Luxury Cars Burning At Sea…

leaks in engine compartments?; I would say from a percentile aspect just as many....

I don’t know about percentages but I recall the number of gas car/truck fires per year was in the tens of thousands. Much higher than I expected. The number of EV fires has been far less. But much fewer numbers so the percentages are maybe higher

Again, be clear on the battery chemistry and evolution you are discussing. To site the airliner accidents is showing ignorance portrayed as fact as an analogy isn't your style; the technology not only is different in the types and chemistry and hazards of the batteries, but the safety measures and protections have dramatically changed and has rippled down in today's applications.
Today's automobile lithium battery technology is just as safe and reliable as gasoline powered automobiles. How many gasoline fires are there due to leaks in engine compartments?; I would say from a percentile aspect just as many....
I'll defer to you on modern lithium battery chemistry. Not in my wheel house and I'm not interested enough to do the research. I will say, in my defense, the FAA cites 351 "incidents" due to lithium ion batteries since 2006. The IATA cites 3 known crashes linked in some way to lithium ion batteries. My neighbor's hoverboard spontaneously ignited last year. Fortunately it was on the driveway and didn't burn their house down. It burned hot and fast and 3 fire extinguishers (don't recall the types used) didn't make a dent. I understand and accept that my examples are anecdotal at best. I will leave the science to you. All good.

Those hoverboards are cheap Chinese shit with no oversight. Stay away from those things.

Mostly yes but we keep sending money to them.

But my point is don’t look at that thing and group it in with EV vehicles that do have oversight.

You should get your facts straight on the chemistry and the battery applications/hazards. Come on you are better than some half-baked hyperbolic journalist. To allude that 0.001% of battery installations that have thermal issues is a problem is incredibly mis-leading.
I would correct my post to say that “once lithium batteries ignite, they burn violently”

I have my facts straight. You might have a PHD in OCD but my profession has been dealing with lithium battery fires on a routine basis. As you said, oversight is needed. Quality built products don’t seem to be the issue. Seems to be the aftermarket battery or charger are involved in a majority of these fires.

Electric scooters for rent are all around. These companies pay ordinary civilians to bring these scooters into their homes and recharge them. If someone else pays your electric bill, and you needed extra cash, maybe you would do it too.

Finding 10-15 scooters on charge in an apartment would not be out of the ordinary.

That’s actually a platinum mine which is used in catalytic converters

I was under the assumption we were discussing automobiles as is the topic of the thread. It seems we went off on a dirt road rather than the potential cause of the sinking of the ship. Maybe I missed something....

Sux about the luxury cars. I think it went to lithium batts, cause fires, what burns more, billions of autos over a 100 year span or the more recent lithiums , which is the more 'worseresttest' for the planet...down the rabbit hole we went.

Possibly they scuttled the boat to net the best financial and lowest legal risk outcome.
perhaps the cargo insurance worth more than the delivered price.

Much easier to sink it than to get it to shore. Also reduces risk for VW, if it turns out they have a bad battery design.
