Handcraft is the OEM on ours. you can try this number to see if it leads you anywhere.
from the mattress tag: Handcraft mattress company- 400DB FWD #1743223

Another option would be to buy one of those gel-foam mattresses that you see everywhere online and use a razor blade or a good pair of scissors to cut it to the right size. That gel-foam stuff cuts pretty easily.

Hello Everyone,

A couple of questions that I was hoping somebody could help with on my year 2000 sedan:

1. I have the electric couch on the port side. Has anyone figured out how to remove the kick panel ? I am hoping to access the amp that is under that couch.
2. Has anyone figured out how to install a ladder down to the engine room from the aft deck. The current practice is to use the gennie control box which is getting beat up.

thanks

Dave

I am not sure this will help you, but I was able to access my amp between the cushion and the wall while the couch was in the extended position. All of the wires had enough slack to position the amp as needed for replacement.

I was able to remove my amp by simply removing the kickplate at the bottom of the couch. If I remember correctly, there's a bunch of screws holding that kickplate on. Just unscrew them all and it comes out easily. The amp is also screwed in, which can be tricky to get out, but I managed to do it with the couch still in place.

My battery charger just died. Only the starboard engine batteries drained. Now I'm confused as to what batteries do what. Generator battery is understandable, then two batteries for the port engine and two for the starboard engine. So it appears my house power is drawing off of the starboard batteries. There are two more batteries (which I thought were the house batteries) in between the engines on the floor that appear to be wired for 24V. What do these batteries power?

You 24v setup is most likely for bow thrusters. Do you have them on your boat?

My set up is- 1 battery for starboard engine, 1 battery for port engine, two house batteries and a generator start battery. I don't know what the ex factory set up was.

Can we talk generators for a minute. I have only had my 2001 400 Sedan Bridge for two seasons, but I am ready to replace my Westerbeke 8.0 BTDA genny. It is loud, not exhaust loud, but it vibrates and resonates through the entire boat. I have had several mechanics look at it and they say "yup, sounds like a Westerbeke". There is no room for the factory sound shield. I purchased a soft shield last year, but it did not quiet it enough. I have a few dockmates with other gennys in sound enclosures and you can barely hear them when they open their hatches. So, I am ready to replace it. The current space is tight, but I think I can fit a Kohler 9EKOZD and definitely can fit a Fischer Panda 8Kw in there. The Northern Lights M773LW3 is too long, and the Phasors are all too tall. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone been through this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

My kids, 8 & 10 were just asking me the other day what "champagne problems" are (this is also the title of a current Meghan Trainor song. This post is a perfect example. "The generator on my 40 foot yacht is too loud." So thank you for that.

Sorry, I have no real advice, but good luck with your problem.

There is a YouTube of a 400 sedan bridge where the owner added a 2nd muffler to his Westerbeke. Gas but like not much difference to diesel, (it sounds the same on the video). Search for Westerbeke muffler. I just watched it and it is 8 minutes long.

Also on my boat the sound deadening foam on the hatch is in good shape and the generator mechanical noise is not a bother.

Hope this helps. Way cheaper than a whole new genset.

The 8BTD is a mechanical diesel so a good bit of the noise you get is from diesel knock, the rest of it is from valve clatter. Westerbeke has a specific interval for resetting the valve lash and pop testing the injectors........every 500 hours. Do you know the service history and if the valve lash and injectors were serviced before you bought the boat? If not, I would spend that $300 before writing a $15,000 check hoping a new genset is quieter.

I do this on my boat, also an 8.0BTD, and it makes a significant difference in the engine clatter. Resetting the valve lash can be done by your regular diesel mechanic but the injectors will have to be removed and sent out to a diesel specialty shop that is equipped for pop tesing injectors. Pop testing is mounting the injector on a test stand and pumping a high pressure fluid thru them to check the spray pattern and the pressure at which they open. The fluid is a solvent and many times just testing the injectors will clean up the spray pattern. A bad spray pattern causes the injected fuel to enter the combustion chamber in droplets (instead of atomizing the fuel) and droplets increases spark knock and the noise you hear. I sent my injectors to a diesel shop in September and the cost was $75, plus some shipping both ways........not expensive at all, but all my injectors needed was cleaning. If any of the 3 need remanufacturing, the cost will be higher.

Hope that helps...........

I had the valves adjusted on. My 10k westerbeke Tuesday... it really does quiet it down. To be honest I think you could get a larger muffler and/or an air water separator for the exhaust and it would be much better. My buddy/neighbor has a sound shield, I'm not confident they make a bit of difference.

The faucet in my guest head is leaking pretty badly with the knobs shut off. (May have frozen.) Has anyone replaced or repaired it?
Looks like the lines are pretty tight and difficult to access.

...so....close...

Anyone have/heard of issues with the genny taking water through the exhaust due to a faulty vacuum break? Thanks Frank!

Very rare occurrence. The usual problem with vacuum breakers is the valve gets fouled with corrosion and fails to close causing a leak in the bilge.
