe and happy! I think it will become more an issue of cost than anything else and I can speculate that fabrication is expensive!

thanks for the response. did not think it would be as easy as calling searay for a new key! May have to go the locksmith route. for the $65 it might be worth it vs having a tv stolen or some of the other electronics I keep inside ( redoing the gauges to install the plotter in a fixed location is a winter project since I want to redo the look and feel and replace radar )

Hello fellow Classic Searay owners. I started a thread about a week ago concerning the rotation of my props on my 1986 Searay 390 Sportfish. As Pietro pointed out when he welcomed me to the site, our boats are virtually identical from the rubrail down.

I was wondering if our boats also share the same prop rotation. My boat has the port engine CW rotation and starboard engine CCW rotation as viewed from the stern.

The only reason I ask, is this rotation is opposite of every other twin engine inboard I have every seen. In fact, I suspected that perhaps the boat was set up bassakwards when it was repowered in the mid '90's.

I prefer not to hijack this thread anymore than I already have so please reply with any input to the post titled "My props spin the wrong way!?!".

Thanks
Nick K

Well, another problem with our beloved 390!

Whenever it rains or one washes the boat, water runs along the gunwales down into the cockpit as indicated in the photo.

Apparently it's easy to solve with a baffle, but I never came up with a decent idea. :smt017

What do you think, fellows???
