The stainless steel insulated carafe is great and you will still have hot coffee after a few hours.

The design has a fault though, but it can be easily modified .

The plastic pipe that goes from the heater up to the top of the carafe may be bent. If so the water flow will be blocked and the safety thermal fuse of the heater will blow!!!
The modification is easy. You just have to bend the pipe into a smoother curve.
That’s what happened on mine after only a few coffees...I do not know if it was due to bad design or a bad assemblage... now is working perfectly!!!

Jerry....you tease...I respond :grin::grin::grin:

Pietro,

I'm having my cockpit upholstery replaced this winter, after seeing how nice yours turned out.

In your pictures, I noticed the "Sea Ray" logo on the rear bench seat backrest is offset to the port side a bit. I assume this is the center of the TOTAL width of the backrest? Are you happy with that placement?

I was thinking that centering the logo on the center of the middle cushion might look OK too, but thought you might have some advice to share.

Yes, the logo was placed in the middle of the backrest and I like it.

Also putting it right in the middle of the center cushion makes sense… the backrest and the bench are rather apart so I do not think it will make a big difference. I wouldn’t really know what to suggest to you…

Keep us posted on your winter project :wink:

Pietro, if we come to Italy this summer, can we borrow your boat for say.......oh, a month? Of course, we would expect it to be stocked with champagne. You wouldn't mind doing us this little favor, would you? :smt001

Sure...but you'll need a captain on these unknown waters...so here I am!!! :grin::grin::grin:

Thanks for the quick response. I think I'll just flip a coin to decide.

If all goes as planned, I SHOULD be able to post pics. of the install by the end of March. The company doing the work came recommended by another CSR member, so nothing can possibly go wrong, right?:grin: They assured me I will be able to make the "Solomons Island Annual Tiki Bar Opening" in mid April. We shall see.

What did u use for engraving the writing on the alum dash? Also do they light up at night?

Writing is transparent adhesive, so no light... I'm currently working on trying to modify it and get back light writings :wink:

Someone asked about the tab/sponson I added to the transom of my 390, so I’m sharing the info with you all hoping it might be of help.

This is the sponson. I measured it again today but I had no goniometer with me so I cannot be precise about the angle, but you can see it in the pic, I would say some 5°

This is the new battery box. It’s made out of marine plywood and holds 6 batteries plus one just for the generator:

Nice work on the battery box. Is it made of glass covered plywood?

What is the purpose of the sponson? I see you also have adjustable trim tabs - are they not effective?

In the photo it looks like your bolts are rusting. Did you use stainless bolts on the transom?

Ciao Al, nice to see you again on the board!
The standard trim tabs are enough, yes, but the sponson helps a lot in coming out of the hole and the boat travels more level even in rough sea. I use now the adjustable tabs mainly for correcting left-right bias.
The box is glass covered plywood, yes.
The bolts are stainless steel for sure...but they rust somehow. Same with the bolts on the platform, some rust and some do not rust at all! :huh:

Pietro, that happened to my platform and support bolts as well. I bought 316 SS, but some have rusted and some not. One season, and look like crap! Dont know whats up with that? By the way......I looked at the photos of your restoration, and am quite impressed ! Glad to see I'm not the only one affected by compulsive old sea ray restoration disease. Gotta love these old girls.

Pietro:

As you know I have been living in the bilge of my boat lately. I finished rebuilding both CAT's. Readers of this there can see the engines on my web site. I just finished removing the rudders. They were completely seized in the logs. I bolted a 5 foot long 2x4 to the rudders and could move them 5 to 10 degrees. I attached a chain and hydraulic jack to the rudder to pull down on it. After about an hour of wiggling back and forth the rudder came free! I am too old to be doing this! Then I had to do the other rudder. I will make posts in my restoration thread soon to keep everyone updated.

Bolts: Replace your 18-8 bolts with 316 Stainless. They are much better for below the water line. More expensive but better and SAFER!

Now I will have to make a sponson! You drive me wild!!

For what it's worth, sponsons are typically added to the sides of the hull for stability, not the rear. I would say the device you fabricated is more of a 'fixed trim tab' if anything else. Whatever you want to call it though, I like it!

Doug

Finally, after almost one year I have found the right door for the bins I built into the side of the cockpit. Perfect place for my friends' shoes as they step on board! :grin:
