220 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

Never drive at highway speeds with the canvas up. I did drive around to the ramp after I got everything up that day but that was the only time the canvas has seen the highway and I never went past 25 miles per hour which is the posted speed limit in the community.

Yes, I got it from Great lakes. They send everything to match up. I had a local company in Panama City install the snaps after SeaRide and I made a attempt at it. I realized that the inexpensive snap tool I purchased from West Marine was a cheap piece of junk and would not cut through the material. It cost me a mear $100 to have the snaps installed professional.

If you boat where there is the potential for a sudden rain shower it is a important item to have handy. Just practice a few times getting it up in a hurry because the roll trick to get the front 3 isen-glass panels in place is a pain if you don't do it right the 1st time.

Good to see everyone posting on this thread again. Begun to notice a issue that keeps popping up with my boat. It's kind of small compared to most, but for some reason the door latch on the head seems to break every two months. Anyone else been having this problem? Any ideas on how I can fix this problem so it doesn't continue to happy. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Wow. I hate to say this out loud, but here I go... In the three years that I've run my 220 I haven't had a broken latch yet...

Call great lakes, give them your boat serial number and the color and they will give you a price. The boat has to be out of a 2 year range for them to sell to you. Yours is a 05 so there should be no problems.

The front the isen-glass panels I bought when I got the boat due to a dealer snafu, I used the credit they issued to get those. The two side panels and back panel cost me a little over $900 3 years later. I believe the original build price sheet called for the whole enclosure to cost around $1800 from a dealer at time of purchase so it was rough $500 in savings to go the route I did.

Now as far as breaking latches are concerning I am talking about the head latch. Mine is made of plastic parts and the trick is to let go of the handle when it swings into place. Most of my riders don't do this and it breaks a plastic piece in the darn thing. A replacement latch now is $200 clams.

The engine/seat hatch never had a latch, newer versions have a stopper latch hidden under the seat.

For those of you with a 5.0L MPI (260hp) and the Bravo 3 (on a SD220), how do you like the power? I currently have the 5.0L MPI and an Alpha on a SD200. I'm in the middle of trading up to a SD220. It has the 5.0MPI and the Bravo. I'm very happy with the power of my SD200 setup. I'm nervous that I'll notice a drop in power with the same engine and bigger boat. Friends and dealer says the Bravo3 should l more than make up the difference. But I never really trust the dealer, and the friends don't have either of these boats. So, I figured you guys would be the best to ask.

I am glad I upgraded to the B3 option. With the stock props 22 pitch I got up to 49.8 mph using a GPS to gage speed. Conditions were on flat river water 1/2 tank of fuel and just the wife and I. With 6 full grown folks on board I have gotten the boat up to 49 flat on smooth water. The 350 mag and 40 extra horses would have been nice, just not in the budget at the time. I don't regret having the 260 hp, it has cranked first time every time over the past 5 years.

About 3 years ago I bought a 2nd set of B3 props, I had them balanced and cupped. I use them most of the time on the boat now, it pops out of the water much faster and I plane at a slower speed. I have pulled two adult skiers behind the boat with no power issues.

If you got the budget, go for the 350 Mag and B3 combo, if not the 5.0L MPI still has plenty of grunt for that boat.

Good luck.

Very happy with my 5.0/B3 set up. When we purchased in 05, we looked at the 220 and the 240 with the same set up. For us, the 240 seemed to drag. I would think that your 200 is over-powered. But you know what they say, better to be over-powered than under-powered...

All in all, the 5.0/B3 setup is more than adequate. I don't get 49 mph in perfect conditions. For me it is probably more like 40 to 45. But top speed hasn't always been what I was looking for. We get on plane nicely when fully loaded - 10 passengers and moderate gear. You'll be happy with the 220.

Sweet. Thanks guys. Top speed isn't my thing either. I'll be very happy if I can get up on plane nicely when loaded! I appreciate the feedback!

Scurrah... You're gonna love this boat. I have the 5.0 MPI with just the alpha. Although I would have loved the B3, I bought this boat used, and right. Sooo... I got what I got; but I love it. I'm more of a cruser, but have pulled 3 tubers with no problem. Bottom line...this boat is sweet.

Well, I bought the 220!! Iceout on Lake Minnetonka (in Minnesota) just happened yesterday. I can't wait to get this out on the water!

Not that I need to worry about it yet, but I'm curious if anyone has any secrets to getting at the Water Pump Impeller on the 220 (5.0L with Bravo3)? It looks like a piece of the engine compartment could come out (requiring some new caulking to put back in). Is that how you'd get close to it? It's that lower starboard pulley. Seems like a bear to get to.

I believe the 220 and 240 are petty similar, and your talking about the engine cowling around the front there. Yes you should be able to take that off to make it somewhat easier but like you said make sure you clean it and caulk it back so it's sealed so deck water doesn't run into your bilge.

Doesn't deck water go into the bilge anyway...

It's been a while since I looked at a 220 but it should be like my 240 there are 2 drains on the deck at the rear of the boat one should be right in front of the step on the starboard side and the other in front of the engine cowling on the port side both of these should have hoses that go to thru-hull drains to their same sides to allow the deck water to drain overboard. The only water that should be draining to your bilge is the lockers. You don't want all that deck water draning in there to much work for your bilge pump.

Actual I don't think the 220 is self bailing like the 240. I thought it was, but after doing some research for one of the BR to Bahamas threads I was wrong. The 220 must sit lower in the water than our 240SDs do.

Richard - Can you confirm this on your 220? Thanks.

Chuck you are correct. All deck drain holes lead to the bilge. The only over board discharge is from the entertainment sink. (Besides the bilge pump discharge). The four total dran holes. Two drain holes are on deck. 2 are vertical holes one at the base of the steps and the 2nd in the corner of the L lounger. Both these holes have divit scuppers in front of the holes which collect dirt and debris on a regular basis. The other two, 1 in the head and a 2nd hidden under the front ski locker door. Water dripping into the seam of the locker door gets collected and passed down into the back of the locker and travels back to the bilge. There has been a long discussion about that issue on another thread.

Interesting to know, the Parts list from Sea Ray 2006 220 Sundeck indicates there is a drain at the engine cowling that drains overboard.

Really??? I can't speak to the 2006, but on the 2005 all drains lead to the bilge. Really not sure about the geometry involved, but from a visual inspection I do not think that you could have a thru-hull fitting at a decent height above the waterline to accomodate draining to the outside of the boat. It sure would be nice though...
