Wakeboarding threag

sorry if this was discussed already, but i have neither the time or patience to read through eleven pages of comments. Maybe we need a Water Sports Forum. Anyway, i have only been wakeboarding a short time but have really gotten hooked. My wife and 12 year old love it too. My question is this... are my 5 and 8 year olds ready??? What age did you start your kids out? I have ordered an O'brien Funboard that they can learn on. This is like an oversized boogey board that is pulled by the boat that they can stand up on and not have to hold the rope. THOUGHTS?

Hi! They will not make a watersports section I dont believe as most of the boaters just cruise. Thus why I started a wakeboarding thread, though I SHOULD have named it watersports.

Anyway, the 5 year old is ready if he/she can swim well without a life vest. THAT'S the important part, as you must think of the "what if's" the life jacket comes off somehow, someway. Same with the 8 year old.

That being said, the funboard is a great way to get comfortable with being on the water. I would get the 5 year old on it for the rest of the year and next, but the 8 year old, really, is ready for a wakeboard if you want to go that route, if they have the desire. If not, drop them on the funboard as well until ready.

Get "the book" series of wakeboard videos to learn proper form, or you will really keep yourselves back from advancing. Especially toe side. It is second to none in the sport for learning.

Other than that, have fun! Post up some pics and vids one day. Maybe we can help improve/help with your riding as well.

Had an awesome weekend boarding and hanging out. ( I know its weds, but had pics at home).

Saturday morning, my wife and I went out at 10 am and boarded until around 1 with our spotter, Ginger. Her pic is below. She is great. No complaining about music, drinks, wind or anything. So we couldnt get any actual boarding pics or vids :-(

My wife did awesome, and made some good one wake jumps. She is improving steadily, and looks so smooth now on the board.

I did well, and really worked my switch riding. I got up switch instead of regular, and practiced switch hs w2w, switch ts w2w, and all of the 180's. I started working on the bs 180's too, which are the hard ones. Landed a couple of times without the rope though. When I did it with the rope I got yanked down as i am not rotating properly. It will come.

Then at around 130, we picked my bro up at the dock, followed 30 min later by my wife's bf and her fiancee. Then we rafted up with Matt (slacker) and his wife and guests, and Jerry and Chrissy with their boat and friends. Later, my neighbor Al and his wife rafted up in their master craft. The pic below is just the 3 boats before Al showed up.

Great day...

We took a family vacation on Winnipesaukee a couple of weeks ago, and had an awesome time.

My wife and I got to wakeboard a few times, and my 9 year old daughter loves to videotape (we have 3 hours of vid from vacation!) so I have mine done, and my wife's is to come.

So...here is a couple of runs. I was mostly just practicing some 180's and switch riding. The conditions were so/so as that lake doesnt really ever get flat unless you go out at 6 am, which was not going to happen.

Uhhh, Bill? Your tow rope has a really big knot in it. Just sayin'...

Nice video. That lake looked empty...ah no boats I mean.

lol...the knot is for newer riders as it is 10' less making w2w jumps easier.

That was the great thing about going out during the week. It was more or less empty. The weekend was nuts. Like being out on an ocean!

Here is my wife's video.

She is definitely getting better since last year. She is still afraid of trying to go W2W, but is getting braver.

We have plans to go out, just the two of us tomorrow. It will be a day we both strive to improve our riding.

Bringing "The Book" out with us on the laptop, and will be doing drills in the morning, then just having fun in the afternoon.

My '07 Byerly Legacy de-laminated, and I wrote to HO sports. They told me to take pics of the de-lamination (which was pretty bad) and send it to the dealer I bought it from.

I did, and the dealer (local board shop: Inland Water Sports, Brookfield CT...please use them if you are around the area at all! Owner is JD) sent them in. Heard back last week that they will replace the board at no charge.

Great!

Well, the board is in!! My buddy Matt ("Slacker" on this site) is picking it up for me since he works nearby (Thanks Matt!)

I am stoked! Cant wait to ride it, supposed to be an awesome board! They sent an '09 model, and even let me keep the old board.

Nice vids Jerry! Wakeboard season is just around the corner!!! I'm ready to be on the water.

Did you get to try that new Byerly out last season Bill?

Same here...dry suit is out of its bag and in the boat! Going to get new bindings as soon as the local shop has my size. All he had were 11-12's, I need a 13-14 for my stupid clumsy feet.

Yes, rode that Byerly last year at the end of the season, was AWESOME. It has great snap and recovery and a great launch off the wakes. A little slippery at first as my last board had deeper molded fins, but got used to it. I didnt get to fully take advantage of it, as my bindings were literally shot. Velcro no longer held and the rubber was torn a bit, so I was tentative to go all out and break an ankle or worse.

