What’s an assault weapon?

Assault weapon is a term from politics it didnt exist before around 1990-94

It is a generic reference loosely based on “assault rifle” which comes from the descriptions of the AK-47 by the Army around 1967.

And that reference came from the German WW2 name of the “Sturmgewehr Vierundvierzig," or the Storm Rifle 44 (see stg-44)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/StG_44

This WW2 weapon features that get lumped into the PC term:
Shorter carbine length barrel
Fully auto
Semi auto
30 rd magazine
Rudimentary flash suppressor
Pistol grip

So no infringement is a free for all of weaponry?

Lines are drawn but nobody’s concerned that you’re not allowed to have a bazooka, right?

Don’t misunderstand, I’m a gun owner and sport shooter, but too many of the wrong people have too many guns. Often the wrong type of guns too.

Useless for hunting anything except humans.

Not really needed in the hands of ordinary citizens.

A source of fascination for often odd and worrisome people.

Apparently too easy for crackpots to obtain.
There are those that collect for interest and historical reasons then those that use, care, and restore as a hobby. Ones that condemn another's legitimate interests are odd and worrisome; wouldn't you agree?
But, yes we are in the age of the fringe establishing right and wrong.

Key word being “crackpot”
Most hunting rifles are much larger caliber and deadlier than an AR15 and yes you can hunt deer, boar, coyote (all of which I have on my SC property)
A man in the US recently attacked four women with a sword but that didn't get much coverage.
Britain has started a focus on knives and machetes as they are the new weapon of choice for criminals.

the OP asked the definition but knew this was going to be bait

Point taken if a bit spun.

You can’t deny that many “collectors” are a bit extreme in their “interests” though.

To your point, I’d love a full auto WWII era Thompson but I’m fine with the fact that it’s a no no.

There are over 22,000 gun laws in effect right now. Criminals don’t follow the law. More laws won’t stop the criminals from obtaining firearms.

All more laws will do is restrict peaceful law abiding Americans from exercising their rights under the constitution.

Its only bait if the fish bite and set the hook;)

Agreed. Many years ago I bought an HK in .308 figuring it would be a great hunting rifle and tough as nails. Not some gleaming Weatherby I’d be afraid to scratch.

I didn’t develop an interest in hunting and sold it.

I will shoot as many woodchucks as I can though.

"Not really needed in the hands of ordinary citizens" Oh the irony! The exact reason the 2nd amendment exists is to protect the rights of ordinary citizens from those who would tell us we can't have them.

See now thats really the point you as a good law abiding citizen can pay the license fee get checked and own that Thompson without much problem. The law restricts who but does not what.
I could legally obtain a bazooka, RPG or a .50 cal Browning if I’m willing to pay and wait.

We accept those restrictions because such weapons are inherently indiscriminate.

Explosive charges throw shrapnel 100 yards in all directions. A 50 Cal will go right thru light armor and anything less for 1000+ yards.

I agree - no more laws. Keep your "rights". Keep buying guns and killing people. Don't get vaccinated either. It's helping solve the planet's #1 issue: not guns, not Covid, not global warming but overpopulation.

Again a good set of points but most of the school shooters and the like buy their guns legally while their often known mental issues slip through the cracks.

That, the gun show loopholes and cash and carry gun shops in states where that’s the norm have made it too easy for them to act on their crazy ideas.

I own:

20 G. Pump for home defense.

12 G. Over/Under for trap & skeet.

.22 semi auto for pest control.

I recently inherited a few handguns and am applying for a license but would otherwise not have done so.

I’m just shy of 60 and have managed to keep my meager collection in line with my needs.

Like other tools, I see no need to collect them unless I’ll use them.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated that approximately 5 million to 10 million AR-15 style rifles exist in the U.S.. Some estimates suggest around 1 million AR style long guns are manufactured every year in the USA. The term AR was not originally an acronym for assault rife (although it's fair to say it is now); it comes from the original manufacture of that design of weapon first produced by ArmaLite, a division of the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation 'the ArmaLite Rifle or AR'. Colt now retains the trademark and is the exclusive owner of the AR-15 designation. I dare say it's too late now. The horse left the barn decades ago —remember Bonanza? It left around then. To quote Chris Rock 'You don’t need no gun control. You know what you need? We need some bullet control. We need to control the bullets. That’s right. I think all bullets should cost $5,000. $5,000 for a bullet. You know why? Because if a bullet cost $5,000, there’d be no more innocent bystanders. That’d be it. Everytime somebody gets shot, you’d be like ‘Damn, he must have did something. Sh*t, they put $50,000 worth of bullets in his ass!’

I remember in my 6th grade social studies book there was a picture of a billboard that read 'if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns'.

Here is another one for you. Drunk driving is a problem and sober drivers are killed by them all the time. Here is the fix...don't let sober people drive anymore. Think about that one.

We have enough guns laws. We just need to start enforcing the ones we have. I'm ok with background checks and would be ok if they required a training course completion before buying a firearm but most of the laws they want to pass have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Bless your heart.
