If you have SMX pumps you can try this (but with the Sherwoods you can't, you're messing with a key):
Use a tomato soup can. Cut one end off entirely and then cut about a 2" hole in the other end.
Then "load" the soaped-up impeller into the can, outer end in first, and insert the whole arrangement right into the SMX pump body. Take a ratchet handle or similar and push the impeller right into place while pulling out the can by gripping it with a pliers or a screwdriver. A soup can fits perfectly into the 1730 SMX.
I found this technique on a sailboaters' blog. Works pretty well but with the those pumps the key is that the impellers are splined and a couple of tie-wraps work pretty well too. I got too frustrated with the Sherwood pumps and got rid of them.

I have the SMX pumps. Frankly I have no problem installing the impellers with just my hand. I squeeze the edge of the blades together as I turn and push the impeller. That gets all the edges of the blades inside the pump. Then I keep turning and gently push until the splines line up. Then I push it all the way in with my palm. Takes like 10 seconds. No tools or grease or anything.

I agree. But it's easier on my port engine but still use two tie-wraps. I sometimes need to use a trick for the starboard because of lack of access. Yours would be opposite.
BTW, how long do you get out of the SMX impellers? I find they last a long time.

I replaced them at 4 years and 600 hours. They looked new when I removed them. I am going to run these until they fail to see how long they will go.

I have the same experience so now I have a couple of used sets that look like new, despite three years of service. With the original Sherwood impellers I had missing pieces of vanes every year that I had to retrieve from the bottom of the aftercooler.
It now takes me only 10 minutes to replace the impeller on the easy side and 20 minutes on the other. With no key to drop.
I will be interested to see how long you get out of this set of SMX impellers.

Can you advise how many hours it took to remove the floor section ready to start work please?

Graham
I've done it twice, second time it took about 3 hours because I knew where all the various screws and bolts are. First time I spent an entire day getting all the furniture removed and deck lid unbolted. The hardest thing is removing the fiberglass side to the rear bench on the port side. You need to access the nuts from the rear locker by first removing the panel that has the water in and spigot, then use a mirror to find the nuts and get a socket on them while someone turns them from the other side. I didn't have a helper but was able to use voice grips to hold the nuts. Everything else is pretty straight forward, just use a mirror to find all the little screw locations.

I've got to leave for 4 days on Wednesday, hope I get to meet you before you depart...
Likewise....except there has been a slight glitch and it doesn't look like we are going to close until the end of the week and I will most likely be there on Friday and launch for my dock on Saturday.

Sorry I’ll miss you. I fly in at 1530 on Saturday.
If the boat is still there, its most likely I will be also. If its gone, than I have departed with it to bring it to my dock in Boynton Beach.

I really thought we would close on it this Monday or Tuesday, as the saying goes, stuff happens and it looks more like Friday that we will close. Meanwhile, my wife was going to be my crew on the journey back home. She took a nasty spill a couple of days ago and has injured her back. Her presence will be in doubt. I have several volunteers to take her place, for now. Stay tuned.

Merry Christmas All! We went to the boat this weekend and had the Salon AC unit go out.

I took a picture or the the Tag and its a CruiseAir SXR16C-S4. I was hoping somebody could
give me some guidance on the replacement for this unit. Thanks in advance. I dont know what I
would do without this great group of people

Easy replacement. Dometic turbo 16.

If you don’t have a local suppler then citi marine store is a good option. You will need the little adapter to use your current smx control panel so ask for that. Other then that it’s just simple replacement

I was amazed at how easy it came off. I used a razor blade to get under the edge, then a plastic puddy knife to pry it off. It took less than 1 minute! Bought the new emblem on ebay and installed after hitting the glue with an eraser wheel and some acetone.

The letters are raised, I ordered them from chromeemblems.com, very happy with the updated look.

Wolf, Any chance you have the data file that you used for the engine gateways? I've got them as well, but have very limited data from my engines. RPM, fuel consumption is about all I can remember getting.

Thanks
Hi Doug,
Sorry it took so long to get back with you...spent a week in Portugal and another week in Singapore with Thanksgiving in between....just getting over jet lag..LOL

Here is the file on the SD card in my stbd. engine.
PROTOCOL=KAD
ENGINE_ID=1
TANK_PRIMARY_ID=2
TANK_SECONDARY_ID=3
BATTERY_1_ID=OFF
BATTERY_2_ID=OFF
REQ_0=293,OFF,ANY

Hope that helps.

that's very helpful, thanks for doing it.

Getting a bunch of little things accomplished...or at least I feel like I'm accomplishing something. :)

Replaced the 2 pump system with one 5.3 gpm pump. This required a little re-routing of the incoming water lines into 1, as well as the output line being replaced with a more flexible hose as opposed to the 22 mm stiff PEX pipe.

The accumulator tank was shot, and in a STUPID location, so I removed it from behind the fridge and added it closer to the pump. You'll notice the line coming out of the accumulator now goes to the wash down spigot in the bilge under the battery tray. It originally came off the 22 mm main feed to the boat opposite the holding tank.

Then I added a 12vdc solenoid to allow the water tank to be filled from the rear city water inlet hose. When we are at the docks, we generally connect to city water, so why not allow it to fill/top off the tank when desired. Newer boats are coming out with the same type of system so I figured why not an older boat too. Since I removed the second water pump, the wiring to the switch was already there so I connected the solenoid to pump switch 2. I really like to use the water tank along with the city water to keep the water tank fresh so we use both all summer long and we never have any foul smelling water from the tank. Now, no more climbing over the boat with a hose to fill with water. :)

Lastly, I added the Camco Tornadoes per a previous discussion on the forum. I took it one step further and plumbed both of them to the rear transom locker where I will be able to connect a hose for flushing rather than dragging it down into the engine room to connect it. Before installing I mocked it up with the 2 tornadoes coming off the same incoming water line and the results were just as good as if it were coming off 1 line. A fun little project, we shall see how well it works. (If it doesn't I can always pull it out and go back to square 1).
