LI Rendezvous - 2011

What date do you guys prefer for our LI Rendezvous?

I will vote for MYC, we go at least a couple times a year and really enjoy it. Our kids are grown so it's not a concern of ours but i cant help but wonder how anyone can think that Greenport has limited activities for children. Between the stores, toy, bike, skateboard, candy, ice cream, the park, skateboard park, run through water spouts, viewing platforms, carousel, movie theater, there are even artists that provide painting lessons and of course the beach and the water and this is all in front of your boat. Compare this to a fairly isolated (without a shuttle or taxi) high end marina hotel with 1 bar, food, pool and a beach - don't forget the day spa, this is a not a choice made for the children which is fine by me but those that have never been and have children should check out the websites and decide on your own before voting. Although all may be for not if the vote keeps going to MYC.

Russ,

I agree with you to some degree. We liked Greenport and Townsend Marina, but MYC left an impression of a top class. If the majority would vote for Greenport I would go there as well. However, when we toured the village we didn't find too many exciting things to do. So, in the way I'm happy to that MYC got more votes.

Alex......I will leave on late Wednesday night after work and driving to cape, get there Thursday am so I will stay 3 nights.....THU, FRI, SAT and depart Sunday......

Thanks John, I added your info.

I added [Length Of Stay] field so we can keep better track of things. Guys, please respond how long you're planning to stay at MYC.

The only time I have been to Block Island was with a friend after he got his pilot's license. We flew in, had lunch and flew home. I didn't get the impression that there was much to do there.

I don't know if the date is correct on that pic or not but judging from the empty marinas, mooring field, anchorage etc it probably is - the place is a ghost town off season - as for nothing to do - thats the draw - a great beach - great night life - plenty of hiking and exploring if you like that kind of thing - oh and did I mention the mudslides?

Russ,
As I stated earlier, I have never been to any of these spots so I'm just going with the flow. Fortunately I have plenty of Nintendo DS games and TV channels for the kids. If this place is not so great I probably won't return until the kids are older. But, Alex has a young son and is happy with the amenities so I will hope for the best. Maybe next time we do Greenport?

Alex,
I'm not sure on the length of stay yet. I'm trying to convince my wife that a run to BI after MYC would be cool if others are going. They call BI "The Bermuda of the North" , at least on their tourism page, and since we went to Bermuda last year at the same time for our anniversary I thought this may be a draw for her.

Todd, heading to BI after MYC sounds cool.

Greg, any thoughts?

Alex, I was referring to Mitchell Marina in Greenport, Townsend is a bit out of the way. Regardless i have absolutely no personal agenda here. I have been visiting all of the locations mentioned, with the exception of the South Shore for the past 27 years- i fished out of Montauk as a mate 30 yrs ago. I love them all and hope to continue visiting for many more - i am happy with wherever the majority chooses. I actually am more looking forward to meeting new and old friends and really don't care where we are going! I am very glad that this has appeared to have grown so much more since our previous effort last year- very exciting.

Regarding that pic of BI it is definitely winter, the Boat Basin has all of the floating docks out.

Todd, no worries -as stated above I am more interested in meeting everyone.

Todd, Alex, if you guys are thinking Block to follow MYC I will see you there! Maybe others will be able to join? You guys will not be disappointed with Block, it is hands down my families favorite- we will also be there for a couple weeks in July

Alex, before i forget, we take two 30 amp or one 50. We will be arriving Friday and departing Monday. Beam 12'8" draft 3'

To be honest, I saw that date and thought it might be wrong. It was a long time ago and I don't remember it being cold. I do remember scud running (changing course to avoid thunder storms) on the way home, which would leave me to believe that it was late summer or early fall. Either way, it was about 15 years ago and a lot can change. If you have never been there before, go visit and check off a box on your bucket list.

Oh man, as cool as that sounds, I don't know if I can swing it. I'll be just finishing up two weeks in the Chesapeake. Back to work for a few days, and then off for another week. As much as I would love to do that, I just don't think I can make it work.

I've been to block twice so far and I would go back in a heartbeat if I could. Let me see if I can come up with something...

In the mean time you can put me down for two nights at MYC (or wherever). I plan on leaving home Friday morning and getting back Sunday night.

I really need to retire.

Hey Russ, does it mean you're going to Block from MYC as well? That would be great

What you suggest mooring, anchoring or marina? How many days do you think we need to stay there?

Greg, sorry to heat that you can't make to the Block. We'll miss you there.

