Official 380 Thread

Does anyone, Don?, have expected performance for the 292HPs and they are definitely according to Cat 3126s! Plus that is what the label says.

Gator1,
I had the same thing done in March 2012 for $5800 in Pensacola @ BlueWater Canvas.

This is going to be a 29-31Kt boat at WOT. I'm not a diesel guy, but I would think it's going to be more important to get that oil sample and an engine survey than ever. The great thing is, fuel consumption on this boat is going to be so much better than the gas version, and if the survey checks out, long term maintenance will be a big plus as well. Good luck.

Hi,

I've read a lot about electronics upgrades on the forum but still don't know the best way to go. My second RL80c chartplotter/pathfinder radar died. I could pick one up on e-bay for about $800, but wonder if it wouldn't be better to upgrade everything...

Per the tech support staff on the Raymarine support forum, my radome will only work with the RL80c and similar models. This means if I want more current technology I'll also have to upgrade the radar and possibly the autopilot, gps, depth, etc.

Has anyone done a similar partial or complete upgrade on their 380? Any recommendations on brand, model, etc.?

Thanks,

Michael.

Hi Michael, I got the same story from Furuno and Raymarine. Protocols from our 2000 systems have been upgraded multiple times and the new displays are NOT backward compatible. The good news is, it is Boat Show season, and the new electronics are much better and faster. I am big Furuno fan, but or 15year old Raymarine/Raytheon equipment is still functional. When we ugrade I will lean toward Furuno, but look for the deal. Either of these system are pretty good.

I purchased a used open array radar that was compatible with the C120 chart plotter. I sold the RL80C I had which offset the cost of the C120. The autopilot and other Raymarine equipment worked just fine with the upgraded plotter. It's a option if you don't want to rip and replace everything.

I found the RL80c pretty much useless as a stand alone plotter but pretty good as a Radar display or as a secondary (zoomed out view) GPS. Mine still works so I kept it and mounted a Garmin 740s below it for GPS/Plotter and engine data display duties. If my RL80c takes a crap I'd probably consider a new large display and new array, and get it all connected to the NMEA 2000 network that now exists in the boat.

Thanks for great responses. I like the idea of getting a C120 classic and new scanner, but even that is going to be about 2 "boat units" ($2K). I just dropped 13 boat units on new engines, so I'm looking for ways to be frugal. If I go "new" then I want to be sure my Autopilot will work with the MFD.

What are the advantages of NMEA 2000?

NMEA2000 is like marine electronics networking for dummies. You pretty much connect components like you're connecting PVC pipe (minus the glue) and they all magically talk to each other.

Your autopilot is likely NMEA0183. Older technology but if your chosen new plotter has a connection for NMEA0183 you might be able to get your old AP to talk to the new plotter.

Did a thread on the install that might explain a little of the NMEA2k stuff...

Ron,

Nice job on the upated electronics. What's the protocol/requirement for the engine monitoring through the MFD? I have new (from factory) 454's that will use the original MAG MPI wiring harness and components... I'm wondering if I can install something similar. This would move me toward buying new rather than used. I also like the auto-oil change.

Thanks.

Thanks!

Don't think any 454's are compatible but I could be wrong. Might be worth a call to Mercruiser. Merc uses SMARTCRAFT to export data from the engine's computer. The Merc Gateway converts Smartcraft to NMEA2000. Lots of stuff to buy - probably $800 worth of gadgets, gizmos and cables.

I would have replaced the whole RL80crap with a comparably sized Garmin MFD but I only use RADAR to practice with it, it was big bucks to do all that replacement and the open array looks more bad-ass than a dome ;-).

How well did the C120 fit? Based on my calcs it's pretty tight for the current RL80 location.

width wise it was fine, but the C120 isn't as long, so I had a frame built for it to hide the 1/2 inch of space.

Dave, time to change your profile pic and info ;-)

Agreed, I need to figure out how to post a new picture.

Happy Spring!

I need to replace my battery charger (Promariner 30), and I'm trying to decide between the ProNautic 1230P & a ChargeMaster 12/35-3.
Anyone have an opinion?

I've really enjoyed the information available on this thread. We just took delivery of a beautiful 2003 380. 380 hours on the engines and 56 on the Kohler gen...

Has anyone mounted a rod holder on the side for a grill?

I have seen them, and we looked at a mount at West Marine that fit right n the factory rod holder. Also thought about a rod holder mount on the swim step rail (on the back storage locker lid). I really liked the idea of a pedestal with a floor mount under the swim step cover. Finally remembered we have an awesome generator and went with a round George Forman electric grill. It is easy to clean, fast to use, disassembles for easy storage, and I can cook with the canvass up.
