Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

Randy,

The short answer is no, a DD 2-stroke mixes no oil in the fuel. It is similar to a 4-stroke in that regard, but similar to a gas/oil mix 2-cycle engine only by the lack of a separate exhaust stroke: they have a port in the cylinder wall for exhaust, and a "blower" (which some people refer to as a supercharger) to expedite that process.

Aside from the evacuation blower/supercharger, a "TA" (turbo, aftercooled) engine like the 540's also has traditional turbochargers to compress incoming air.

:smt017 I am now confused....but I think I might have it. The Diesel 4 stroke is similar to the gasoline 4 stroke other than the obvious like spark plugs and compression. The Diesel 2 stroke is similar to the gasoline 2 stroke other than the lubrication aspect of it.

What would be the advantage of a diesel 2 stroke over a diesel 4 stroke?

Sorry about adding that "R" to your name...

You summed it up well. As far as advantages, I can't think of many. DD's aren't particularly lighter than a similar 4-stroke, so that might explain why few mfr's made them, and as far as I know, no-one still does.

Paul,
We had some complications with paperwork and it did not go through yesterday! Today is supposed to be the day i am waiting on a phone call now to head down to the documentation lady to close.... My head is spinning i have soooo much to accomplish yet, getting this bought is just a small part of the journey!! I now have to get teh repairs done the bottom cleaned and it on the ship which may be delayed until June 20th ...so going a litte nuts right now!!! Was going to get a 13 ft tender for the back but now thinking a 3 seater jetski, think i would enjoy that more ...only thing i must find out will one of those hydraulic platforms accomodate something as heavy as a jetski or is it a bad idea???
Sorry i have not been keeping you guys updated just going nuts trying to get it all done!!

Andy, Thanks for the well wishes!! I am sorry i can not answer your questions on the engines i honestly do not know! I am sure someone here will be able to help you and answer it for you!

Ok guys im off to pull my hair out will let you know how it all goes later on tonight!

Rob

Rob, just remember that you will need to get a separate PWC licence in Australia if you go with a jetski. Just another licence to get but one you would not need if you went with a normal RIB inflatable tender. Something like this is what I would go for if it were me and I had the room and davit crane.

Permit answer,

If your boat is not NSW or QLD registered (probably all states really ) you need a permit to cruise in their waters.

hope that helps

Quick update..
Closing has still not happened, my document person is awaiting original documents from the sellers attourney. Tomorrow or Friday it should happen hopefully! I want to get out of here and go home!
I changed my mind on the jetski Paul, cuz told me they are illegal in Sydney harbor so totally pointless in that case.
Not going to register it in the Caymans, would cost several thousand dollars where registering it in Australia will be several hundred! Amazing how much money all of this is costing i have been handing it out like candy! They wanted a tonnage survey, seriously! The manufacturer states what its weight is and its well documented, dont get that one!
So sitting around waiting for this to finish up so i can make the repairs and ship it off!

Yes jetski's are being evicted out of many areas due to idiots making themselves a nuisance on them in swimming areas etc.

Yep, I know all about the money flow it is never ending, everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Just remember once you get the boat back in Newcastle that it is Humpback Whale season and there will be pods moving along the coast heading to the nursing grounds at Hervey Bay. You will need to be very vigilant on the trip from Newcastle to Sydney in order to avoid a collision with these migrating whales.

Paul,

Thanks for that info on the migrating whales!! I will be extremely careful, I plan on going really slowly and will have a licensed captain with me. Would be neat to see a few whales on the trip back, definately don't want to hit any of them!!

I live in Bondi, last year I was down walking along the boardwalk and noticed a crowd by the railing all looking out at the sea. A pair of whales came in really close to the shore and were playing, jumping around out there. Was a really cool sight, they stuck around for 20 mins or so :)

Thanks for that tip, will make sure and do some research as to the beat route and safest way down to Sydney to make sure a whale and us do not meet!!

I can do without most of the hassle and regulations I see that you mates have to go through to enjoy boating....except for the one law posted above. And I'm not bashing the considerate jetski rider....unfortunately....the considerate jetski rider around these parts is a rare bird......a VERY rare bird!!!!

No point thinking about a route from Newcastle to avoid whales..they (whales) make their own route. Trip down from Newcastle is relatively simple, come out of the harbour about a 1knm (watch out for the many ships entering or exiting the port chuck a right, autopilot on sit back and enjoy the trip. I have passed Newcastle a number of times when there must have been around 50 ships anchored
waiting to come in to port..quite impressive really.

Looking forward to that trip and seeing all the ships anchored there waiting to head in, sounds really really cool cant wait!!
This whole process has been so frustrating for me! STill have not closed now they are saying monday! I have done my part, the full price of the yacht is sitting in my brokers escrow account and has been for a week...still just waiting on the seller to get us all the paperwork we need!! So hopefully monday, i planned on being in the states a week...going on 3 weeks now and if it closes monday no way i can leave on thursday too much to get done!! SO will have to extend my stay again ...costing me a fortune in hotel fees, car rental..changing the ticket each time costs 200 bucks!!
I had no idea how difficult of a process all of this was... just hoping it is done soon so i can go home finally!! The shipping company has still not gotten back to me on wether i can be on the 20th of this month sailing or not! If not then i have to wait until JUne 20th arrrrrggghhhh this is all driving me nuts!!
So hopefully Monday is the day and i can finally get to the repairs and throw a tender on the back! Found a nice 13 fter with a 25 hp and center console for a good price!
Just want it to be over!!!

