Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

Ok now getting down to the hard stuff getting this thing ready for shipping.. Any advice from people that have shipped a yacht before would be greatly greatly appreciated!! Starting to feel a little flustered with all of this has been going on for sooo long now with so many hurdles to overcome! Bimini top, what do you do with it? MY guess is take it all down for the trip??? May sound like a stupid question but i simply do not know..... aNything and everything advice and information you guys can provide me would be a life saver! Thanks for the name ideas!!

Ozzie what kind of company did you use to get the freon pumped out of the AC and refridgerators and the halon out of teh fire control system? WHo should i contact that does this type of thing?
From what you have told me
i need to get all refridgerant removed or any gasses that damage the ozone
Have the bottom thoroughly cleaned or customs will quarantine the vesssel
pump out all of the fresh water and sewage tanks etc.
The vessel is almost out of USCG documentation will be in a few days.
Have i missed anything Ozzie is there anythng else i should know or do to prepare for its entry into Australia?

For those of you that have doubted what i am saying is true and that i am making this stuff up, i have a bill of sale now that i will happily post to prove this is not some hogwash! Yes i dont know much about all of this, yes i went in blind but now i own a 54 Sea Ray so i m part of the club so lets be friends ok!

Here are a few names i was thinking of let me know what you guys think!

Sea Tiger ...liked this as its very powerful had it doing 40 mph the other day and i used to train tigers in my 20's .... www.szarkaduo.com to see who i was before i got hurt.
Playbuoy ...... just thought this was funny found it on some list
Wave Dancer .... dunno just like it
Le Cabaret ........... Name of the first theatre i ever performed in and my dad built.
The Bondi ....after my favorite place in the world and my home bondi beach
The Laszlo ....after my father who passed away he would have loved this boat
Dazzling Deception ..... first show i ever performed in
Artiste De La mer ..... performer of the seas, just like the way it sounds
Acrodancer ..... what the Rudas acrobats were called i was part of that troupe
Dunno all i have come up with so far

SO many thanks to everyone that has helped me on this journey and given advice etc!! You have no idea how much you all have helped me with all of this!

Rob

Rob, as I said earlier that the boat name becomes important when making VHF calls in which the boat name is repeated 3 times. Best to keep the name as uncomplicated as possible and not one that may be hard to understand especially if there is an emergency situation. The first boat I looked at to buy was called "Whatever" which although it sounded fun could have been misconstrued in an emergency situation as to someone being off handed and rude to the receiving station.

I think out of the list you have given I like Wave Dancer the best.

Rob,
Are you a member of the Szarka Duo?
If you are then I just pulled your bio up. Very impressive. I hope you recover from your injury so you can perform again.

Ok now getting down to the hard stuff ...

Rob

My is vote "Hard Stuff".

Yes, I am a doubter, yet your persistence is converting me. You have an amazingly monstrous mountain to climb in front of you, yet unaware of the size of the mountain and its pitfalls, you keep chipping away. Big Thumbs UP !!!

Attitude is everything, and your attitude is moving mountains.

Thanks Paul, I will keep that in mind!

If anyone still doubts the validity of this i can post the bill of sale, have it right here next to me, actually i will do it :) To be honest LTD i had a bit of a break down today, just felt a bit overwhelmed and like what have i done lol
I was told by the selling broker i would be able to keep the yacht there and the previous owner told me i had to move it within a few days, trying to figure out how i can get the work done on it in time as i have a week till it goes on the cargo ship and so much yet to do!
Im scared to drive the thing its so damned big and these canals in Florida are small and tight.. It will need to be moved to a station to pump out the tanks and sailed to the cargo ship, think i will hire a captain for it.. just keep reminding myself what a beautiful boat it is! I guess i will just be really relieved once it is on the ship to Australia and i can go home! I have had to keep extending my stay and everytime i extend it costs me like a thousand dollars. I was going to live on it this week, but the airconditioning has a problem and its too hot here to be somewhere without AC, no point in fixing it as i have to have the whole system converted in Australia anyways. Had a beautiful tender lined up for the back but dont think i will have time to go and get it.... SO there is soooooo much going on! This was just the short list! I tell you buying something like this and shipping it across the world is not an easy thing to get done and not sure i would do it again!

Oldskool: Thats me on the web site, my name is Robert Szarka hence Szarka Duo ... What i did until those idiots crushed me with a steel cage. Thanks for the compliments and well wishes!

