My mechanic/jack of all trades was at the boat yesterday and today. Both A/C systems charged and cleaned. Some new hoses for both engines and the generator. Duck bill valves changed in guest head. Working up a plan to change out the older Raymarine E120 Chartplotter and upgrade the autopilot. Great to have most of the work done during crappy weather. Tomorrow promises to be a nice day so its time to go out for a ride, find a marina that has a pump out station (far and few between here in SE FL) and maybe stop for a dockside lunch. Oh, the new name went on this past Monday. This boat is quickly becoming OUR boat.

I just upgraded my autopilot this past week. Got a great deal at the Chicago boat show and purchased it from a dealer in Buffalo that has also given great tech support for the install. It was a lot cheaper than I originally had thought it would be or was "told" it would be by local guys. :)

Don't keep us in suspense. What did you buy?

Ohh, I'm sorry...LOL

I purchased the EV-200 Power package: Part number T70156 for a type 1 drive. It comes with the new Evolution ACU (control unit), P70r display head and the EV1 sensor core. I also ordered the S100 remote control to put me over the $2,000.00 threshold for the $500.00 rebates being offered! It does come with a new rudder sensor, but there isn't a need to replace that because the new system works with the old. The Raymarine guy I was speakign with is also a dealer out of Buffalo and he kept telling me that "Suggested retail" is $1,999.00 followed by a wink wink...but call me after the show and I can send it to you directly from my store. The price was $1,799.00 when I placed the order with him.

I already had a backbone for the SeaTalk ng communications between my 3 MFD's, so this was literally plug and play. The new EV1 Sensor core is quite advanced compared to the fluxgate compass we originally have from 1999. (as you would imagine). The new core can be placed anywhere, so it made it an easy install. Replacing the "brains" or ACU took about 10 minutes to pull the old out and plug the new in, but another 45 minutes to clean up 20 years of wiring mess under the dash..LOL Too many old wires in there not being used with 100 extra zip ties doing nothing. It's my OCD, I like a clean look and unnecessary wires bother me. Here is the link to the new system: http://www.raymarine.com/view/index-id=8239.html
It can cost slightly more if you have a type 2 drive pump, so check that out. It will be printed on the top of the drive pump in the engine room.

And for the relaxing side of boating, a new float pad for those great days on Lake Michigan...A new 6'x8' inflatable pad :)

The admiral loves to layout on the water and catch the sun or sit and dangle the feet. We had been using a Lillypad product but that was just too much work for the two of us...it was great when the boys were home and wanted to take it out. The rule was, if we take it out, you roll it up! That made them think twice. :) When we ordered it at the show they offered custom logo'ing, so we added our boat name logo.

It was a simple question from you, but I made it a long answer....sorry.

Interesting.
I'm just going through some electronics upgrades too. We updated everything in 2008 when I bought the boat: E screens, HD radar, Sirius weather, etc but kept the autopilot. Now we are replacing everything except the radar which is digital anyways. The autopilot was going to be the EV-200 but in checking with Raymarine forum, I was advised that the new EV-150 would work fine. The main difference is that it does not power the backbone. So I'm keeping the Type 1 pump (Sea Ray told me to) and rudder indicator but replacing the ACU, control head, and heading sensor with the EV-1. I know the EV-1 will go anywhere but I am installing exactly where the old sensor was under the salon floor by running the ng backbone down to it.
Let's update as we go along.

From the Raymarine tech I have been working with in Buffalo: I asked him why I couldn't use the lesser expensive EVO-150 system?

His response:
No, the EVO 150 is able to handle a type 1 pump light duty. I would not recommend it on a 460 as a type 1 can exceed the rated amperage on the 150 ACU. Most 460s would be a type 2 pump, but since yours is not the safe bet is to go with the 200 as it can do the job without any possibility of amperage issues.

I think I decided to go "lazy" on the Core placement for a couple reasons:
1. If it needs to be adjusted for alignment, being at the helm area will be much easier. I installed it in the locker to my right foot...the only other thing in there are SOS lights and binoculars. If I need to make adjustments to heading, it will be easy.

2. The tech said they have placed them in so many different locations and found that no location made any difference in the overall performance of the unit. IE center of the boat down low, or high on a mast, off to 1 side etc. They all have performed perfectly. Since location wasn't an issue, why make the install more complicated than it needs to be?

Look forward to your install updates.

