Well, I have been putting off doing this project for a year, and today, jumped in with both feet. I tore out all or the mauve floor carpeting in my 300 sundancer. No real surprises. Some of the rug pulled right up, but most of it, I had to use a stiff sharp putty knife under it as I pulled it up. The other thing is, there are a ton of screws holding down the stairs and frames! How they do the stairs is, they make the plywood stair tread, wrap the carpet over the top and around all the edges, then staple underneath. They then set the stair tread on the wood frame, and drive 2" long screws down throgh the carpet. You cant even find them! I had to cut the carpet away from the edges to find the screws. (The top step had 13 screws in it. I have to say, These old tubs are built like a brick %@#$ house ! The carpet unfortunately goes up under all of the cabinets and dinete seat boxes. I am going to leave the mauve carpet inside cabinets. All of the remaining carpet that goes up the sides of the steps, sides of aft cabin, and front of v-berth will recarpeted in a nuetral colored carpet to match the walls. I am going to be using the Alure synthetic flooring product to do the floor, steps and under the dinete. The edges of the steps and dinete step up will be done in a real teak custom made bull nose. This product is impervious to moisture, is not slippery when wet, cuts easy and is a floating floor that does not require a glue down application. It runs about $2.00 per square ft. The planks are 3/16" thick, 6" wide and 36" long. They have a lap joint and come with the adhesive already applied. I am taking photos of the project and will post them as I move through the job.

Where did you source your teak bullnose? Is somebody making it for you or are you doing it yourself?
I want to do this same project on my boat, it was the stairs and the stepdown in the aft cabin I wasn't sure how I was going to handle, you have the answer.

Chris, Yes I am going to make the bullnose myself. What I can do for you is send you a dimesional drawing of the bullnose. What I am going to do for the aft cabin floor is, build a false floor that just drops into that recessed area. It wont be fastened in any way, just going to float and be removable, due to the fact that this is a floating floor application.

Good luck! I will be right behind you doing the same thing. I am very eager to see some pics! Thanks for documenting this project.

I'm eager to see those pics too. I need some interior ideas and the Allure flooring sounds like the deal!

I did the same last year but i left the carpet down for more cushion. Spent 50$ at home depot for the allure. Very simple to do and if i get sick of the look i can cheaply change it. Took me about 2 hrs to do the job and no problem with the floor sticking to carpet

No hatches in the floor.

I bought two boxes of Allure and will put it in my 290 soon. I have been wondering what I am going to do with the steps. Can't wait to see your pics!

Any pics?

Posting resized photos tomorrow. I'm all banged up from working in the boat all day. I'm getting too old for this !

No sympathy! - Just the facts and the pictures please!

Yeah, after redoing my boat, my back is trashed, my legs are sore, my hands are messed up, my arms are scratched up and itchy, I have cuts and scratches all over my body from raking against bolts and sharp edges, and my knees are gone.

You don't see me complaining :smt043

Well its pouring here today, and its too damp and cold to out to the boat. I have posted some more photos of the tear out in my photo album. The cut outs in the forward bulkhead are for the factory installed Ice maker and central vac.

Here a re couple of pictures of my stairs.
Took out the old ones.
Yes there were probably 25 screws and 1000 staples.
How they assembled these is beyond me.

Wood is 2" Jatoba Cherry
Similar to Brazilian Cherry
So hard all screws have to be pre-drilled and I went through a couple of bits and whole saws just assembling.
Well worth the effort, though.

Dancer - I might PM you for some more details. I'm looking to do this on my 300 Weekender. Which wood finish did you decide to go with?

Also, saw another thread where someone installed Allure in their 300. They used a pry-bar to lift up the counter, allowing them to slide the first plank underneath to ensure no movement of the floating floor. I was thinking about doing likewise. Any plans to do this, or do you feel this to be unnecessary?
