Spent 4 hours showing the boat yesterday

Greg,
The best advice I can give you is lose the idea of your next boat until you sell this one AND make sure you set your price, quit negotiating yourself down and stand firm. They either want the boat or not at the price you ask. If the counter with a REASONABLE offer fine, but don't keep negotiating yourself down accepting adjustments for taxes, hauling fees, "oh it needs to be winterized now", blah, blah, blah.

Best of luck but hold your guns man. Once She's sold then go boat hunting. It's too easy to justify losing your shorts if you're more focused on the next boat.

We sold 2 boats before this one...similar experiences....in fact I was suppose to meet a guy to collect the check on the last one and hand over the title, he never showed, later called me stating he had a harley davidson he had to sell first, would I take a trade.

The ONLY reason I negotiated with myself here was based on the feedback here and from a broker we have been talking to. The market stinks, if you get an offer, it's close enough, take it and run.

Actually, I have done quite a bit of negotiating in my life, dealing with millions of dollars at a time and have done well. This though, selling a boat in this market, is a different beast.

I am no longer looking at boats....stopped a few weeks ago. No need to, makes no sense until Mrs R is gone.

wait, i'm confused. everything is starting to become one big buying and selling haze. You were shopping for a boat and negotiating, but not ready to buy. Then someone comes to buy your boat but he's not ready to buy. Then you determine he's not ready to buy and don't respond to his second offer. The brokers don't respond to you. You low ball your offers, you get low balled on offers. Are we talking about one person or multiple people?

Maybe both sides visit this forum.

Re-read my "buying a boat" posts. We have never made an offer on a boat since owning Mrs R, except for the center console we recently purchased. In fact, I have never even talked pricing or negotiated with a broker. Not sure where you got this idea.

"don't respond to his second offer"

He never gave me a chance to..he called first to pretty much tell me he did not have the $$$.

Please, feel free to judge, but get your information correct first.

I can't really comment on the process here or what was right or wrong. My "Don't put Greg in sales" comment had to do more with claiming victory before the game was over. I've been burned many times listening to people in my professional life that say the "deal was done" when it there was nothing there....

Agreed, and I understood it that way.

My original intent with the original post was to simply:

1 - Thank those here that have educated me on our boat, which allowed me to answer all of the prospective buyers questions and present myself as a knowledgeable owner

2 - Let folks know you may need to spend a little extra time on the sale of your boat in this market

I have received mixed messages in response, but, overall a lot of great content, as always.

Greg, you don’t really expect us to believe that do you? Boating is a disease and when the sour taste of this non-deal goes away, you will most likely be visiting the boat shows and checking the boat sites online.

You have to keep looking because it is what we do. This is what has forced me to buy 5 boats in 10 years.

Hang in there!

I received an email from the prospective buyer last night:

So, as all can see, I made the right decision on this one. And yes, I know this is a public forum and hopefully this gentlemen finds and reads this discussion. Maybe he will learn something from it too.

you forgot the negative sign.....I got banged with that all through high school math...

That was just too much.

There are just too many possible responses. Of course, silence is probably the best response.

Not only is this guy not a prospective buyer, he's not even a prospective adult.
This whole thread is like a root canal gone bad....and the novocaine is wearing off

Profit? 10X? What the heck is this guy thinking? Did you buy that boat for 1/10th the price the week prior? Profit? Were you supposed to be making those payments on his behalf all of these years? He's just supposed to take over payments?

This guy has to be one of those with a mortgage that I'm preparing to cover for. That PISSES me off. I have a 4.375 fixed rate mortgage for 15 years. Now, I'm going to pay for the idiots who bought houses twice as big as mine, refinanced them to buy their kids Hummers (the cars), got caught up in a 3% loan which is now balooning to 12%, can't refi because the house isn't worth the loan amount.......... It PISSES me off!

The guy acts like he's doing you a favor buying your boat. What an idiot. You're much better off having dumped him.

I received an email from the prospective buyer last night:

"You guise it under the umbrella of "I'm just trying to educate you." (If you were going to educate me why didn't you say: "Hey guy I don't want to take all your money you are paying too much.") Imagine that... the "Seller" educating the "Buyer" about the faux pas he's about to make. Kinda comical.

Would you be willing to educate me on how much money you owe on the boat and exactly how much of a profit you are looking to make or would have made if this transaction would have gone through. Maybe if we started from there I could have easily said deal or no deal. I understand fully that when you sell something you want to make a profit. I have no problems with that.
Let me preface my next sentence to say that this is not directed at you I'm speaking in general. I do however have problems when a seller is out to make 10 times more than something is worth."

So, as all can see, I made the right decision on this one. And yes, I know this is a public forum and hopefully this gentlemen finds and reads this discussion. Maybe he will learn something from it too.

Are you serious? What a douche!

Doug

Greg- this guy is still in your head. He worked you like a video game. You say YOU made the right decision? You haven't made any decisions at all. This guy has been in charge from the minute he walked on your boat. He is still working your emotions now. I don't care what kind of market is out there, you have to lead the sales process and you have to stand up for your bottom line.

Your prospect is an idiot, but you've let him waste your time and get you worked up for over a week now. For the love of God, would you please send this guy a copy of the soldboats.com print out along with a note that says your bottom line. If he is interested, send you a written contract along with a 10% deposit. If not, you need NO further communication. Take this guy's money or get rid of him.