Thank you for the informative response. My boat is a 2000. From what I can determine, the navigation equipment was last updated in 2006. The Raymarine autopilot appears to be working but the display died as I was moving the boat from where it was purchased to my home dock. I thought I would update the chart plotter from the old E120 and put in a newer autopilot but my tech tells me the Raymarine Radar will not be compatible with the new electronics. So my dilemma is to either find a new display for an old autopilot and buy memory cards for the E120 or just bite the bullet and update the entire navigation/radar/autopilot system.

Like the floating Lilly Pads. There are several areas in my boating area that are great for anchoring out. In the past, I have tied off floatation cushions for those that want to lounge in the water but I like the idea of the floating pad. Thanks for sharing.

The original autopilot will work with the new electronics, but he is correct, the old radar array will not. For a couple seasons I had the original open array connected to a separate screen, a 2006 c80. Last year I replace them both with the Quantum and another a98. The new a98 is really dedicated to just radar and the first a98 is use for the chart plotting. I also have an a68 which I like for the Fusion stereo and engine data.

Although the original autopilot worked with the newer MFD's, they didn't always play nice. Sometimes it acted like a red-headed step child and got moody. :) We would be cruising along on a course and it would just decide to not track anymore...really strange. Other times, it would run 4 straight hours without any issues. No rhyme or reason to why it would stop communicating. The other issue was it liked to "walk' alot. Our XTE would vary by 1,000 feet each direction as we headed up the lake.

I am excited to get on the water and use the new system!! Have fun.

If you are interested, visit the Raymarine website and go to "Raymarine Forums", under Support. I started a thread there a few years ago when I was first thinking of updating my Classic E screens to the then-current eS series. I did not proceed at the time thinking that one step didn't justify the expense. Well, I restarted the thread entitled ""Questions on a new configuration" JP460 (under Product Selection Assistance) and have embarked on a new system with Axiom and Pro screens. Everything is Lighthouse 3 enabled so it's advancing two generations I suppose. In the process I learned a lot from moderator Chuck. He's an amazing resource! He suggested choosing the EV-150 and other components.

So far I have the Realvision 12 degree transducers installed and everything old (except the digital radar) ripped out. I'm working with an excellent electronics guy and am looking forward to the new system.

45Gunner's question about radar compatibility can be answered by posting on the forum or calling them. Essentially any Raymarine radar that is analogue will not work with the new screens. I changed to the HD digital in 2008 when they were fairly new. That radar, 4kw 48" HD open array, is still compatible now; I simply need an adapter for the RayNet HS5 switch.

Hope that helps.

All information is informative and appreciated. Thank you.

Just a side note. I have an autopilot head for Raymarine if you need it just pm me. Also I put all Furuno equipment in my boat if you’re interested in that setup.

After doing hours of research and some soul-searching, I have decided to retrofit my boat with the latest and greatest Garmin goodies. Changing out the chart-plotter, radar, autopilot, and adding a few extra goodies such as an Infra-red camera. I bought a boat to do boating my way and this should complete the project and the mission.

Sounds like fun! Take before and after pics.

don’t forget the nmea 2000 network goodies, any external gps, heading sensor, tv antenna/satellite options, vhf radio/hailer, ais, and WiFi.

I will take before and after pictures and post them. I am planning to have the work done while I will be away on a cruise so I don't miss any boating time.

Good luck with your project. I am doing the same over the winter but staying with Raymarine since I had their digital HD radar already.

I too am looking forward to pics and info on the new electronics. Over the past two winters, we tackled some of the big items with the tyical, little ones. we did new canvas, new cockpit flooring, and last year was re-doing all the cockpit seating. The only thing left is to redo the electronics. I was at the Lauderdale show this year, Tecnografic was great to talk too on getting new dash panels made. I was surprised how reasonable he was, as they had 460 panels there in their both...So that got me started.

Questions on smaller repairs:
I am currently replacing the Oceanair hatch screen/shade combo. If any of you have done this, let me know if you had issues on finding the correct sizing for replacing. I took it out before, cleaned it, but that didn't help. Just needs to be replaced.

In the rear stateroom, the push-in latches are shot on the two drawers that slide out. These are right under the buttons that lower the rear bed/sofa. I have handfuls of new Southco latches for everything else on the boat, but these are slightly longer as the face panel is affixed onto the front of the drawer. I'll be damned if I can find the correct length. Even if I add those little rubber spacer collars, it doesn't seem to work out. IF any of you have dealt with this, I'm all ears. Its now turned into one of those simple little things that I am ready to gaslight out of spite.
