The big old 80's 340 owners thread

7 hours again and no joy! A couple weeks ago after a hard run to burn off old fuel, the port engine shut down after coming off plane and wouldn't restart. Figured I'd run the tank dry, so switched to other tank with no luck, changed filters...nothing. Plenty of fuel, but spark seemed week (all new ignition parts) so finally swapped ignition systems and she fired right up, but no water from exhaust so knew impeller let go. Went today to clean all grounds and check suspect thunderbolt module on starboard engine before condemning it, which starts and runs fine now, but the port engine is back to how it was before swapping modules...makes no darn sense! Frustrated and tired figured I'd go ahead and change the impeller on the dead port engine...what a total PITA is that!! No slot in the bracket to slip off the captive bolt, hoses permanently rusted on the cast tubes, and can only find about two fins worth of rubber from the completely shredded impeller.

So...any ideas on the non-running engine appreciated, and the name/address of the idiot that designed the raw water pump so I can go beat him to a pulp also welcomed!
And another reason I love my Crusaders

Have the carbs been rebuilt?????

Have a look at the thrill ride that I initially went through - might be something in there for you

Yes, carbs both rebuilt and plenty of fuel. Certainly ignition related, but can't see how the swap of modules fixed, then next time out without changing anything it's back to same symptoms. The tach on that engine was acting up before all this, so this weekend plan to check on that end of the system (ignition switch/tach connections).

One other thing...head started "pushing" sewage out the overboard when flushed and tank is not full! Yuck!!!

That over board discharge needs to be mechanically closed or the Coast Guard will light you up if they inspect your bilge!

Back to the issue...

Thermal problem?
If you let everything cool off, does it go away?
Ive have seen that many times.....

Swapping modules might have given enough time for the faulty item to cool off.

Pick up coil in the distributor ?

Both the engines have been cool when the swap was done, and as such ever since. Tried swapping pick ups, both are new, no change. Heading out tomorrow to isolate out tachometer and ignition switch...note that the port tach has been acting up lately so if it is shorting out internally could certainly kill spark. Have to get that miserable raw water pump back together and installed first though :-(

I just discovered this thread while Googling for some v drive info. I read 69 pages of great information shared among owners of these beautiful old boats. We bought our 1985 340 in Aug of '12 and our maiden voyage was from Port Clinton on Lake Erie to Northport, MI, on Lake Michigan. Much better for this water than our 260 Sundancer of the same vintage. Looking forward to absorbing as much information as I can and maybe adding something occasionally.

Good to have you aboard Demoman! Congratulations on your 340...although only 7 feet more than the 260, it's really twice the boat ;-)

David

Sure is! I'm still getting used to twins, but I love the way it handles. I've had to do a bit of work on it starting with the fresh water tank, and recently the port v drive had to come out. That was an interesting problem that I'll write up soon in case anyone's interested. Jim

Nice to see another 85 here... keep in mind on some of this info that our boats interiors are built backwards from the 87 up.

FINALLY...although I thought I swapped distributor pickups at some point, apparently not! Didn't really suspect them as they were both brand new less than six months ago, but obviously that was the problem as it moved with it when swapped to other engine and fired up immediately with the opposite.

So I can now pump out my stinking poo tank!!!!

Very Cool - Glad to hear the ignition problem is isolated.

Now for a chunk of potential bad news, if you over filed the holding tank, there exists a great possibility that your holding tank vent filter got wet as well.
If it did, you get to rebuild or replace it. If you flush and magically the area around your boat smells like $%!* - you will know :wow:

Yep...it's a gonner! The plan is to take out the factory tank, treatment system and overboard pump, and replace with a bigger holding tank. While I'm in there I have all new battery boxes and going to install a more "modern" battery charger, so that side of the bilge will seem sparse compared to its current mess of hoses, wires, pumps, etc. :)

Where is the holding tank vent filter in our girls?
The manual says "center salon floor hatch opening to the bilge"
Is that right? - Maybe I just dont remember seeing it.....

Behind starboard side mirror in the mid cabin. Take the mirror down and there it is.

Greetings Jas!

Ya - that makes a bit more sense than what the manual had to say.

How did your A/C circuit breaker festival go?

I am still on the hunt. I was quoted a price of $200 for a 3 minimum order. Crossing with a newmar and thought I had one nailed down for $60 but not sure what's going on there now. I think I'm going to have to make my panel fit a two switch duel pole breaker.

Did you get my picture's?