The guy you are buying the boat from does he own the boat or are there 3rd parties involved such as a bank..Maybe you might want to check this..I remember a site over there which for a small fee
can tell you who owns the boat..I think it could be part of the USCG..Maybe someone here can provide detail.

Ozzie

I just read your thread and looked at the speck sheet. WOW, looks like this is going to be a great home away from home. Good luck and I really hope it works out. If you don't mind my asking, how are you planing on getting it home? Are you going motoring it home or having someone else do it? If you get a chance, I'm sure a lot of us wouold like to see some pictures.

Keep your head up! Hopefully this works out for you!!

Hi ozzie.

It's pretty complicated hence the delay in everything. Just my luck my broker says this is the hardest most complex closing he has done in 35 years lol figures it would go this way.

My documentation lady is very good all she does is this. The first thing she did was look into the boat it's history and who owns it.
The yacht was custom made and bought brand new by this owner. He owns several companies, the boat has bounced around between his corporations. At one point had some large liens on it.
His daughters corporation now owns the yacht there is still some sort of lien on it but they have a court order stating as soon as the yacht is sold all liens shall be considered satisfied. Don't ask I dunno doesn't make sense to me but my document person knows what she's doing and is very well respected. She says it is all good and not to worry.
So the owner was out of the country and just pulled into keywest with a cruise ship hence the delay in getting papers signed. The selling broker sent a runner to key west today to try and get the signed originals up here in time for us to close but he didn't make it in time. Ozzie key west is about a four and a half hour drive each way from us. It was suggested that we close with emailed copies of the signed documents but the doc lady said that is not the safest thing to do and we should wait for the signed originals which we will have for monday. So that's the scope of the story.

Because the yacht was custome built for the owner it has a lot of really nice extras. Like someone mentioned there is a storage cabinet near the front berth that others don't have. The owner had an atlas system installed so I can plug into power anywhere in the world. So it's already rigged for the Aussie shore power. All the TVs etc are multisystem so they are good to go in Australia. Has a satellite phone system installed. Along with a lot of other neat little bits and pieces like a brand new never used sunpad for the bow.

I am extremely happy with the yacht, just want to get it closed and get it home asap so I can start enjoying it!

New picture gallery, you can see from the pics how clean this yacht is the owner really really took care of it so well! I have looked at a lot of yachts since I have been here and this one really stands out above the others!

To answer the other questions the yacht is being shipped in a container ship, through the panama canal and then off to Sydney. That also was fun getting insurance for some reason some companies would insure the whole trip except the canal leg weird!! Appox five week sailing.

The owner is a super nice guy and will be walking me through the yacht in the next few days and showing me how to use everything like the desalination plant. I'm sure it will be a huge help ! Was really great of him to offer!

Rob,

The reason why the insurance companies are hesitant to insure throught the canal is because that route passes through pirate waters. There are piratings happening everyday in this neck of the woods and ships and crews are being held for ransom. The only other passage is around the horn which is a very large deviation which costs the shipping firms a lot of money so they chance the voyage through the Canal. It is once they get out of the canal that the pirating problems really kick in.

Oh another quick question..Who is taking your boat to the ship?? have you organised someone?? I had someone to come with me but because there was a delay by one day due to storms my helper
wasn't available and had to do it by myself...Oh well, at least it was a really nice day and I can tell you I was really happy to start heading home. However!! a damn supercell storm was heading for Dallas and had whipped up all these tornado's. My plane from Hobby airport was cancelled and a lot of people tried to get allocation on standby. I was lucky enough to get the last seat on this pencil aircraft. The stupid thing looked like a mosquito. We were kept on the tarmac for too long and had to return to refuel "argh". I tell you with all the problems with shipping etc I thought I was doomed. After ducking and weaving this storm and thinking of the worst we landed. Dallas was very crowded, people sleeping everywhere. My flight to LA was cancelled so I put my name down on standby mind you there were 112 on standby. I was the last name called out to leave on this plane..

Home I am going home..

Ozzie

Paul : I did not know there were piracy problems in that region of the world! Who would think in todays day and age that companies would have to worry about piracy!! I dont get why these cargo ships do not arm the crew really well just in case of events like that. I know when i worked on the cruise ships I was told there was a whole armory on the ship and the security crew who were usually Filpinos were trained in case of an attack on the ship. Well that makes sense, now I understand why a few insurance companies refused to insure that leg of the journey!!

Ozzie : Myself, a captain and one of the brokers will be taking the yacht to the cargo ship ... I am not worried about it as it is docked under a mile from the port so not much of a trip to get it to the ship.
That sounds like an absolute nightmare of a trip Ozzie!!! I bet you were soooooo glad to get home! Crazy how sometimes everything that can go wrong does go wrong, yet somehow we always make it through in the end and end up with a cool story to tell later on!! Mosquito airplane sounds pretty scary, i bet you were not feeling to happy being up in the air in that thing lol

I once was supposed to pick up a ship in Maui, flying out from Miami ...took me 37 hours to get to Hawaii lol All kinds of stupid things happened like a stewardess shooting the ermegency ramp out on to the runway and an engine breaking on the plane inflight. That was with TWA which does not exist anymore, i remember swearing I would never fly that airline again...was supposed to have a full day in Maui instead i pretty much got on the ship and it sailed lol.

Closed, its all mine, now the real fun begins ....getting it ready for shipping!! Then I will finally get to go home!!
