And So The Journey Begins

HI All,

Glad I am providing some fun for those that are following me. :) I am now in Port Stephens and been checking on the slip etc today. I am flying tomorrow to Brisbane and then driving down to the Gold Coast. I will be at the boat on the 02 Feb. I will have the spot active again during the week then it will be on again permanently when I put to sea.

Cheers

Paul

Damn, my luck is not doing too well with the weather Gods. There is a sever Tropical Cyclone approaching the north Queensland coast. Here is the predicted track, this is going to cause some big swells on the southern Queensland coast. I am hoping that this TC will change course and head back out to sea but not likely. Looking at this storm reminds me of the movie The Day After.

Here is the track link http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65002.shtml

Here is the story with an image of the cyclone, this thing is massive and going to cause a lot of damage. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/31/3126169.htm

The good news is I do have my brother-in-law as a crewman so I am a lot happier now.

This storm is going to wreck a lot of boats that is for sure. There are a lot of folk currently trying to find a safe harbour in the far north Queensland coastal areas. I have not seen a storm of this intensity for a long time, this is a monster.

I think the ratio is 1 inch of rain is equal to 10 or 12 inches of snow. Keep that cyclone in your hemisphere! I've had weather play into my boating plans, but WOW, that is one mean looking storm. I bet that will send some nasty waves 100's of miles in all directions.

Good luck to you; I too am watching your SPOT page.
And good luck with the storm!

Oh heck you can still watch and think how lucky you are that you only have snow to contend with.:smt043

Back about 6 or 7 years ago we were rafted up at Fairlee Creek which is just off of the Chesapeake Bay. A storm came up around 3 or 4pm and made the day look like night. Winds were clocked at 76 miles per hour. It only lasted maybe 20 to 30 minutes but when it cleared there were boats all over the place. What a mess and it wasn't a Cyclone!
So, I'll be watching and praying for your safe journey. ~

The problem you have is the distance you can travel on 90% fuel leaving 10% in reserve.
If the swell is huge then Post Macquarie might be out of the question. then where do you go??

in fact if the swell is to big you won't even get out of the sea way at the gold coast.
here is a link to wave height down the NSW coast.

Cheers Ozzie, the swell charts are showing a swell of 5.8 feet at the seaway on Thursday. Dropping to 2.2 feet by Saturday.

I will be keeping a close eye on the charts for both swell and wave heights.

I was at the Port Stephens marina today and spoke to a guy who just came downfrom PoRt Macq. and he had a dream run until he arrived at the marina where his transmission blew on him and he had to go nose in to his birth on the drift.

man I can't even imagine being in a storm like that. hopefully everyone will be safe but it looks like it will be hard to do with a storm of this size.

Well it has officially turned into the perfect storm, this is now the biggest cyclone to ever hit Australia and has turned Cat 5. I feel very sad for all those poor souls caught in North Queensland waters as there is no where to run to, there are no safe anchorages this storm is going to smash everything in its way. I was just speaking to one of the marine businesses in Runaway Bay marina today who had just had a phone call from the manager at the Cairns marina and he reckons the guy was suicidal due to what he knew was about to happen there.

Reports of people trying to flee Cairns by road causing a traffic jam on the Bruce Highway heading south. These people are going to be out in the open when this hits.

I am a long way south of this storm and I am not putting to sea till next week providing the seas are okay to do so. I am not on a suicide mission and will take the safe option of waiting out the big swells.

So Paul, how is everything with you down under? Did you and your boat survive the storm? When's the new sail date?

looks like hes on a walkabout.
