220 DA thread

This is from their site:

A Xantrex inverter/charger is a combination of an inverter, battery charger and transfer switch into one complete system. When AC power is available, the inverter/charger recharges the house batteries. It also allows any surplus AC power to pass through and power downstream AC loads, such as a television set or microwave oven. When AC power is disconnected, the unit inverts DC battery power into AC electricity.

Of couse, this route will probably be more expensive than what you are thinking of doing. The upside is you will have everything, including the fridge, running when you pull from the dock. You can save some money and get a 120v only fridge, instead of a 12v or 12v/120v combination, which is what I have in my boat.

Here's a better link, as the original I posted doesn't seem to be working:

That may be a possibility. I am wondering, I will still need all the shore power components, inlet plug, wireing, distribution panel and outlets. I already have a battery charger so this would eliminate or replace that. Looks like you already had shore power and added the inverter/charger to the existing system. I am thinking this is something to add to a complete shore power system for the added convience of ac power while unpluged and a combo charger that will control the system automaticly. Sounds real simple to add to a system that already is there. I have several smaller inverters, 400 and 150 that i use now and am able to power most anything i used while away from the dock.

Any way you look at it, you have some work to do. Installing the shore power plug and panel won't be too tough, but routing the wiring and figuring it all out will be a challenge. Let us know how it's working out as you go along. I'm sure there are other's here that might be interested in adding shore power to their boats.

this afternoon i tackled 2 things to fix on my boat. I would really like some suggestions.
the boat would not shift into fwd or rev. The throttle only for engine worked fine but the shift cable would not budge. Long story short.. its the rear shift cable going from top of motor to outdrive. I removed the outdrive from the gimbal housing by taking the 6 nuts/washers off and it came right off. Now the real problem. The steering is frozen solid on my boat. I thought it might be the steering cable but after diagnosing.. it is not the steering cable. it is not the power steering assist. It is the upper of the 2 places the gimbal housing pivots to steer. I sprayed the crap out of everything with wd40 and hit the housing left and right with a 2x4 inbetween using a hammer and it would barrrrrrely budge but it did get it to move probably .250" both ways over about an hour of beating it back and forth. I don't know if I should try to remove the whole thing that bolts to the transom of the boat or what. Anyone ever seen anything like this or have any suggestions??

I have a prop question, I am thinking of switching to a stainless prop and wondering what diameter and pitch anyone has used and the results. I have a 260 Mercruiser engine so looking for results with the same set up.
Thanks

Hello Wendy/gang. I also own a 1990 220 DA Sundancer. I just got it this season, and I am loving it to say the least. Nice to meet you all.

I had the exact same boat as you, and I used a Mercury Vengeance 3 blade 14.5x17 for nearly 10 years. Excellent overall performance. 4400 RPMs at WOT, and 40 mph on GPS. Best cruise was 3200 rpm at 27 mph.

Also, welcome KevS. The 220 DA is such a great little cruiser.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like excellant performance, how was you boat loaded when achieving this performance?
I am also thinking of repowering with a Michigan Motorz bronze or silver pack 5.7 or with the GM base 5.7. I see the base engine will bump it to 270HP and the partial engine packs are at 315HP. Has anyone repowered with either of these packages and are you happy with the results?

Du any of you have a heater in the boat?
If so, what kind of heater.
I would like to purchase one, and could use some inspiration.
Maybe specific places to buy.

Hi klopf
I fitted a heater last year best thing I ever did keeps the boat nice and worm and dry.
Mine is a Eberspacher D1LC 12v heater and runs on Diesel you can also get a petrol version.

Have a look on eBay loads of them new and used see the link below.

Hi Isola

Thanks for your reply.

Year, N.Irl. and Denmark are not the warmest spots on earth, and a heater would be nice. If I find a heater that neads 24V, would it then be possible to use it in my 12V setup?

LOL! :lol:Yes klopf it begins to get a bit colder around here this time of the year and a heater will mean that ya can keep your boat in service for a lot longer.

As for 12v to 24v it can be done by using your two 12v batteries in series or you can get a power converter (transformer) but these tend to have a low amp output and this type of heater will need a lot of power on start up.

I am gassing your thinking of getting a heater out of a 24v truck cab, I had thought the same and in the end was I lucky to find a very lightly used 12v heater out of telephone engineers van.

I will attach a diagram to help explain how to link batteries up in series but be careful, if you get this wrong you could do a lot of damage to your boats wiring so get some help from an electrical expert.

I am no electrician by any stretch of the imagination.

ISOLA

Parallel means connect the batteries pos + to Pos+ Neg - to neg -With two 12V batteries in parallel you get 12V.

Series means pos + of battery 2 to neg - of battery 1. With two 12V batteries in series you get 24V from the pos + of battery 1 and the neg - of battery 2.

Repower Mich Motorz Silver 5.7 315HP

Just finished the repower with the Michigan Motorz Silver package 5.7 315 horse gm new base engine. I just finished the break in period and couldn't be happier. I also replaced the prop with a Michigan Wheel 14.5X18 4 blade. The boat now gets on plane effortlessly loaded or not. Cruises at 2800 rpm and 21.6 mph on the gps. Wouldn't hardly stay on plane at 2800 before. I have almost 10 hours on the new motor and still runing on the same tank of gas, its still just below 1/2. What a total differance from the 260 original engine. I would recomend this to anyone who is considering a repower.:smt038

Pretty sweet setup. I'd bet you have a Holley carb on their too. I'll keep Mich. Motorz in mind if I should ever require a re-repower....

Oops, just noticed the Edelbrock is the carb, not the intake manifold. Didn't know they made carbs. Looks great!

Collector21: Congratulations. It looks like a nice repower. I considered Michigan Motorz, but I couldn't find a mechanic who would install it. They will only do the job if they sell the engine aswell. To bad. I have repowered with a new Mercruiser 5.0 MPI, new transom and new sterndrive. The new setup has not yet been tested. Pics will be uploadet later.

Just had it out yesterday, did first maint after break in. I did most of the work myself with a little help from a tech at the local Chev dealer I used to work at. They were kind enough to let me use a bay in their truck shop for a Sat to use the elect hoist to lift the old motor and drop in the new one. Made the job much easier. Did all the prep and after work at home in the driveway. Sure glad I still have a nice set of tools and a air compressor.

Hello. Just joined this site. I have read every post I think in this thread. My family and I just purchased a 1989 Sea Ray 220da with a 5.7 litre and SEI? outdrive. We are excited for the spring! I am interested in modifications to the rear bench seat as well as the helm seat. Also am in need of a canvas top and camper enclosure. Will be contacting local canvas people to give me the damage! Anyway, if any can give us insight on the best way to arrange the cockpit to add comfortable seating but still leave it adaptable to fishing and towing watertoys would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Aquaddict and welcome. have a good serch of the threads as I have seen some nice modifications of the rear bench on the 220da. also found this thread on a serch try the link below. hope this helps
