I want to be able to use my Laptop at the boat, docked as well as running.

What are you using to connect to the WWW on the boat?

AllTel EVDO aircard. Best I ever got was about 700kpbs. I check the speed at CNET often.

EVDO by us is still on its first generation. Its about low DSL speeds.

I hope in time we will have faster speeds so I can go away from paying for EVDO and Road Runner.

WiFi available at the marine but it's terribly unreliable and SLOW as First Born with sails:grin:, Usually we use my wife's AT&T direct connect card.... reliable and OK performance

Comcast wireless in the house reaches the dock with very good signal. Use a repeater on the boat.

Verizon built in EVDO connection via my laptop. Whats great is that I can broadcast my Radio 365 stations via the Mobile Blackbox to neighboors, or Itunes lists, etc.

4 bars at the slip. Works great.

Can you elaborate? Verizon service is $60/month here. Is your service w/ Verizon?
I tether as well on Verizon with my Samsung Windows Mobile 6.1 phone. Pay $40 a month unlimited data and $9 a month to tether. They no longer offer the unlimited plan though.

For $15.00 a month (on top of the data plan) most blackberrys can act as a broadband modem. USB to the laptop, couple of clicks, surfing away. If you carry a blackberry, it's the way to go.

Motorola V9 cell phone tethered via Bluetooth to either a Palm T3, Macbook, or the crappy IBM notebook I have to use for work. All use the same connection (one at a time) and share the same unlimited data plan. Using AT&T's 3G network, get between 800 and 1,200 Kbps on downloads. Good enough.

Best regards,
Frank

Does the USB connection also keep the phone charged as you use it as a modem? what about answering or making a call while connected?

I pay about $60 per month for unlimited EVDO broadband access from VZW. Works great as it is built into my laptop.

seems there may be a cheaper way though using my phone as modem.

I just use my windows based phone to surf the web. It has the office suite and a full key board. It works fine for me on the boat. I try to do as little work as possible when on the boat and the phone is enough of a web access tool for me.

My wife has a blackberry but her web browsing abilty is slow a quirky compared to the wndows based phone.
