Fighting the disease

Guys - if you are in this category - unless you have a reason for needing a 4 door, you should look at the Mercedes CL55 AMG, CL60 AMG or even the CL 550 or 600. We have the CL55 and it is the best car I have ever driven by far, incredibly good ride for a German car and boy what a finish and good looks.

Hmmm ya'll got me thinking , pretty sure I'm going to take a breth and slow down a bit , it's always nice when you can get great advice from gents like you guys . I do know one thing, a Cadillac is not much better . 2012 SRX , new heater, new heater motor , new AC unit all NOT under warrantee too many miles over 100,000 but no help from GM

Boltman

I'm not saying that the repairs on the SRX are acceptable, but if they are painful to you then you really really really need to run/sprint away from the BMW (the SRX will look like child's play), unless of course you are leasing and turning it in at the end of the lease before the mileage and age and ensuing issues and extremely costly repair and maintenance bills start racking up..................

PS I figured I'd point out that I'm not in sales either, I do not have a horse in this race ...............

I've got a 2014 M5 with 6,000 miles on it. It's a nice car but doesn't really "do it" for me. I suspect after a few months the 7 won't do it for you any more either, Robert. I've started looking at used Ferrari's, 360's and 430's....I've been surfing Hemmings and other collectible car web sites. They're just as bad as the boat porn that is Yachtworld. Wait a few months and if you're still hot to get the 7, buy it.

The 360 is a fun car! For us it was 360 and newer truck, or X5 and newer boat. I am enjoying the X5, but part of me wants the thrill of the $10k 15,000 mile service that only comes with a Ferrari.

I just love ALL of the low mileage Ferrari advertisements that all PROUDLY proclaim that a MAJOR (read expensive) service was just completed, I always think to myself: that should scare the hell out of people but the draw of the sexy (to some eyes) looking body and that F1 aural orgasmic exhaust note and the envious eyes (you get to say that's right I have one) and extremely privately kept exorbitant maintenance and repair bills is just simply irresistible, I guess.

I liken those cars to Trophy Brides/Trophy Girlfriends, hot/sexy as hell, everyone thinks it must be really awesome to be you, everyone stares, however they are troublesome, irksome, annoying, finicky, expensively trite, and if one ever took ego out of the equation one would realize they are NOT worth the headaches.

Id rather cuddle up with the cute down to earth sexy girl next door and be happy, rather than be miserable every day of my life but have a sexy Trophy on my arm for people to admire

I couldn't agree more. Once we learned of the maintenance costs, we figured the boat would be cheaper! I can say that some people talk the same way about boating, but they don't understand the entertainment value.

I will admit that I love the styling of the car!

I have had 7 BMWs. My current one is an M5. They are the best driving cars out there IMO. That being said Germans are known for their solid mechanicals and excellent craftsmanship, unfortunately electronics are not their strong suit. So if you get a used one make sure it has a warranty that lasts the time/mileage you plan on keeping it or be prepared for large repairs costs for what seem to be little problems. Most of which are hard to sort out yourself because they are electronic so you need their computer for diagnostics. I would never talk anyone out of buying one, so don't get me wrong they are worth the grief. They are a lot like a boat in that way. If you buy a used one some of the savings you get to keep in your pocket by not buying new will be spent on repairs.

I love BMW as well, but they are exactly like owning a boat, constant worry about someone hitting them, curbs, shopping carts hitting them while parked at the store. The only thing I don't like about them is the down time it takes to fix them. Outside of that, I've had my fair share of nice vehicles.

a happy wife is more fun than a car. keep her happy, if she doesn't want you to buy, then you shouldn't.

that said, i was a long time BMW owner (wife's car) and last year got her a Mercedes (AMG one). way outperforms any BMW we've had and i think more sporty. wife loves it and all my son's friends think its the coolest car around (red seat belts look awesome)! drives incredible and doesn't have the BMW 'bog'.

personally, i just sold my Porsche as i only drove it about 1000 miles a year, and kinda streamlining, so not a fan of extra cars right now.

Whoa! What a great thread! After all we can't just talk about boats all the time! I owned a few BMW's including the 750 and loved them all. I'm now driving a Mercedes E550 because I felt like the 750li was just too big. They all came with 4 years of maintenance included.

I would certainly advise the CPO option which should give you peace of mind. BTW there are tons of these cars on the Internet so don't ever feel like your gonna lose a good deal if you don't pull the trigger. I have a Porsche Carerra 4S convertible which I bought CPO and saved myself 10's of thousands of $'s.

I have no doubt that you've worked hard to be able to acquire such luxuries. There is one important point I think you have to consider.....the pride of driving the car of your dreams. You deserve it!

So, pull up to the marina with your wife and kids, look at your boat and your car and the joy you've provided for your family and rejoice at Thanksgiving for giving yourself the opportunity to be so fortunate.

