The death of my 340DA - Roof collapse at SMYC

Thats good news! On the arch, it may be easier for a good glass shop to build a replacement rather than try to find a used one. The brite side to all this is you will start the season with a new canvas.

We'll see about the arch. i am really not interested in rebuilding the arch ... but we'll see. New canvas ... hmmm ... my canvas was absolutely pristine 100% ... it also was the heavy strata glass type not the flimsy isinglass, so I would have rather kept my old camper ... what is sad is that my boat was just perfect. No dings, scuffs, scratches or anything and I cleaned her up at least once a month even if we did not use her ... polished and waxed her three times a year and it showed .... all that work invested .... anyway, gotta move on ...

Gotta move on?

What rubbish talk is that. You are getting a new arch and new canvas. This damage is "almost" cosmetic. The basic structural integrity of the boat and the engines are fine, right? I think you will be fine. Life is good. This is just a "setback".

You probably had some home projects you needed to catch up on, right?

I know all too well how this feels. I received that dreaded call from the marina during the winter two years ago this week. My boat fell off the stands due to a cycle of thawing and freezing.

The word to describe the feeling is sheer and utter shock. That feeling of speechlessness and inability to comprehend what this means is impossible to explain. I feel for you, I've been there, done that, got the T-ishirt.

I sincerely hopes it works out for you. The boat didn't sink so there is always hope.

Alex, Good Luck finding that arch. I lost a bilge vent cover on labor day and still cant find a new one. Hunted down the company that made them for SR and he told me they stopped mfg in the last year. The kicker is SR took back the molds and prob destroyed them. The guy couldn't make me a new one if he wanted to. my fiberglass guy is gonna make a custom one but he has had some trouble locating a loaner to make a mold. My advice is call SR back and see if you can find the mfr co's name and #. Give them a call directly.

Gene, your story reminded me of something that happened to my brother a couple years ago @ a local marina. His 49' house boat was on blocks for the winter and the dimwits left the forklift running while doing some work in the yard. Well lo & behold the thing gets going hit's his boat right in the stern and rips off his swim platform. You know they didn't even call him? One of his buds at the marina bar did. Then the clowns half assed the repair. He had to chase them until the next season to make it right, or as right as they could....Geez. :smt013

Alex

In the wake of what happened, that sounds like good news. Hopefully it will be like new when it is finally repaired.

Do you know how your insurance company will handle the arch if in fact it requires a replacement and a used one can't be found?

Dave

Can you explain how a boat falls off the stands from temperature changes?

:smt017 Actually looks like a justification for something else... and falling from the stands should hurt more than the accident that occurred to Alex...

^== "due to cycles of freezing and thawing" . . .probably the next sentence is something about freezing and thawing being outside of their liability.

Where as, "We ran a fork truck into your boat and it fell over" would be a bit harder to say is outside of their liability.

When there is a warm day the ground thaws. If there is also a layer of snow it also melts and this creates mud. If there is nothing under the stands (my yard places the stands on plywood pads), the stands sink into the mud. Then when the muddy ground re-freezes the freezing water content makes the ground expand and pushes the stand upwards. A couple of cycles of this and stands walk out from under the boat.

But this should not happen if the boat has been blocked and the stands are set properly so they won't sink in softened ground.

Some marinas chain the stands together when storing outside. Always struck me as a good idea.

Someone made a comment at the time that chains are required by OSHA. Seems that it might only apply to the tall stands for sailbotes.

I have to say the yard was great; they took full responsbility. (Hmmm, chains....) Damage was to the rub rail and the bow rail of the starboard side as the boat came to rest against my neighbor. It only dropped about 18", but still. It's good as new now and a survey showed no issues.

You can try to put words to the shock of having things like this happen, but the wave of emotions can only be felt, not described. Sounds like repairs may well get Alex back to normal. Hope it goes OK.

Alex....that's a tough situation you are in. You got 'mostly' good advise above. Hang in there and I'm sure you'll come out of this whole. Good Luck....

Alex, That is a horrible thing to have happen, I have a little boat that lives on a trailer, it would make me sick if something like that happened to it. On the bright side it sounds like you will be ok after repairs. Hang in there and hope all will be well.

Has anyone see Al Gore? This should have not happened with Global Warming. Sorry for your loss, but hoping it can be repaired for boating season

I've always said that those "Global Warming" gurus seem to dissapear during winter:smt021, only to reappear come summer!

However, now that "Global Warming" has become a joke with many experiencing record setting cold winters - they've just changed the name to "Climate Change" so they can induce fear of all sorts of changes instead of just heat in the summer!:smt101

Once you're whole again, just think - your dock will be rebuilt stronger and be able to withstand "climate changes" in the years to come!

Thank you for the (mostly) comforting comments. I really appreciate it! My slip neighbor send me some pictures of my 340 after they pulled her from the wreckage last Monday morning and before they shrink wrapped her. They did a great job avoiding any additional damage to the boats and mine is now safely moored at the dock with a full shrink wrap.

The arch looks not repairable to me. Not safely anyway. It is just too far mangled and gone in my opinion. Luckily the curved glass is intact, but the window frame looks bent on the SB side too so I hope a new window frame can be found. I guess flat glass can always be custom cut, so hopefully that's available. Only two flat panes are broken. And the entire camper and bimini are of course destroyed.
