The restoration of Never Monday, 1989 340DA updated 08/29/07

What a nasty day to move a boat.
After replacing the starter on the port engine. It sheared the Bendix off. I cranked'em both up, and off we went to our new slip. It was about a 30min run at 2000 RPM. the Stbd engine was still pulling some bad gas and mabey a little water off of the bottom of the tank and sputtering occasionally. After about 10 min it calmed down and ran pretty well. I can't get her to plane and run over 3000 rpm. I guess with all the furniture out of the cabin there is no weight forward.
What a great adventure for a boat sooo many people have written off.
Even with the constant drizzle and occasional down pour, I had a blast making the run.

I like to hear that you had your kick today Pat!
Do you really think that you can't get her to plane because there isn't enough weight in the front??
Do you think your engines can reach enough rpm's?
Maybe you can do a test with 6 of your friends and family.

Hey Pat

Do you remember how your batteries are wired? I'm supposed to have three (with the generator) and they PO removed one. The pieces I found stashed away a diagram nearby appear to suggest that the starting batteries are to be wired in parallel? I thought I'd find one each for port, starboard, and the genset.

Thanks.

Skip,
Mine are in total disarray. I'll build a new system when i get it back together. One for each battery, an emergence parallel switch and one for the gen.

As far as I can tell, given the reading I did this week...

The starboard motor has it's own starting battery. It's of course isolated and can be used to start the port engine with the 'emergency start' switch. This battery is currently a group 27 (I think) in my boat.

The house batteries are used to start the port motor and consist of 2 group 31's wired in parallel.

So...

My house batteries are caca. I'll replace them with a couple of Deka group 31's for now, maybe Optima blue tops later. Why? Because the blue tops would run me about $460 vs. $250 for the wet cells. I can top off the water for a few years. Besides, I think I'd have to change my charger anyway to properly charge the Optima's.

I considered a couple of 6v golf cart batteries but think that would be overkill for my needs. The two 31's should be plenty of power for my usage. I haven't counted out a couple of 8d's (or maybe one?) yet but for the same reason think that they are unnecessary.

The marina repair shop owner where I keep the boat sells Deka because he believes that they are a very good value for the $ and I trust his recommendation wholeheartedly.

Lifeline AGM's would run about $800 and require a new battery charger. Call me cheap, but that isn't an option for a 20 year old boat.

Thanks for the response and sorry for the hijack :)

I thought ya'll would like an update. I've been so busy working I haven't had time to do anything on the boat.
Last April I moved the business to a new shop that's 75' deep and 25' wide with a 12x18 door. This morning I pulled the boat out on it's trailer. Tomorrow after a good draining from the rain I'll squeeze the 11'11" beam thru the 12' 1/2" door opening. Then she'll be tucked away inside to dry out and let me work on her in relative comfort and light. Pics tomorrow.

Ok Pat,

Like to hear from you!
Nice that you have time again, to work on your boat.

Peter.
