I must be crazy...instead of trading in and getting one nice 455DA or a similar boat, I have just decided to complete overhaul my 1990 390 EC.
First I had to check if the hull was still in good condition. I had to open up the floor to get rid of all the foam that was soaked up with some 80 gallon of water coming form the shower and a punctured tank.

Beside the rotten foam, the situation was not too bad. Furniture are fine and water only seeped in the central and port compartment. No water from the addictional tank I installed under the stateroom bed.
Also considering that my CATs only have some 150 hr I decided to go on....

The situation is now the one you can see in my pics. We opened up the whole floor and got rid of all the foam. I have now so many more underfloor bins to store wathever I want! I will cover the floor in wood and you can see that we are now creating the lids.

Head (I will now place the shower sump underneath the head's floor and not the passageway)

I hope it could be useful for anybody venturing in a restoration project and I hope to get some suggestion and comments from you all!

That' s all for today...ciao!!!

I'm modifying the old wood floor with the new openings. I put it some 8 years ago replacing the carpet.
Now it can be grinded (I hope it's the right word!) again and it should look as new then.
It looks like teak and holly, but I do not know exactly what it is made of, but it comes in large boards and it is about 1/4" thick. I'll ask the boatyard

Nice floor.
I'm confused, tho- you say you put the wood floor in 8 years ago, but it's not there in the first picture? Were you somehow able to remove it and then put it back in?

Yours is a later model, but if your forward air conditioner is located under the berth in the guest stateroom, and condensate drains to the shower sump as mine does- be sure to check that moving the sump is possible. Short of drilling the stringer to feed the condensate line through, there's no way on mine to get it over the other side.

Good luck with the project. Are you replacing the aluminum water tank with poly?

I'm confused as well. You said you removed much of the foam and now have more under floor storage. Isn't that foam there for a reason?

Mike, when I first removed the carpet was because the aluminum tank was punctured (actually 1000 little pinholes underneath). So I replaced it with a stainless steel one that is still in perfect condition. Then I placed the wood floor but it was never glued on. I just painted the original floor and put the wood without fixing it because I knew some water seeped underneath the compartment where the tank lays. This meant that sooner or later I had to cut through the floor...
I cut a hole to pump the water out (you can see it in the first photo just in front of the tank) ....but it was not enough...then the shower drain started to leak... so I took the plunge and opened up everything.

Now I will glue the wood floor because I have complete access to the internal side of the hull and any possible leakage can be detected now!

Yes the air conditioning unit is under the guest berth, but there is already a hole in the stringer where the original shower drain duct was passing. I will use that hole for the condensation hose. no need to make new holes in the stringer.

Norcal...I have been asking around a lot and read carefully Pascoe's site...why there was foam???? I do not know!! But why there is foam where the table is and not under the galley where there's a bin under the floor????
Noise reduction?? :huh:I can tell you that I have seen this technique only on American boats...that, by the way still have the best fiberglass ever!!!

Pietro, I would like to know the name of your wood floor. Also if you make new "fronts" for your drawers and doors that would look good...Ric

For the wood, please wait a few days when I'll go back to the yard and ask the carpender who's doing the job. Just remember it was bought here in Italy, but I guess you'll find something similar in the USA.

Doors and drawers...I actually don't know yet.. I basically like them..... anyway, have you got any idea???

Great job!!! Keep the pics coming...............

They'll be coming...just after this holiday season when the yard will re-open. Today I have decided to go with Flexiteek in the cockpit and to use the new Sunbrella fabric for the cushions, no more vinyl!

Careful with the Flexiteek- I'm assuming that the sun at your latitude doesn't get nearly as hot as Florida, but here it's said you can't walk on the stuff (bare feet) in the summer so it's not vey popular. Just something to be aware of...

Now, I must admit that I have never heard of using Sunbrella in place of the traditional vinyl before. Have you ever seen this installed or is this just a new idea that you came up with? My vinyl is in excellent condition, but I am always open to new ideas. We have vinyl down in the salon and I am not happy with it so please keep me posted Pietro.

Merry Christmas from Canada. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Mike, I know the issues with flexiteek as I have been reading all the posts about it...but I always keep my canvas on the cockpit, so hopefully it won't get so hot!! I will not put it on the swim platform for sure!

I am just tired of the carpet always collecting tons of crumbles and hair...and I had to change it every 2-3 years because the back of it got brittle...

Electrical, I was browsing through the Sunbrella catalog the other day and I discovered they make special canvas for outdoor marine environment. They are really nice and I would also like to make something original...or weird...you will tell!:grin::grin:

Merry Christmas to you all :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I would think twice about the sunbrella for cockpit or interior seats. Although it looks nice, it's not something you would want to sit or sleep on full time. It's rough and it's not comfortable on your skin. For accent pillows, I think it's a great place. For full time seats, not so much.

I have to disagree with douglee about sunbrella for interior seats or exterior seats. I have it on my cockpit seating and its great. I used sunbrella that is made for seats, cushions, etc. It is much softer than what is used for tops, It also dosen't get hot like dark vinyl. Just my opinion.

Tiara builds a few boats with Sunbrella seats in the cockpits. I've seen it mostly on the Sovran series boats which are designed for cruising. It actually looks great and is comfortable. I don't think I would order it, but it is really a matter of taste. The boats I have seen with it look very rich and well done.
