205 Sport thread?

I would be afraid to use a trolling motor in my area....TOO MANY STUMPS! Would be nice though. Post how it works out.

For those who have added 6 1/2's in the bow area on the 205, how did you cut the holes? Did you use a jigsaw,etc... thats my next upgrade so any pics or tricks you got would help. Ive been searching but cannot find the tread on it.

Thanks guys!

Yes, Jigsaw. LOTS of masking tape all around the area and lots of measuring and re-measuring. Wasn't bad at all really. Wear a mask and goggles.

This thread is still around... holy crap!

Has anyone's dashboard alarm ever sounded other than when you first turn the key to the right? Mine did and would'nt turn off. Oil pressure guage is reading really low (below 20 psi) I checked the dipstick and it looks fine. Oil color was good too. I have a 2004 205 sport, 175 hours. I had to disconnect the alarm. Any ideas? She has never let me down.

Those gauges suck, but someone hopefully will chime in if the alarm is actually set off by the gauge or by something in the engine. Could be oil pump not working correctly?

Oil is pretty important :) I would really consider getting a solid answer on this before running it.

OK. Here are the test results for the Powertech ELE 4 blade 15x17 SS prop that I got from PropMD.com:

Conditions: 1/2 tank, 2 people, and gear

WOT: 4900 RPMs, 52 MPH on Speedometer at 50% trim

Hole shot: 3.6 secs to plane

Boat drives higher out of the water, straighter at low speeds, and even has better directional control in reverse.

This prop is a keeper.

I also bought this prop. Took my boat out last weekend for the first time. Great prop! Only drawback is that I noticed that we went through gas a lot faster now.

Reading through my Mercruiser manual i found that the alarm only sounds if there is a water temp opverheat, very low oil pressure, or low stern drive oil. Sure enough my gearlube was runing pretty low. hopefully i didnt do any damage! Thanks!!

Interesting. I haven't noticed much of fuel difference from the stock prop. Are you getting similar performance numbers?

Am considering purchase of a 2006 205 Sport with about 16 hours for use as a lake boat. However, I read that the 205 "wanders" (fails to track straight) and requires considerable steering adjustments at low speed. I had this problem with a 260 Sundancer and it was a real pain when you just want to cruise slowly. Is this a problem with 205's?? By the way, the boat will have the Mercruiser 5.0 TKS ( carbuerated) engine. Any problems with this engine in the 2006 year? Many thanks.

ALL i/o runabouts have this problem, as far as the ones I have driven or been in over my life. Someone else can explain the fluid dynamics and why it occurs, but there isnt anything that I know of to keep this from happening.

This is not a reason to skip over a boat.

If you want to eliminate the wandering, inboards/vdrives are your answer, and so look for a mastercraft or malibu etc...

Bill:

Thanks for feedback. Hope to hear from others as well. By the way, noticed that you installed your (aftermarket?) wakeboard tower support arms directly to the top side of the hull without the extra front-to-back support of the factory design. Have you had any fibreglass cracking problems at the connection? Who was the supplier?

The front to back is really just for looks, they are not needed for stability or to help eliminate cracking. The tower is perfectly solid, and when installed correctly, there is no chance of fiberglass or hull cracking at all.
The supplier is Monster Tower, one of the best names in aftermarket towers, and one of the most popular on the wakeboarding sites/community. Monstertower.com

Go to wakeboarder.com if you wish to research towers. There are other suppliers as well that are great, and some that are terrible. Between the great ones it comes down to the look you want. Post up there, youll get some good advice of which manufacturers to use, which to avoid.

I liked the simplistic design of the monster, and it is known to be the easiest to install and fold and put accessories on. As well, the company is unreal. They replace anything at any time: really back the product up. A recent client on wakeboarder.com had a wakeboard rack break after 2 years. Monster over nighted a new rack at no charge.

Good luck! I have install pics if you go with Monster.

Again...thanks very much. Great reference if we decide on the 205 and install a tower. We're still undecided on the 205 with the 5.0 TKS engine. Guess there are pros and cons to the TKS versus MPI. On the steering/wandering problem, hull design, I'm sure, is a compromise between manueverability and tracking. Just wish I could count on better tracking at low speeds. Would anyone care to share real-life benefits/problems regarding their 205 Sport? What do you like best, what do you not like...what would you change given a choice?

I would go with MPI, just all around seems easier and has a bit more horsepower (cant ever have too much!) and supposedly better cold weather starting.
I have to say I like everything about the 205 except the fact it is an i/o :smt001
It has a great wake for boarding, nice layout inside etc, but the i/o gets in the way for changing out riders. As well, the amount of weight you can put in these boats kinda blows. They just cant handle more than the 1200 they allow.
Our next boat will be a malibu or nautique as for the same size, they seat 4 more people, have an inboard, and a lot more features. They are also a bit more $, however.

Tracking is really not an issue for the 205 Sport. In fact, with a 4 blade prop, the boat doesn't wander at all. (I've driven a '96 220 Signature that wandered all over the place, so I am familiar with the problem.) The only complaints I've had with the 205 Sport is that the wake is a bit big for slalom skiing (but great for boarding) and the seat upholstery is not as durable as the signature series upholstery. Other than that, it's a great boat!

My 200 Sport definitely tracks (at least I think it does judging by what you guys are saying that is). If i hold the wheel straight at idle speed, the boat turns, so i'm constantly either moving the wheel to get it to go true straight, or I try to find the sweet spot angle that actually makes me go straight... 3 blade prop (i think! can't remember, ha)
