I can honestly say I only know 1 person/friend that I would trust my boat to anytime; anywhere; no questions asked. And, I doubt that he would ever ask.

I have a few friends I would trust my boat with. I would also trust my life with them. All but 1 have their own boat, and the other is a master captain that runs police boats.

I agree too, that there is only one person, other than myself, that I trust to operate my 340, and it's not the admiral. My slip neighbor, brother from another mother, is the only person I would trust Destiny to.

What about your head on board?

We thought the question was rentng for payment to strangers. Our son is probably better at maneuvering her than we are:)

I would trust my boat with most of you guys... I would not take money... I would check with my insurance first... A boat is just a thing, and things can be fixed or replaced... You guys would have to pay for the gas... I remember a bumper sticker about gas, and no rides for free...

How does this differ from a charter? The charter companies in the San Juan Islands don't own the boats they charter out. They belong to private owners that offer them for part of the year to the charter companies. I chartered in the San Juans a few years ago and had to take a written test showing my knowledge of paper chart navigation among other things. I then had to take the charter captain out for a ride to demonstrate my ability to handle the boat. I had to leave the slip, go out in the bay and do some maneuvering for him and bring it back to a slip as well as show I could tie it along side a dock. I also had to demonstrate that I understood all the systems. That said, I don't think I could comfortably offer my boat up to a charter company. We paid $3500 for a week in a 40' Bayslimer erh....Bayliner. Had to be about the worst handling boat I have ever been on.

I'm going to throw this out there for discussion to stir things up! On one hand I would think long and hard before I would rent out my 32' Lake Erie cruiser. On the other hand as a Florida snowbird I would love to be able to rent a small CC to fish Charlotte Harbor in the winter. I have over 50 years of boating experience, a member of the US Power Squadron who has taken most of their advanced courses, and I'm a certified vessel examiner. Boating is a passion, and I take boating safety very seriously. Seems like there would be a solution out there somewhere, short of the Freedom Boat Club.

I do rent my boat to strangers! After they are vetted by Boatbound and I interview them as well. I was a nervous wreck before the first few rentals… as anyone would be. Smooth sailing with Boatbound.. they get a deposit.. ( you set the amount) they get CC info from renter and pay you within 48 hours of the rental. You make all decisions… how much, when, how long, deposit, etc… Even if you approve a renter and change your mind once you meet them its your prerogative. I actually have a friend who just purchased a boat specifically for Boatbound rentals. I will be managing the boat for her. I would definitely recommend Boatbound….

Here's a twist on boat rental. Saw what we think (from a distance) on Saturday eve was a 40'+ Sundancer with a big sign attached to both sides of the bow railings with the words: "Private charter call: (insert phone #)" .
It was obviously taking several folk out for a sunset cruise. Our first thought was the obvious insurance question..............

Count me in the NO side! I've driven a lot if car rentals and saw the damage, I could only imagine what would become I'd my boat!

My favorite is to see the sea rays from care free boat club with the scratches down the sides and the gouges in the fiberglass. I went out on a 240 sun deck with a friend who was a member and it was borderline trashed. Best part was when it was sunset and we went to put up the stern light and it was missing. On cue the DC harbor patrol stopped us in Washington channel for no light. We explained the situation and he complemented us on our improvised flashlight stern light. He proceeded to escort us back to the gangplank marina where he ripped a new a hole into the poor 18 year old who was on duty at care free. He was real nice to us though.