I agree with Richie and Brewster. Buy the wife a car she loves and get something you like. Cars are like boats in that they should never be considered a financial investment. Make it an emotional investment and sometimes it makes the upkeep worth it. Modern V8 Ferraris and the V12 GT cars like the 456-612/FF are actually much less headaches. Porsches, BMW M cars, and AMG cars are in the same boat. Buy it IF you love it, buy it if you can afford it and your spouse won't kill you.

I thought we were supposed to look out for each other??

The following is an excerpt from Forbes 15 New Cars to avoid drum roll please and the number 1 car is:

BMW’s flagship sedan seems to have lost its edge in recent years. It’s wrapped in languid styling and just doesn’t feel as sporty as it did in earlier renditions; an odd product lineup includes an expensive and not especially efficient gas-electric hybrid model. Consumer Reports takes the 7 Series to task for being “a ponderous, technology-laden vehicle with ungainly handling,” and is included in the publication’s lists of lowest-scoring cars, worst overall values and most expensive operating costs in its class. Not to pile on, but it also gets a rock-bottom resale value rating from ALG and a below average performance score from J.D. Power.

Doesn't Forbes advise against boat ownership also?

Looking back at my posts I advised to ponder other cars for those reasons. But like a boat, cars are often emotional purchases. If we let practicality rule the purchase we would likely be enjoying an 18' johnboat with a 25hp outboard. To me, AMG cars fulfill an excellent compromise of performance and everyday practicality with a small increase in costs per mile. The depreciation is a factor but that's why I suggested buying CPO cars.

Yes I'm considering a CPO car if you go to auto trader online , you can see the depreciation levels , it's rough man.... On the other hand , can anyone tell me of a car, boat , plane or Train that is s great buy and doesn't depreciate??im thinking there are a lot of people who own houses now that have depreciated , I know mine did and hasn't come back
As for performance , BMW isn't known for that until you get into the M series , I've had performance , it was a 2011 GT500 shelby, nothing could beat it , but the ride was loud from tire noise but it's the fastest American muscle made and it was fun on a hot summer day. Looking for a large 4 door sedan with 500hp and AWD , and BMW is my goal. If I can just wait for spring and pick one up for 30,000 less than brand new ill be ok with that. I do like the thought of BRAND NEW , because nobody else had ruined it or Ragged on it.

Forbes probably does recommend against purchasing boats, I have no idea, sorry, nothing personal, just thought it was funny stumbling across that Forbes article on the yahoo crawl, when this topic was garnering such a diverse response.

In retrospect I should have typed LOL or joke after "I thought we were supposed to look out for each other" I thought it was understood (silly me) and for the record you did recommend AMG cars and others.

Don't discount the Panamera Turbo and the newer E63 and S63 AMG cars as well. The AMGs now have available AWD(4-Matic) and the Panny is standard AWD. All three of those will meet your needs as well. They also all have available carbon ceramic brakes which do command a new car premium(8-12k) but if you buy one used, your maintenance costs drop because they last FAR longer. Like 200k miles if you don't track the car. They may be a little more noises when cold but that will subside as the car warms up. I also do my own homework and call dealers to get quotes for annual maintenances and brake jobs, look at Tire Rack for prices on tires, and do insurance costs to analyze what I'm looking at. I bought an E55 over the M5 years ago simply because the insurance was half the cost with everything else being the same. M cars have a unique identifier in the VIN and insurance companies loved seeing the $$ signs

A BMW is a fine way to achieve your goals and I don't think you will get burned bad with a current generation 7. Now if you were talking an 02-09 or whatever the made them until, I'd say run. Fast. Like Bayliner fast.

I know you were kidding. So was I. Think it's funny when places like Forbes comment on consumables like that. I'm sure they have great things to say about buying $100 bottles of wine and Tumi luggage but those still seem popular.

I'm glad you picked up on my humor, phew

I gave the Forbes article some respect because they quoted Consumer Reports, ALG and JD power, seemed like they actually did some homework although it does appear as if we are barking up the wrong tree however as "the Boltman" has his heart set on the BMW

Having owned multiple AMGs as well as a GL550 for my wife now, we also had a BMW for her several years that unfortunately got sold after the second kid came along. The BMW was an amazing car and honestly, was cheap to own for the small amount we drove it. The 7 is on my list as is several AMG cars that will suit my needs and wants.

I have to disagree Boltman....

Shamrock , it's ok to agree to disagree Hahaja but that was 1 drag race and that GT500 driver was asleep at the light , those cars are scary fast , that's why I sold mine ,forget for a minute what car you're driving and bam your dead!!! Reason most GT500s lose a drag race , the car won't hook up because of too much HP..

I am a mustang lover I 'm just throwing some entertainment out here. Had a 89GT 5.0 got rid of it for the same reason I told my wife " I'm going to kill myself in this thing" I found myself eating all the imports with their girlfriends pointing and commenting about the old guy in the old mustang. Till they where looking at the tailights haha. Enjoy whatever you decide to drive !!!!!
