Ripping up carpet and install Alure flooring in 80s era sundancer 300

I do not know how our country can allow substandard products to be imported from China, who does not give a **** about whats in their products! Remember last year when they pulled a bunch of childrens toys that were painted with lead based paints, and there was a similar problem with christmas ornaments. Thos damned dollar stores are the worst places, they are loaded with product from china.

It's all about the money. The EPA and our lovely government puts restrictions on US manufacturers to the point where we can't be competitive, however other countries are not held to any standards. It amazes me that we can make anything in this country anymore....

Both our countries impose the same restriction when it comes to materials but in the case of Mattel, the test samples contained no lead or lead based paint but once the company in China got the approval to export the product the product was changed to cheaper lead based materials. If a company here did that they would spend the next 1000 years in court but Mattel was being defrauded by their supplier. When you have no laws on what you produce or how you make it, it's hard to find them guilty of anything. They are driven solely by profit.
It's not the fumes that you smell that can does the worse damage, when you get a whiff of those you leave but the ones you don't smell are the ones that can kill or destroy your nervous system or other organs, I know first hand. Why is it some batches of Allure smell and some don't according to that blog they fixed the problem in 2009 or did they find a way to neutralize the smell but the danger is still there?

I agree with the post on spend a few dollars more a sq foot and get a better product. I am thinking on putting down an Ash floor in the boat same as we did in the living room and dinning room.

btw...the Alure flooring I used in a rental bathroom had/has no unusual odor....no bathroom joke pleas.....and is holding up well to daily use by tenants.

...but the tenants are dead.

As long as the post dated checks clear, I don't see a problem :wow:, the landlord is not permitted in unless there is a complaint.

What's that expression, "Not in my back yard"

I am only kidding, for those that aren't sure.

:huh:Chris, do you think that the plywood backed engineered flooring would hold up in the marine enviroment, IE: damp, temperature changes and the freezing temps. in winter storage? I'm leary of the non marine plywood backing, swelling with humidity, moisture changes. Also, if you dont glue it down, the potential for mold growth is still there. Boy... what a can of worms this whole flooring treatment has turned out to be, huh. Im ready to just gelcoat the darn thing !! No smell, no mold, no nuthin ! LOL
What about an engineered wood laminate? I saw some very nice stuff at Lowes the other day, was on a plywood type backing about the thinkness of Pergo but not pressed cardboard.

I don't know, I have heard of others that have used the engineered wood products and haven't reported problems. I am be concerned about the possibility of mold growth though. Some of this stuff is supposed to be good for basements so it could work on boats also. Aside from humidity, it really doesn't get all that wet in the cabin. Did you see that stuff Marine Max is selling on ebay? It is for boats but its expensive. I may try an engineered wood and see what happens. Good luck with your search. Keep us posted.

Check out my earlier pics, it's a product from home depot

Without going back and reading all the posts in this thread...... I was just on Home Depot's web page and noticed that Allure has come out with a NEW Allure Ultra. The planks 'click' together....they don't 'stick' together like the original stuff. It's also thicker and more expensive...$3.25 sq ft. Guaranteed for life in non commercial applications. Was this thread about the New Ultra or the original stuff?

They use alot of that product in bathroom applications. Wet/hot an humid an it does fine. I'll keep u guys n the loop on how my "click lock" flooring does thru the summer

Looks good Jim. What product did you use? It needs to be fairly water/ moisture resistant. Thats why I bought the Alure. (Unfortunately I am still waiting for warmer temperatures to be able to do the install.) The other advantage of the Alure is that is is flexible. Again, your floor looks nice.

Was at the depot this weekend an saw the allure. I know what this stuff is, I used it in my toy hauler last summer when we redid the bathroom. Great stuff, wounldnt have worked in the boat due to the unlevel floor. But nice stuff. I'm very happy with it.

I have decided to go ahead and use the Allure product. I special ordererd the (Sapalli red) , It looks awesome, has a very tight grain pattern. I layed out a box of it in my kitchen overnight, no smell ! After speaking with someone at the mother company, which happens to be PERGO, they said the offgassing is typical of any PVC, vinyl, composite flooring. They assured me that there was nothing harmfull about the product, and are sending me a MSDS for it. He also said the reason it can smell initially is because the product is manufactured, then packaged, trapping solvents. After the boxes have been opened up and allowed to breathe, the smell will dissipate. He said it should work in the boat, but the temp. needs to be around 75 degrees for the adhesive strips to work correctly and the need to roll the seams really good .He also said the waranty will not be honored if I install it in the boat. I will just lift up the rear most part of the floor occasionally to inspect for mold issues, but I dont expect any because I dont get any water on the floor, and the boat has always been very dry inside. I am going to roll on a coat of gelcoat on the bare floor just to seal it, also I will see any mold if it is present. I am planning on getting it installed this week. I will post pics as I proceede.

Dave, are you going to run the planks down the long axis of the cabin or are you going to run them across the width of the floor?

You know Chris, funny you should mention this. I have been playing with different layouts. If you lay them from port to starboard, it will give you the illusion of a wider boat, but it doesnt look right. Im not sure I like it. I tried it on the horizontal, looks pretty cool, (different), but the angled floor kind of clashes with the angle of the v-berth bulkhead, the dinette floor and the steps. Not sure. I layed some down from bow to stern...seems to look right. It follows the cabinets, works with the dinette area and flows with the table. I'm pretty sure that is the direction I will lay it.

Well finally got a little workable weather here in New England! I got the new larger steps installed, the removable aft cabin floor filler with inspection port installed, and got everything sealed up and ready for the floating floor. Hopefully next week, I want to get the water tank back in before the floor goes in.
