If you have SMX pumps you can try this (but with the Sherwoods you can't, you're messing with a key):
Use a tomato soup can. Cut one end off entirely and then cut about a 2" hole in the other end.
Then "load" the soaped-up impeller into the can, outer end in first, and insert the whole arrangement right into the SMX pump body. Take a ratchet handle or similar and push the impeller right into place while pulling out the can by gripping it with a pliers or a screwdriver. A soup can fits perfectly into the 1730 SMX.
I found this technique on a sailboaters' blog. Works pretty well but with the those pumps the key is that the impellers are splined and a couple of tie-wraps work pretty well too. I got too frustrated with the Sherwood pumps and got rid of them.
