Urbanna Oyster Festival November 2nd and 3rd

Tim isn't going anywhere either... his wife won't let him go out in this slop.

Just out of spite I'm going across the Bay to Baltimore tomorrow, with my wife and kids... you bastard! I hope you and the screaming, stupid and angry crowd have a good time staring at the wall!

Take your EPIRB.... buddy...

What's the Patapsco River from Rock Hall? 2 miles? Burn all of 8 gallons of fuel.... oooh....

Nah... I'll bet that Tim can burn much less than 8 gallons at those trawling speeds he likes to cruise at...

You know where the report button is? Upper right corner...

In the Army (and the Marine Corps as well) any time you have to change your basic plan you issue a fragmentary order, or "FRAGO". Obviously, the Oysterfest base plan is going to get Frago'd. We are going instead to Colonial Beach on Saturday night (original plan had me sipping a chilly Sam Adams Octoberfest at the Blue Heron Pub in Colonial Beach tonight, and mentally preparing myself to raft with Four Suns while being videotaped) We then plan to run to the Tides on Sunday if the bay flattens out. If the bay remains nasty, we are then going to head from Colonial Beach to either St. Mary's Yacht Center or Port Kinsale; Coles Point is Option 3.
What we are not going to do is sit around the house all weekend contemplating the home improvement projects which were overcome, and therefore not started this summer because we were running the 420DA for 150 or so hours on the mains.

I digress.

Sorry Tim... I looked it up and it's like 8 miles and not 2.

I guess that's 15 minutes of sheer terror. Sorta like a Bermuda crossing.

From Rock Hall to the mouth of the Patapsco is 19 NM?! No wonder your fuel milage calculations are so good. Your GPS is busted. How long is your boat again? 165 feet?

Baltimore is not at the mouth of the Patapsco... And it IS 19 nautical miles from my slip in Rock Hall to Inner Harbor East marina. I know because I am here! The bay wasn't so bad.... my wife even enjoyed the ride.

Well… I'll give my story on the Urbanna Oyster Festival here since we did end up going. We just didn’t go by boat.

I went out to the dock this morning and the wind was blowing about 25 knots out of the North and the water was about 2 feet above normal. Here’s a good ole shot of the Four Suns early this morning all dressed up and no place to go for the weekend:

Here’s a shot of my neighbors’ docks. There are two docks between me and the Viking and you can see the water has risen so much that one is about to go underwater and the other is already underwater (note the "floating furniture").

The wind was blowing pretty hard all night out of the North and the southern part of the Chesapeake Bay was just a mess so Four Suns wasn’t going… but we were… IN THE MINIVAN!!!!

We departed the house and dropped one my kids off at his job. He’s the only one gainfully employed at the moment and we need his paycheck:

We then drove for about 45 minutes to get to Urbanna. Upon arrival, the traffic was really bad:

The place gets like 50,000 people visiting this weekend (for a town of 2000 people normally) and they use the corn fields for parking. They are very nice corn fields as you can see by the parking prices:

We parked and walked into town. You come up on the bridge for Urbanna Creek with a sign explaining where the name came from. I guess people are glad the name has changed…

From the bridge, you can see the marinas on the west side as well the east side river. The weather must have kept everyone away (duh!) as the marinas had many slips open and the river only had a few boats anchored in it:

On the west side of the bridge, two lonely gas boats sat there at anchor with one of them running a gas genny… no sign of life though.

The town was a zoo and was packed with people. Here’s the main drag:

We stopped at one of the seafood stands and had a wonderful curbside dining experience for lunch:

The sweatshirt makes me look fat…. Not the crabcake sandwich and greasy fries and the fact I have a 480 DB. My youngest son also discovered funnel cakes:

We then proceed to work off this fattening lunch by doing some athletic activities. Here’s a shot of us on the hoops:

I thought this showed several things. First, on the right is my son showing great form shooting a basket. My son in the middle is not showing so good of form after shooting a basket. And then there is me showing what a great set of man-boobs I’ve developed over the last few years.

My kids out shot me 3 to 1… and here are the great rewards:

We then listened to some of the bands (they were pretty good) and discussed politics with the locals for awhile:

Later in the afternoon they had the big parade… and boy were the kids excited:

Sometimes you just can’t buy pictures like this or make this stuff up. Although I had a bad angle with the sun and my camera, you can see the big item of the parade here:

How in the world does one get the title of “Miss Spat”?! I would have loved to see this competition….

And here… this woman looks mighty happy:

DSC_0340.jpg

And how about a high school that has a dairy cow as a mascot and the high school victory call is “Cow-A-Dung-O!!”

DSC_0352.jpg

And some locals just drinking and picking the banjo in the parade:

DSC_0370-1.jpg

And this guy owns the cornfield we all parked in:

DSC_0364.jpg

How about this old man… he looks real happy driving this car:

DSC_0378.jpg

I think this is the same old guy we took a picture of in St. Michaels this summer:

We left shortly after the parade… We walked around some of the marinas and then hopped in the MINIVAN and came home.

Urbanna is a very quant and nice town. Definitely need to make this part of our usual stops next summer.

As we left, the two boats anchored out still had the gas genny running and still no sign of life:

Hmmmm….

Sure wish the weather had cooperated and I would have been able to get some pictures of other CSR members… oh well…

Gary-
Great job again with the pics and story. The b*tch is that it looks like such a nice day (weather wise)!

By the time we left, it would have been a great day on the water... oh well... Just too messy earlier. I would like to save the EPIRB for things that didn't involve poor planning. The problem I had was I have to travel down to the southern most part of the bay to get back up to Urbanna and that part of the bay was/is a mess (4 hours by boat... 45 minutes by car). I have this basic rule about weather: "Don't venture out in weather that has a name attached to it." I was obviously not the only sissy that didn't show up by boat.

COW-A-DUNG-O!!

Looks like you had a great day out with your family....great shots, but where are the folks snorting oysters???? Oh, and it seems odd, but your sons don't look fat in their sweat shirts !!!!!

You know... we didn't stick around for the heavy drinking part of the festival... we were driving after all. Now if my boat would have been there... different story. Snort City.

I half expected to see a "Miss Snort" after I saw "Miss Spat".

My sweatshirt is the higher quality and bulkier material sweatshirt...
