Official 390 E.C. Thread

I concur on the cleats sucking. I call them embarrassing. I'd like to replace them, but I'd end up having fill holes and play with gelcoat matching and blending.

I agree with you, and I did not have the nerve to change them too!

Hi All!

I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me if this is posted to the wrong thread. I did try the search but couldn't find the info anywhere else, so here goes...

We've bought a 1987 Sea Ray 390 Express Cruiser, in southern Europe. The HIN number is otherwise clear and clean, but it's difficult to tell the difference between a C and a zero. The HIN is either
SERF8157C787, or SERF81570787. The registry papers indicate the latter, and I myself wrote down zero in my notebook when I first saw it. However, according to some websites the zero should be a C indicating the month of manufacture. I tried to contact Sea Ray but they haven't answered. Does anyone here know which is the correct format? Thanks. The latter part of the HIN seems to be PC-390-E0-676.

Welcome to CSR and to this crazy bunch of owners of one of the best Sea Ray ever! :smt001
Your HIN should read like that SERP 8157087 (87 is the year) - PC-390-EC 676
Mine is SERP 13000090 PC – 390 – EC 617 so I think the C is a 0
Let us know how it goes with the Yanmars!

Thank you for feedback and welcomes! We're dying to get the boat transported and launched.

For the HIN number format, I looked at this website:
http://www.pcmarinesurveys.com/whats a hin marine survey surveyor mississauga.htm
According to them the 4th last digit should be a letter, indicating manufacture month.

BTW excellent work you have done with the Moonchild IX! We are going to restore our boat as well, structurally it seems very fine, but has been sitting unventilated at a marina for who knows how long, hence there is interior work to be done.

Has onyone installed a transom shower. If so where did you put it? I am wrestling with inside the cockpit or actually cutting a hole in the fiberglass in the transom. I am a little leary of cutting new holes in boats. Water lines are irrellevant. Easy to do either way. I already have the shower. Its the one with hot and cold valves and the shower head with handle with a door that closes. so its going to be a pretty big hole Prolly 5 X 10 maybe not sure dont have it in my hand right now.

I ran H&C PEX plastic water lines back along the port side a few years ago with the intention of doing the same as you. I was going to install the transom shower somewhere on the transom closer to the port side, but have not gotten around to it yet. Exactly what product are you using and where did you buy it? Do you have a pic of it?

Has anyone out there made the switch from 3 to 4 blade props on boats such as mine with 7.4 l. gassers? If so, what can I expect out of my 390 from this changeover? I've found some info on diesels, but sketchy info on gassers. We don't drive hard, so top end performance isn't a big priority. Obviously there will be more bite out of the hole, but besides overall performance, what can I expect when docking? We always back into our slip and have no problems with our 3 blades in this regard, but I am assuming it will be much more responsive. On windy days, this extra bite could be a great benefit. Will the benefits be well worth the cost to change over? If so,what size props would you recommend? We are currently running 1.88:1 B/W trannys with 19" x 18" props.

I have the 4-blades. It is better around the dock, but these things are still pigs anyway. I'll have to go look at what size they are and get back to you. I'm going down there today, so I'll let you know.

Thanx for your help on this and you are correct ... they sure do like their gasoline. We are never in a big hurry, so it's not too bad when you hold back on the throttles. Because of their shallow draft, the wind can move that front end around quickly when backing in, so I was hoping that the extra bite would help get her back in there quicker without having to increase the revs too much. I don't like coming in hot unless absolutely necessary.

My transom shower, technically, is a cockpit shower. It's right inside the cockpit door,(to the left when stepping in from the platform). It's mounted in the storage space, and has a long hose so you can stand on the platform and use it.

I had thought of putting it there. I am getting rid of the transom door and installing a smaller door that swings inward from starboard to port. Thought of putting the shower on the starboard side right inside the door.

Made my maiden voyage today with my new Pietro tab. I can hold a flat level plane all the way down to about 2600 RPM's!!!!!! Before the tab, I could only hold plane down to about 3200, and it wasn't all that good. I was riding nice and level at WOT with very little additional Bennett tab at 27mph upstream with 3/4 water and 100% full fuel, which is phenomenal with this boat. I couldn't be more pleased. Everyone with a 390 needs one of these!
