205 Sport thread?

Hope this helps - all photos from port side:

Note: The Service Manual notes that all motor mounts for 5.0 and 5.7/6.2 are the same. Only difference might be where the mount ends up on the structure. I believe the trapezoidal piece my mounts are installed on is solid, and designed to take the motor mounts no matter where they end up.

Oh, and the 23 1/2" dimension is from mount to transom fiberglass (on the inside). I hope these were helpful.

Very helpful, thank you.

As I suspected the mounting blocks in the hull are setup for varying engine sizes.

Will take some measurements this weekend and begin the preliminary to get the 350 in.

Thanks again!

Please let me know how the boat responds. I'm highly interested in doing either this, or an updated 5.3L/327 once my 5.0L finally says it's had enough, or my bankroll grows inversely to my ability to not upgrade!

I've always felt a 350 or similar in this boat would make it an absolute beast, looking forward to seeing the results.

Will do, this is my winter project which I'll get started on once I haul the boat out for the season.

Before then, I will take some baseline numbers so I have a point of comparison to measure any improvements.

Time to plane
0-30 mph
0-40 mph
Top Speed

I will keep a photo log of the process as well.

Cheers,

I always wondered about this. The 5.7 is lighter than the 5.0 and I would love to make my 205 a rocket ship.

Might add some tabs though, if you go through with this. At 53 my 205 got squishy and had a minor oscillation side to side. When you get closer to 60 it might get squirrelly without tabs.

Blaster,

What prop are you running to get 53 out of a 4.3mpi?

When I first had my boat out, it was equipped with a 17" vengeance prop. It would hit the limiter about 3/4 throttle. After working with my dealer, they gave me a 21" vengeance. That's the prop that would hit 53 mph on the gps at sea level. It was running 4800 rpm. The boat was limited to me 1/4 tank and no gear.

With more than 3 people it was a bit of a dog. I asked for a 19" vengeance and my dealer had their head service guy run my boat. After testing the various props I had run, he agreed the 19" was the way to go for how i like to run my boat. With the 19" vengeance, I can hit the rev limiter with 3 or fewer people. At the limiter it runs 50.5 at 4950 rpm's. It planes off with a full load, and runs plenty fast with the 19"

I am very happy with my boat, and thankful for all the support from my dealer to get it right for me.

Anyone have the black OEM tower that mounts just aft of the windshield and has the forward curved cross member? I was thinking about adding one to my 2013 205.

If you do, a couple of questions.

1) How well does it fold? Any pics of it folded?
2) What does the Bimini look like deployed with it?

I think this tower looks cool, but am concerned about how well it functions.

@ jerry d
late chiming in on your engine swap questions but I did a 4.3 to 5.0 swap on my 2004 200 sport last winter. You are correct that your boat is set up for the v8 mounts. Side mounts are just approx 4" farther forward on the V8 than the v6.

When I did mine I dropped in the new engine, aligned the engine and drive, then used a 18" long 3/8 spade but to drill new holes in the stringers through the motor mount holes at a little bit of an angle. Used the same lags with some 5200 in the holes and filled old holes with resin. Really was quite easy.

I kept the 1.82 V6 drive instead of swapping to the 1.62 that normally came with 5.0's, but had to step up from a 19" prop to a 21". If you're going up to a 350 mag you may run out of available prop pitches or are you going to swap the ratio in the drive?

Thanks for the info Scott. The way you handled it is my plan as well. Looks like things should drop in nicely. Re the drive, I am planning on running the 1.62 alpha. I've done some searching through Searay propping archives and it looks like they used the 1.62 alpha behind 350 mags on 210slx's and 220 sundecks in the past. Merc has a massive selection of avail props, I'm pretty confident I can find one that i will keep the engine in the sweet spot.

I'll stick with my 19p high five for water skiing (it should really pull hard with the new motor) and go to whatever pitch is necessary to get the boat into it's top speed range when cruising.

Hope to really dig into the project come march with pics to follow.

Thx.

Jerry,

If you have the 1.62 drive already you'll be fine, didn't realize the mpi came with a 1.62. Probably just need to go up one in pitch.

I'm running a 21" Vensura 4 blade which works well for holeshot when loaded down. It pulls me up skiing with 7 people in the boat. Generally I've liked the 4 blades but I also tried a 23" spitfire but it didn't increase speed or drop WOT rpm vs the vensura.

I bought a 22" enertia off eBay to try this spring, will be interested to see if this gives me more top end with out killing loaded down Holeshot.
