Hmmmm...
rental boat...like a rental car ???
"Sir ..would you like the optional insurance ?? "
" hell yes I would !!! "

We have freedom boat club down here. Many of their boats have visible scuffs and cosmetic damage. A friend was a member and the boats were usually fine but once my buddies were coming in late and the nav lights were broken. They were escorted by DC harbor patrol back to the marina where the officer gave it to the kid who sent the boat out without working equipment. Rental boats are almost always operated by inexperienced captains who drink too much. I could see how you could charter the boat and maintain control but to rent no way.

If it was not for the ability to rent, I would have never learned to fly a plane. I know there is a huge difference between planes and boats. As we all can understand, planes don't float and boats don't fly (insert story here). To me the difference, in short, is clientele. There is a 'pucker' factor when flying or more to the point, landing. Landing is not a 'I can wing this' situation. Boat renters don't want to, or expect to do, preflights and run ups. They have family in tow and you (owner) are only in the way of their fun and good times. They will figure out docking and pilot-age as they go. Is there enough space for the cooler?

No way in hell would I handover my boat in an attempt to recoup some costs unless it was specifically my business.

No Way.

A friend of mine was in a boat club for a year. The boats were owned by private people and managed by the club. Most of the people using them either didn't give a sh.... or more to the point were inexperienced.
The boat he had his contract in, basically had one leg stuck half way up, plus multiple other issues, took me a while to work out why he was going through $500 worth of fuel every time he took it out, for a trip that I would have $100 -$150. And even my friend only knew one way to drive it, throttles as far rorward as they would go!

I suppose I might be willing to rent out a fleet of Boston Whalers......Could be a lucrative business perhaps, but they wouldn't be my boats, they would have to be lease backs.

That would be the only type of boat to rent you could really make sense of. That or maybe aluminum boats. The risk of renting a luxury performance bow rider or cruiser wouldn't be acceptable. Even if only experienced captains rented and payed a premium price or monthly dues the margin would be too slim to make money. Not saying it hasn't been done successfully but even as a labor of love it would be a tough business.
