And So The Journey Begins

I noted that some people made comments on the road I was traveling on during my journey so I thought you might like to actually see what our major highways are like. Forget the Interstates that you have in the USA our major remote area highways are only two lanes, that is one lane in each direction and they can be as straight as a gun barrel.

WHATS THE SPEED LIMIT??? IF ANY:wow:

Well a quick addendum to this thread.

I have just driven back from Adelaide and found an email from my broker to let me know that the mechanic who inspected our boat for the buyer, who was the same mechanic we used for our inspection report on this same boat, has scared the buyer off by stating the boat needed approximately $5000 worth of repairs to the engines.

I am furious at this mechanic, for a start I had paid him to repair everything he found wrong with the engines when he inspected them for us which included new risers, all new filters, spark plugs, and carrying out 100 hour services on both motors. This was the same mechanic that stuffed our genset by continually flicking the start switch which eventuated in the starter motor jaming and then destroying itself.

I have just had the genset repaired at a cost over $2000.00 and now this turkey has spouted a load of garbage to the potential buyer about the motors needing $5K worth of repairs. The broker has tried his best to alleviate the buyers fears by getting another mechanic in to give another opinion on any repairs needed but I think we can effectively kiss this buyer goodbye. What really annoys me the most is that we agreed to accept a purchase price of just $93K after coming down from the recently reduced price of $110K and now this happens. So if it had sold at 93K it would mean that we would have come down $42K on the inital listing price of $139K

Sounds as if the mechanic was trying to drum up some business from the next owner. It should be prohibited for any qualified Marine Inspector to charge for repairs on any boat he had inspected IMO. Too much of a possible conflict.

Yep of this I have no doubt at all. He charged us $4000 for engine repair work and now he is trying to get $5000 off this potential purchaser, just a huge scam artist if you ask me.

What an A-hole!! This guy should not only be banned from working on boats he inspects, he should be banned from inspections! What, did he miss all of this when he did the first inspection? The guy is a friggin bozo and deserves a swift kick to the jimmy IMHO!!!

Sounds like it is time to do a little Internet trashing of this guy. Simply start a blog or any online forum with his name and company name in the title and tell everyone what he does. When someone does a Google search of his name or company that will be the first link that Google shows. Keep updating it so a Google search keeps showing it first.

Or go down there with a Shotgun and "Saltpeter" his A$$! :smt013
Sorry for your Troubles Paul!

Paul,

Are you using the same broker that you purchased your boat from and is now selling for you. Brokers tend to advise prospective buyers who they could use to survey and he/she may have an affiliation
with the mechanic

I definitely agree, it stinks of drumming up business for himself imo.

While I would love to take this approach I would be leaving myself wide open to a slander suite I think.

Cheers Bugsy, I just don't want this mechanic on my boat again but what can you do when they are hired by a buyer to do an inspection. I can just write off any buyer that uses this guy for mechanical inspections in the future as he will do the same thing with them as he has done this time.

Yes Oz I am using the same broker but all they do is hand out a list of brokers that work in the area, the mechanic they use is the guy that they brought in for the second opinion and this guy is good. When I was having trouble with the starboard transmission he came and fixed it for free.:wow: How rare is that in the boating industry.

I would be very happy for the broker to push this guy on to buyers but they do try to stay impartial which is why they simply hand out a list of surveyors and mechanics who do engine surveys. It is just unfortunate for me that this buyer selected the same guy off the list that I did and his name is not even at the top of the list.:smt013

Yes well....you just never know what sort of backroom dealings and relationships could be going on. Names can still get dropped casually in passing...and remembered...and it's the first one noticed on a list. I'm finding it harder and harder to trust anyone these days.

Very unfortunate story.

I would think your broker (and any others that hear about this guy )would promptly remove him from the list,as he will damage thier credibility soon in the pursuit of easy money.Good luck

I think he has already been deleted from their list by what the broker has told me, it is tough enough trying to make a living as a broker in todays market without them having to put up with drop kicks like this mechanic.

Okay we must have truely offended the Gods at some stage, we have just received the second opinion quote and it hs just shattered us. Here we were thinking that we would just sell the boat and move on with life and now both engines have to come out and have the sumps replaced. We give up, there is nothing we can do to alleviate the issue and we sure as hell wont be able to sell the boat with the engines in this condition. Somehow we are going to have to find a way to come up with the money, we tried the route that our surveyor and mechanic did not report this when we bought the boat and even the second opinion mechanic has stated that the few months since our inspections would not be enough time to develope this kind of problem and it would have been there prior to our purchase. Anyway that is our luck we tried to do the right thing and still got majorly stung, so now to find another $6000.00. Whats worse is even after getting this work done we are still going to have to lower the price to get any interest in it.

We could reduce the price of the boat without getting the work done but the brokerage is now saying that now they have been made aware of the problem they are bound by law to advise any prospective buyer of the problem. Which basically means that nobody is going to be interested from the get go to even worry about price reduction to cover the repairs.

Here is the second opinion quote:

Ouch ,i gotta say that boat must love you ,it doesnt want to leave you for sure.Of course like any golddigger that b!#$^ gotta go!

Paul'
I'm sorry to hear that. I would probably invest the 6 grand in a hit on the a-hole surveyor. Then send the boat on auto-pilot around the african horn and have it hijacked!! Then put a claim in with the insurance company. Of course, very unrealistic here I just sense your frustration and was day dreaming a bit. Good luck.

Maybe you should have this this trucked back to your house and just leave it on the hard for a while. Then you could address these issues at a later date. You definitely need to get out of this "Ground Hog day" type marina/brokerage. They are really taking a liking to your derrier as they continue to violate it!

Well believe it or not we have a buyer who is dead keen. Just when I thought the outlook could not get much worse with the stock markets crashing around the world I get a call from a guy today who has made an offer that I accepted. Yep we took a hit on the boat but not as much as if we were to hold on to it for another 12 months or more with this boat market going down the gurgler. I have been following the used boat market here pretty well the past few months and the prices have only been going down and down.

The price of fuel is not helping of course, but the whole marine industry is in a real nose dive at the moment and I don't see it recovering in the near future. Better to be out of debt at the moment I think rather than chucking buckets of money away each month.

Maybe when the dust settles a bit we will look at getting a trailer boat so we can keep it in the garage of our holiday home in Port Stephens.

Anyway we could be jumping the gun as the deal aint done till the money is in our bank account.

Good luck Paul! I will keep my fingers crossed! Just make sure that sh!t head surveyor is nowhere to be found this time!