Im ready for this year! Actually started my exercise routine Monday, and this weekend (depending on the gloomy rainy forecast!) Im putting the trampoline back up. Got a new Ronix rope and handle as well.

You ready? Anything new this year or psyche story?

Bill did you get a rope with removeable sections? It pained me to see the knot in your rope.

Just got a new HO board at the boat show (retail $399, boat show price $229). 55", it will even get my fat a$$ up. Can't wait to try it as I have never boarded before. My 13 yo son will have to give me pointers.

lol...the old rope always had removable sections. That knot was for beginner friends to learn wake to wake. We are keeping that on the boat for noobs.

Awesome! Im glad you are going to give it a go. If you google or youtube, there are lots of vids to help you get going. If you get just a bit more serious, or if you have a few $'s to spare now, skip the free youtube stuff: the BEST place to learn this is at Learnwake.com
It's only a few $'s for a membership, but this is the BEST site to learn from. It is by the guys who wrote "The Book" series of instructional, and it has so many vids even for complete beginners. Broken down frame by frame vids and technical points that REALLY make the difference. As well, you can post up Q's ont he discussion board, and real coaches from the wakeboard camp will answer, so you are getting straight facts, not hype or bs.

As well, and this is the really cool part to me, if you post a vid up of yourself, the coaches will watch it and tell you how to improve!

Either way, even if just for complete goofing off and you dont give a crap about actually "learning", its awesome youre going to give it a shot. Once you learn to carve and jump wakes, youll want to keep going, its a lot of fun!

Good luck, lets see some pics and vids eventually!

hate to bring up a thread, but had to. Have any of you guys modified your boats more than towers? Like fats sacks and new blades? I just tried water skiing today and my boat has a wierd struggle getting people up, i think it might be the skill level. So is it harder for a boat to pull up a wakeboarder or water skier?

I have not modified more than tower so far. I have used sacks on other boats and they are helpful to make bigger wakes.

As for your question about skier v. wakeboarder...I think they both have a fair amount of drag coming up for the first couple seconds but once up its no different. You dont specify all your conditions in your post but I have the same engine and drive and have pulled 200# guys up on wakeboards from both my rear pull point and now a tower without issue.

So, Unless all your guests are sitting back on the swim deck as you try to start the pull, you shouldnt have any "struggle" getting a rider up with that power package. As you say, could be their ability (or lack of...)Good luck!

Hope that helps

Hi All,

I started wakeboarding last year and that's the reason that I bought my first boat, a 77 Century Arabian. It took me a while to figure out how to do it but it can be done by a 40 year old.

The one thing that I tell all my students now is that if you are trying too hard, you are doing it wrong. Getting up is a piece of cake if you know how to do it. It should not be a struggle and should not tire you out. And you shouldn't have to 'fight' your way up.

Sink your board when getting tension and then ride it up like a magic carpet. Awesome.

BTW, I just bought a harness so that I can try to ride behind my 340. The wake is enormous and I'm really wanting a wake surfboard once I save my pennies.

Hi, Are you all still Wakeboaring (I know this is an old thread) but seems to be the only one about Wakeboarding etc. I am currently learning and managed small one wake jumps, some surface stuff like 180's power slides and 180 Ollie's but that all came quick due to 15 years snowboarding. Starting to do some cables parks now but find it more fun with a wake! I seem to be obsessed though as it keeps me busy between the snow season!

My 185 Sport seemz ok for wake but starting to weight the boat correctly with passengers etc, trimming up a little to clean the wake up and looking to buy a ski locker fat sac in the next week or so. I would love a proper ballast system but think it might be a pain to get installed in the UK as everything seems to be up the in the North although most sea activities happen in South coast ....

Perfect Pass is planned at some point as it seems hard to keep a constant speed in the sea, I have a vengeance 21p 3 blade prop at the moment and read that a High 5 would help lots too (very expensive in the UK).

Billandamy do you have your progress recently or are you not on here anymore :-(

Akeap
I randomly came back on here after a while, and saw your post.

Yes, still getting on the board, through not as much as I'd like. I have progressed well considering my lack of time on the water.

Getting a ton of air and as well have landed backside 180 from time to time.

As far as your boat, weight is important, and properly done. A 185 is kind of small to get a big wake, but it can be done enough to do most tricks.

Full tank of gas is a must as much as possible. A few people and fat sacks of course all make it better.

Are u on a lake or out in Hampton Bay doing this?