Ozzie: I think i know but exactly what paperwork do i need to have ready when it gets to Australia?

Bill of sale and what else? How do they verify the bill of sale do they call the previous owners or the documentation person that did the yacht? I still have 6 weeks to figure all of this out, just thought i would ask in case you remember from when you did it and incase you can provide me some insight.

Oh the certificate all the refrigerant was removed.... cant think of any other documents i need?? Dunno why im getting so nervous and jittery right here at the end!

Attached bill of sale and uscg removal form to calm the skeptics...i blurred out the previous owners names to preserve their privacy as i dont know if they would want their names on the net... I was told the boat was un named, but apparently was named after one of their corporations so blurred that out too...

Those documents look forged.............just kidding.

How about Worlds Apart. This way you will always remember the journey and efforts it took to get this boat.

Definately "Sea Tiger" I saw the pictures of you training a tiger... Rob that's crazy! very impressive! If you can handle taming a tiger, you certainly can handle this boat......

Rob, I had no idea that you were in the circus. Sorry to hear that your career came to an end like that. I must say though that after seeing you in one of your youtube videos, you have a strong resemblances to Jon Blake the actor.

Paul, have no idea who Jon Blake is ...when i was younger people used to tell me i look like the guy that played Robin in one of the batmans he now plays in NCIS LA dont know his name either lol ... I unfortunately dont have the muscle mass i had anymore and walk with a limp now and then since the accident.

Cod: I had a bengal, a siberian, a leopard and a lion was around them from very young onwards. Grew up in the Bahamas on Paradise island where my dad managed the show in Merv Griffins Resorts INTL, its now Atlantis.... the animals were used in the illusions in the show. ONly ever got bitten twice both times by the leopard she was crabby lol. Once in the hand nearly lost my arm to infection and once in the head. this boat scares me more than the cats lol, spent all day on it today flipping switches learning things... Its quite intimidating there are so many systems and i want to do it right...each one seems like it needs its own little bit of regular maintenance.... so if anyone would be willing to share a monthly maintenance shcedule with me to help me on my way to figuring out how to upkeep this yacht properly that would be amazing!

There is a whole Searay bag full of manuals for all the systems, the bag must weigh 100 pounds lol ... Damn i have a lot to learn!! Different little things that dont work on it im finding out can easily be clogged filters, stuck switches etc and not necessarily a bad system. The airconditioner starts up but then shuts down after about 10 mins you hear the compressor kick on and then shuts down, during the seatrial i was told it was because it was not getting water. I believe it is to do with the water flow being blocked so going down there tomorrow to clean the sump and see if it works properly after.
Anyone got any ideas, the vacuum for the master head does not work. If i go back to the engine room when the breaker is on there is a funny sound...sounds like something going round and round ...only happens when the breaker for the head is on like something is stuck maybe. SO like i said seems like the small issues i have here and there are more maintenance and from the systems not being used than something actually wrong with stuff. The horn does not work, so i have one of those hand operated ones as i know you must have a horn. The glendining cable master does not go in and out so need to figure that out!

Gotta ask, is there something i should always leave on?? I took the keys and shut everything down today. Is that wrong are there certain systems that should be left running when you are not there? I know the bilge pumps are hardwired so not worried about that. But while going through the manuals i read something about leaving something on that charges the batteries when you are connected to shore power?

Just a bunch of stupid little things to fix like the vacuum thing, the AC not getting water ...and the water pressure is very low, again i think there might be something clogged because if the pumps were not working the water would not flow at all right?? The washer dryer has never been used once, but it wont turn on, i think after again reading manuals i have to enable something... Also the telephone intercom system has no power...might go and checlk all the fuses breakers.... the tachymeters jump around, cant imagine thats something big, maybe a lose wire or something..as sometimes they are steady and other times they hop all about... autopilot screen does not work but the system does.... so all little things.... the one big thing i could find is the hydraulic swim platform does not go up or down and apparently has never worked was installed a few years ago and never worked..supposedly its welded up ....weird... want to get that working... havent been able to get any work done as it is still at the previous owners dock and he did not want people coming and going which i understand so have just kind of stayed away until i move it in the next few days to a dock where some real work can happen.

Guys any idea what i should do to prep the vessel for shipping, should i spray some sort of anti rust on the engines and wd 40 on all the wire joints etc as it will be out on the ocean for 5 weeks in the elements on the deck of a ship ...any ideas suggestions would be great..

