Unions are good?

The Boston Teachers Union staunchly opposes a performance bonus plan for top teachers - launched at the John D. O’Bryant School in 2008 and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates and Exxon Mobil foundations - insisting the dough be divvied up among all of a school’s teachers, good and bad.

This was part of Leno's monologue last nite, he talked about this, and said even the Obama administration is saying "Hey, that's socialism" (Unfortunately, they aren't, and they don't see the difference, or the repurcussions)

There are good Unions and bad Unions, what they haven't learned yet is that when times are bad they need to give back to keep thing going but they don't want to do that because then the dues go down and they make less money. How many BA's do you see driving around in Union bought Caddy's and Lincoln’s? The Unions won't back up there members like they use to they tell them to shut up and be glad they have a job. I belong to Local 399 Operating Engineers we were getting $3per hour toward our Pensions now they cut us back to $1 per hour as far as I can see most investments are close to or at pre crash levels so where is the money going? SEIU and other Unions want the health care bill to pass so they can dump all their members on it and put more money in their pockets. As far as the Pilots Union why didn't they make sure that United's pension money was secured they all got screwed, people with 30 years got nothing.

I think the main reason most people who are not in Unions think they are useless and out dated is because we see mostly the bad/stupid/ludicrous things that they get away with.

My sons Kindergarten teacher was laid off due to budget issues. In the 2 years she worked at the school she had a 100% read rate upon graduation. The worst Kindergarten teacher had about a 60% read rate and was not touched because she has been working in that school for 24 years. This is because of tenure (Union rules) not skill.

A family member works in Management at Coke, the stupid Union rules at Coke would shock you. For example, a case of soda dropped off a pallet and broke apart on the floor, no can opened just 12 cans of soda on the floor. He picked up the cans because they were blocking the forklift path and work continued. He had a grievance filed on him because he took a Union job away by picking up 12 cans of soda.

A friend was in the Carpenters Union, changed professions for 5 years, decieded he wanted to get back into Carpentry again, the Union will not let him back in until he pays ALL of his back dues.

GM, I don’t remember the exact numbers but 4-6 thousand dollars of every car sold goes to retired employee’s health benefits. WTF man, when I retire, I’m on my own. (I do believe that it would not be right to take that away because life planning was determined based on these factors)

The list goes on and on. That’s the way a lot of non Union people see Unions.

Chicago just lost 2 major trade shows and may lose a third - why? Because the cost to put on the trade show is out of control. Why are the costs out of control? Because inorder to do any trade type work, it must be done by a union employee.

For all you union members out there, do yourself a favor and research how over/under funded your pension/healthcare plans are. Guess what, for the rank and file, they are massively underfunded. However, for the union leadership - the same people who tell you how important they are to your needs - their plans are overfunded.

Also, why do you think the unions want a public healthcare option - perhaps they may want to kick your health insurance to the government.

Lets take a look at the industries that are heavily influenced by the union:
1 - airlines
2 - steel
3 - auto
4 - government

Guess what, all those industries are in poor shape.

I agree everything in Chicago is out of hand that is why I always say I didn't loose anything there so no reason to go there. Except may the Boat Show.

How come all unions/governments are exempt from direct pay cuts?

Because they are already so far behind (teachers)? Or, they aren't exempt, but I agree that the unions can get in the way of adjustments.

Teachers Unions really piss me off because they are more about getting a agenda get across teaching that it is ok for Billy to have 2 daddies or Jane having 2 mommies and of course they have to learn songs in kindergarten praising Obama screwing young kids heads up and all on our dime.:smt013

Education, look at the sorry shape it is in, much has to do with teachers unions.

lets remember something here, unions are the ones who brought you something called the weekend, you know sat, sunday when you can spend time on your boat i bet 1/2 the union bashers on this forum are company owners and they want to fill there pockets like the rest of corporate america, the unions help the american worker in so many different ways. I can't believe there is so much hate towards the unions coming from hard working boat owners, unless you are not a hard working american but rather a greedy business owner that dislikes unions because they keep you in check and share your wealth, by the way if 1/2 the people who drive foreign cars, trucks the trouble that happened with the american auto industry would not have happened and your pockets would not have hurt so much. I wonder what us boaters would have done if foreign boat makers invaded us like the foreign auto makers did. BE a AMERICAN SUPPORTER and BUY AMERICAN and leave the union bashing out of the boating world, my 2 cents

Spoken like a true blood sucking "I want to sit on my ass and you give me your money" douche bag.

Let's see... Those of you that own your own business... You get to take Saturday and Sunday off and leave work behind? I sure don't...

Let's see... How much did I use my boat this past summer... hmmm... ZIP! So much for weekends.

You obviously skipped basic grammar lessons in school. I bet that was the teacher's fault....

Well... back to writing this report that is due on Monday... BTW... my weekend is shot as I have to get some work done. I need a union...

I have used my boat quite a bit this year, but always with a laptop, cell and wifi access on board. FOR WORK. I am self employed, but thats not why I bash unions.

I don’t hate union workers, just the GREEDY lazy fat @ss ones who want to share the wealth with out working for it.

Oh and by the way I’m a hard working American that happens to own my own business and pays my employees very well, weekends off? That must be for union members or greedy business owner.

Dumb @ss

I new i would find 1 greedy ceo, I work hard for my money, i have been a proud union member for 17 yrs. and have used my boat every weekend during the summers. I don't feel sorry for people like you maybe if you bought a boat that you didn't need to work weekends to pay for you might enjoy life like me, or do you have to keep up with the rest of greedy ceo's and have a 48' boat that gets no use but every one nows who owns it, it sits right next to the other ceo's boat that never leaves the dock. ps i'm glad i don't work for your company i sense a lot of hate from your reply, feel sorry for your employes

I knew it!!! I have to become one of them there greedy CEO's to move up to a 48 so I don't have to boat around in this crappy 44. Thanks for pointing my career back on the right path, twomad.

please tell me what kind of attitude do i have, some guy calls me a douche bag, another says i have a attitude, another says i'm a fat lazy @ss, and another says i helped him with his career, are you all trying to defend some guy who is angry because he owns a business and has to work weekends instead of boating like me. now thats funny
