Several years ago I had a Magnum Desert Eagle XIX. I put about ten rounds through it at the Police Hall of Fame range down the road from me and then sold it. It had a muzzle break which I swear didn't do squat but blow flames twelve inches from the sides. I miss it but don't miss it... I think you could miss the target by 5 feet and still take it out with the shock wave....

It is in SD. My 1st Deer hunt was with a .223. I shot two doe. One well placed shot and it dropped about 100 yds away. The other sort of well place shot, wounded the 2nd and stopped about 150 yds away. Had to cut its throat with a knife. That was an awful 1st experience which kept me up at night. I’ve since been using my 6.8spc which is a .270 bullet.

I was used to that kind of stuff when I was a kid. We used buy Herefords for beef. We'd grain them, then butcher. One shot in the head with 22lr, drop like a sack of potatoes. Skin them, quarter them with a chainsaw and off to the butcher.

Yikes.... closest I got was cutting heads off chickens when I was a kid...threw them under a tub...some got away and ran around like a chicken with its head cut off .....my mom would clean and pluck them ...very strange thing to have a 10yr old do...

You meant cannon...My neighbor bought a 50 cal pistol, fired about 8 shots into the dirt, and sold it because the rounds were too damn expensive. He was nowhere near the target, and only about 10 yards away! That day was a hoot. He was "pissed" as I fired round after round of my Kimber 1911 into the bullseye.

That's a handful for sure. I bought a SA Ruger 10.5' barrel, 44mag with the idea of trying silhouette shooting. I never did it, not sure why looking back but shot alot of paper instead. I did hunt deer with it a few times, quit doing that when the buck of a life time was a little to far away for my skill level. He'd be hanging on the wall if I had my rifle.

Times have changed for sure. Most folks are pretty isolated from what it takes to have food...just go to the store and take it off the shelf.

I love my pre 64 model 94 30/30, but so different than my other firearms. I'd cry if I dropped my 30/30. Most of my ARs I build for beating up.

My deer rifle is stainless and synthetic. It works. It is accurate.
They are utilitarian and just have no “soul”.

Now, on the other hand, my M1 Garands and my Browning O/U are works of art in addition to functionality.

Is this offered in defense, to be comforting?....OK it's less lethal than a cannon.

I'm pretty sure .223 is legal for 'big game' in the majority of states, deer and in some states bear and elk.

I do not believe so. In Indiana .243 is the minimum. Just pointing out it is not some mammoth gun like so many believe. .223 is just slightly bigger than the .22 rifle though longer.