Our plan so far to leave on Friday spend the night at Shelter Island (West Neck Harbor) and then go to MYC on Sat. Stay at MYC Sat/Sun/Mon and head to the Block on Mon.

Paul, what's your vote for the location from the choices on the first page?

I placed the following results there:

Current votes
Brian - MYC
John - MYC
Jeff - MYC
Todd - MYC
Dave - MYC
Alex - MYC

Alex, I've never been to MYC, and with that being the unanimous vote, you can add me.

Is 2 days what most are planning? Put me in for 2 nights starting Friday. Electric is single 30A, 9.5' beam.

This is definitely one of my big concerns. Hopefully there will be others heading at the same time with a little more experience. I know you may be coming from another area and may not be available but, If you are I will be glad to follow!
I don't draft as much as some bigger vessels and I hope this helps. Last thing I need to do is ground the boat with my wife and kids onboard....can you say "Sold"?
Seriously, I will do my diligence and try and plot a good course. I remember last year you and Russ talking about which bouys to follow etc. I hope we have that good intel this year too!
Block Island really sounds cool but, for my wife, being out of sight of land may not be an option.

Todd, I'll run in with you....that is if we can follow Brian  A jump to Block would be awesome but the wife is just not comfortable. I'll need a lot more boat, and older kids before we make that trip.

With fuel management in mind, how long of a run is it from the locks? I'm not sure if I need to make a stop on the way. My 100g tank does not take me very far.

Paul,
My wife is not comfortable either. Actually I don't know if I am even comfortable with this. That is why it is only an idea at the moment. You know Brian said it is only 45 mins from MYC. That made it a little more enticing to me. Either way it will be a good time!!
As far as fuel goes, why don't you stop at Shinnecock? Everyone says its the cheapest there and it's somewhere around the midpoint of the trip. I'll either gas up to or just hang until you do.

Alex,
I plan on staying @ MYC Fri, Sat & Poss, sunday night. Sunday will be dependant on my wifes work schedule and the weather or not we do Block. I will firm that up as we get closer. My beam is 11' 6" and I use (2) 30 Amp power cords. I do have some splitters if need be!

Oh, there was no doubt I need to fuel on the trip. My plan was to fuel up through the locks in Shinnecock. I'm just not sure if I need a 2nd sip to complete that leg. I'm probably OK, I just get nervous seeing a low gauge. I figure my burn will be roughly 18-20 gal/hr

45 minutes sounds really easy, and leaving from MYC you can time it best by the weather. Its an idea for myself as well. Heck, running the wife and kids over VIA ferry is always an option.

Good point. I have a couple of pigtail adapters if needed. The 50/125 -> 30A AKA Watchhill plug and the "normal" 50/250 -> 30A

That's a good option. If you guys think that admirals and kids will be comfortable more taking the ferry, then it's worth it to make the trip happen. Just keep in mind that by the time you guys get to MYC, admirals will have a good idea if they ok to go on your boats vs. ferry.

That's what I'm afraid of........:smt043

Hey Todd, I can give some slack to Paul, but I think you're running out of excuses on 330DA .....it's very seaworthy and comfortable boat. It should be very comfortable and enjoyable trip from GSB to MYC.

BTW, if you guys want we can meet somewhere in Shinneckock Bey and shoot for Shelter Island (WNH) for the night. It should be lots of fun. I personally prefer to mix the ports vs. staying in one for 3 nights, unless it's something like Block.

I got you on the list Nick. Welcome aboard.

That's why I stick with boating

Marshall,

That's a big question. It all depends on how you're plannig to get the. There're two options:

1. Straight run from MI to Montauk (~115-120NM)
2. Go around on the inside. MI to Shinnecock Inlet (~80-85NM), thru the Shinnecock Canal, passing Shelter Island (on the north or south sides).

My suggestion for people who don't take many long trips, don't do it in a single run. You and your crew will be very tired. Break it down in two legs and find a port of your interest midway somewhere. Also, I don't think it's the best approach to do a straight run in your 330DA (due to fuel capacity limit).

Hope this helps.
Thanks Alex, We've got family in Northport so we'll probably stop there overnight. There's a nice marina there the Britania YC and Mother in-laws house is 2 blocks away!

I got good news guys. Dockmaster replied that as long as we have over 10 boats we might get a discount. I was right thinking about the min. stay. He confirmed that they have 2 night minimum stay policy. So, please plan your trips accordingly.
