220 DA thread

Thanks, looking forward to seeing those photos. 15' of chain sounds great. I usually anchor in a crowded cove at the lake, so a lot of chain is key. Are you limited as to the anchor weight?

Funny, I installed the deck hatch to have access to the anchor locker. If I install the windlass, the hatch will now complicate installation. Not impossible, but harder than it would have been.

I bought the rode already made up from Defender. I forget where I puchased the bow roller. Went thru a few before I found the one that would work.

I'm in the tidal part of the Housy, out on LI Sound quite a bit also, the anchor holds well.

I know these can be finicky if not using the correct rode. Lewmar sells the matching rode, but I'm sure it will me more $$$, as compared to Defender. This project needs to be done while the boat is on my driveway, not in the water, so I'll have to decide in the next couple of weeks, or wait till next year. My right arm is giving me trouble (downside of being 60!!) and it may prove to be a problem without a windlass this year. The wife says she can do the anchoring, but she hasn't lifted it yet, so that's highly doubtful.

Well, I can tell you that its doesn't work 100%... there are times that it does jam or kink.

The rode I got from defender is the medium lay anchor line. Its not the softer line that others sell. I made the mistake and tried the cheaper line... FAIL! LOL

If you are near the Shelton area, you can stop and take a look for yourself.

The closest I'll get to Shelton is Wilton, on the 27th. Not close enough to Shelton though.

As far as the roller, what size do you wind up with, and if available the exact model... thanks...

Exact model eh? You don't want to guess??? LOL I have it saved on my work PC, I'll post it in the am.

Here is a situation similar to mine, where there is an existing hatch. Complicates the installation, but I like the fact that there is access to the rode while it's filling the locker. Also nice to be able to get in there to quickly clear jams. Skip to 9:20 to see the hatch.

As far as powering the windlass, how did you route the 12v line in the 220? Starboard behind the head, or port behind the galley? I know it can't be easy either way.

Sorry, didn't get any good pics. I need to use a camera and not my phone. I'll have to watch the vid at home, tube is blocked here at work.

I ran the power behind the head. It was actually very easy to run. The worst part of the install was hooking up the wiring itself. Big wires in tight spaces.

Hey, I thought you forgot about me! No problem on the pics, it's pretty easy to visualize what needs to be done. The big question is on the roller, and what type anchor it's made for. I have a 13lb. Danforth type (brand new) and would like to utilize that. I see 20" rollers on eBay for not much money, which actually is 15.5 inches from roller to back of frame. Is that possibly what you used? There is very little space at the bow for a good sized roller.

I used this roller. It has to go as far forward as possible. Yes the danforth 13 is fine for this.

I think that might be about the same dimensions as the one I'm looking at on eBay. Is the hinge required on this installation, or do you think a standard roller of the same size might work? Looking to get away as cheap as possible!

If I recall, the hinged one is the only one with a bolt footprint that would work. The others I tried I could not get far enough forward. Also, the tips of the anchor are less than a 1/4" from touching the bow. It is really close and tight. I think it is 23" overall in length.

Ah yes, I can see where there is very little room to play with. Mine is even more complicated, since I added the large anchor hatch. OK, I'll mull it over in my head, and see if I want to take the plunge. At worst, I can install the windlass at home, and finish the installation after it hits the water. I'll post if and when I finish the project.

I was just looking at your weblink... I think you are stuck with the hatch. My windlass is all the way back and the bow roller is just a few inches in front of the windlass. The hatch appears to be in the way of installing the roller.

I hear you. There is very little area for a good solid attachment at the bow for the roller. I had planned on adding an extra support, from slanted area just above the rub rail. Might be OK for the lake, but not anything that can be used with a heavier anchor and in open water. I'm going to try and get in touch with Lewmar, and see what they recommend. As far as mounting the windlass, I was going to leave the hatch as is, and add two tubular steel supports that bolt to the deck, and using nuts on either side work it so it's a solid install. I think that should work, but the roller seems to be the bigger problem.

Well... you do have room to make your own pulpit. If you use that starboard that you used for the swim platform and add a support underneath, it just might work!

View attachment 18533Yes, I thought of that also. I'd like to avoid that if possible, but if I had trouble going the other route I can always add the pulpit. I'd like to avoid it, as it's getting pretty busy in the bow area, and will start to look like a real amateur installation.

I just spoke to a Lewmar service tech in FL and his main concern was the free-fall height. I can get aways with about 125ft. of rode, so I'm hoping that will help. You said you get jams, but not enough to keep you from using it. I'll also make a small circular hatch (on my present hatch) so I can reach in to untangle the jam.

This is a photo I found on the Net, and it looks like the roller here was fastened to a very small area. I guess it works. I would actually add that brace from the slanted area above the rub-rail. One nice roller I'm looking at is 4" wide. Is that too wide? I see what you have it 2 1/2" wide.

No, its 4" wide.

The jams I was having was due to the rode. I tried to get away with using a cheaper line. You need a medium lay line for the rode. And I have 15' of chain and 150' of rope and it all fits fine.

After checking all the items (including foot controls) and tallying up the prices, I decided to do it in stages. I ordered a bow roller, and two new nav lights, so I'll start with that. I'll see how it works out, hauling by hand, but having the benefit of the roller. I'll utilize my custom anchor locker hatch, and can even pull up the anchor while sitting. If I decide to do the complete installation, I will at least have the roller and the new lighting done. With a son graduating from college next month, the extra $$ I won't be spending will come in handy when I have to pluck down the $$$ for the new car we promised him...... OUCH!!!!!