Awesome that the former owner kept every single manual for this thing for every system and he was nice enough to have the yacht washed and waxxed for me on day of delivery great guy!! FOund a zodiac in a bag under a seat, didnt even know that was there! The GPS chart plotter is an amazing tool its a standard horizon CP1000C great machine, need to buy a chip for australia!!

Damn where is Ozzie!!! Ozzie do i also need copies of the survey documents when it gets to Australia??

ANyone know of a good website where i can learn all about operating a VHF radio? Paul, what was the name of the course i need to take again back in Australia to get my license?

Anyone know what the best anti rust thing i can get to spray on things is? Is WD 40 good for the connections and wires that seem to have a bit of corrosion on them?

Is there anyone in the FT.lauderdale area that has a lot of experience with a boat this size and would like to take it out with me? I just dont have the guts to do it without someone in the know being there! Its impossible to take in and out solo thats for sure! I need to get it to a pump out station to empty the tanks and move it about 2 miles inland to a dock i will rent for a week. There is a station real close by.

Again, thanks all :) Love this board full of great people and you guys have helped me a lot!

Hi Rob,

Mate I gave you the link to the MROC VHF certificate course earlier in this thread but here it is again.

Your AC problem is probably a broken impeller, it is not an umcomon problem. It is really an annual inspection job to check it.

Your boat has been sitting in saltwater for a few years so I doubt you will need to worry about a rust inhibitor for the next 5 weeks.

I hope that there is a map chip available for your GPS/Chartplotter as if it is too old it may be a problem getting one.

Cheers

Paul

Well apparently it accepts C-map chips and is designed for it, from what i have read it doenst seem like i will have a problem getting the chips for it. Thanks gain for the link to the course Paul, thinking of starting it while i am still here so i can just take the test when i get home... stuck here till the 3rd of may now damn!!! like the never ending story i have been trying to leave for 2 weeks, will be a solid month by the time i get out of here!

You must be champing at the bit to get home by now Rob. You should have no problem getting a C-Map for Australia. I only bought one for my Navman GPS/plotter the other month which covers the whole of Australia. I think it was around $325.00 if I remember correctly.

Looks like we may have a buyer for our boat, keeping my fingers crossed on this one. Going to lose a bit on it to sell it but that is life.

Oh Jon Blake was an Australian actor that would have probably been as big as Mel Gibson if he had not had a car accident on the way back from filming The Light Horsemen in the early 80's. He will be in a vegitative state until he finally passes away, damn shame as he was a really good actor too.

I wish I was in your area and could take that boat out with you and go through all the systems. You do have a TON to learn. I can't imagine cramming in everything I've learned in 30 years of boating into a few short weeks. Still, it's better than working, THAT's for sure!

Hopefully some Fort Lauderdale folks will step up and take you through it. Make sure the person you decide to go out with has extensive experience in larger twin screw boats and isn't just looking for a joy ride. If they're from hear it'll be easier to confirm.

BTW, I'm concerned about your platform. If it were going to be easy to fix then I'm sure your wealthy seller would've done it. Welding it up is pretty radical and points to repairing it as a lost cause. Hope I'm wrong 'cus those things ain't cheap (Texas talk).

I would also advise getting that fuel issue fixed now with the engines (like start making phone calls today!). If you don't have working engines, you're going to be $hit up a creek! I never have heard of that 'ajax' treatment or whatever it was called, but most places go by the term 'polishing the fuel'. That may be what you need to look into. Fwebster may have some more info for you to help.

I would also start another thread separate from this one asking if anyone is close by you who could help. There is a lot to learn if you've never experienced a boat this size before.

Rob,

Ft. Lauderdale Marine Center is a large marina on the New River just on the East Side of Interstate 95. The marina is separate from the independent contractors on site. Basically there are companies that do anything you need, waxing, bottom painting, zincs, engine maintenance, AC repair, graphics, etc. I had my boat there and was pleased with service. I lived on the boat while it was on the hard for the week. I was able to plug the power in as they have power poles thru-out the marina. Just could'nt run the a/c but wasn't a problem in december. They have a captain's lounge with kitchen where you can relax at night, laundry room and showers. Price for the haul out was reasonable. Not sure your intentions but at a minimum, I would have all filters changed, fuel, water, oil and filter, zincs, water impellers if you don't have any history of when they were changed.

P.S. you want to leave the battery charger switch on. It may be labeled as "AC Converter"

If they welded up the platform, cross that off the todo list. You're not going to get that working in 2 weeks.
