40 sedan bridge forum

Ray,

Thanks! That's very generous of you. Naturally, we have a couple special places to take you out for a drink.

Anyone had occasion to be on a Regal 4080? I'm really partial to Sea Ray but someone told me to look at a Regal also. Little bit less beam, more cluttered inside but man it's pretty. I'd be curious to know the difference in handling and top heavy-ness...

Yup. 1.5 years ago I almost bought one (couldn't agree on price). Then last October, I spent 9 hours on one helping my buddy move one he just purchased from upstate NY, down around Manhattan, up LI Sound into CT.

A couple things to note. Don't get fooled by the "4080". It's the same boat/hull as the 3880 and even the 3780. They just changed the model name (the numbers went up over time). It's a really nice boat. And I'm really impressed with the Regal quality. But, IMHO, it's not the same caliber boat that the 400DB is. It just feels smaller, lower, lighter. You get a lot more room in the 400DB. 2 heads compared to the 4080s one head. And the shower of the 4080 shares the same space as the main head area thanks to a cylindrical tube that you open to shower in. In short, the head isn't good on the 4080. The master birth is bigger on the 400DB also. More walk-around room.

If we call them both 40 foot boats, the Sea Ray feels and rides more like a 45' boat, and the 3780/3880/4080 rides and feels like a 35' boat. The one I was on had gas engines and it performed great. Got up and out of the hole quickly (kinda like a smaller 35' cruiser would). Just my opinion. It's still nice, and well built, but if the prices are comparable, get the sea ray every time.

(I'm sure the regal forums will have different opinions. :) )

That is a GREAT review! Thanks. We really want the 400 but I'm not sure it will work out. We only have 1 or 2 400's picked out and if the first one falls through it'll be a quick slide to another boat. The hull seems much heavier on the Sea Ray's than the Regals and I interpret that as a better ride.

We were looking at 380's for a long time before deciding to look at 410's instead. The idea of diesels won out.
I looked at several Regals while looking for my Sea Ray and really liked them. I did look at a couple of other brands but we quickly dismissed them. I was looking at 03/04 3860's and comparing them to 03/04 380 Sundancers. The 3860 is the express version of what you're looking at which changed names, but little else, to the 4060 in later years.
Anyway, I was pretty impressed with the Regals overall build quality and their express had several layout advantages over the Sea Ray. But, for several reasons we ultimately decided against them for a few reasons.
1. The finish on the cabinets on almost all of the boats we saw was turning milky. This seemed to be a manufacturing problem in those years so keep an eye out for that.
2. The slanted berth in the Master. We had one on our 300 Sundancer and didn't find it comfortable for my wife and I. We like the Sundancers berth better and it was one of the reasons we were looking at bigger boats to begin with.
3. There were a lot less of them on the market to look at.
4. Many of the ones that were listed seemed to be on the market for a pretty long time. Although they were priced more competitively than the comparably sized Sea Rays, my feeling was that it might be that much harder to sell when the time comes.
If the cabinets are OK, the berth suits your needs, and everything else about an individual Regal checks out OK then I think it's a good boat and wouldn't totally rule it out.

There are 2 410s at MarineMax here in Seabrook TX. Also a 460 at a local brokerage. I do know a personal guy who has a diesel 380 so Pm if you want to know about that one.

I just realized you were looking for a DB so these may not work at all. Sorry

Josh

LIFERAFT ONBOARD?

Does anyone carry a liferaft onboard your 400DB? If so, what brand/size and where do you store it? I am considering purchasing a Viking Offshore 6-Man Lift Raft and storing it under the bench seat in the cockpit. Being that my boat is still in winter storage, 3 hours away, does anyone have the measurements of the storage under the bench seat? The dimensions of the liferaft packed in a valise (tote bag) are approximately 30" x 14" x 16" and I wonder if the 16" height is too tall to fit under the bench seat.

I appreciate any input. Thanks!

Best you'll do with the bench seat is 10" and still be able to close it.

Thanks Bill...that's what I was afraid of. 8 inches of snow in Chicago today, but 30 days until I'm back in the water! Can't wait.

I have the "Shipping/Documentation Dimensions" if anyone needs them. I can't figure out how to upload a .pdf here though.

Good day all,

Had a good day on the water yesterday after finishing a project. Thought I would share a pic of recent dinghy davit install I did in the event anyone is considering such addition to their 400 DB.

Regards,
Stephen

Your pics are a little small and low quality. But it looks like your dinghy is raised up quite a bit. Would love to see better pics of your finished project if you have them.

Let's try this again... Downsized the size of image. Thought I would share my davit install with my fellow members.

Wow, that looks great

That picture is a little better

Can you post more pictures

Id like to see how it attaches to the platform.

I created custom SS brackets for the upper attachment point. The key design criteria was that the davits could still rotate for full use of the swim platform and they were low enough on the transom to not interfere with the standard canvas when in use and buttoned down. This resulted in the the upward angle.

Also, in effort to not impact the usable area of the platform (mine is slightly narrow compared to factory original) I mounted everything on transom above he hull to deck joint.

Stephen

This may have been asked, and you can save me time. What is the hose diameter for the genny muffler? I'm looking for both ends of the muffler. Is that 2" in 2.5" out? Both 2"? I'm concideing replacing the muffler with something larger to cut down on the overboard exhaust tone
