My new boat is having one installed soon. The service guy recommended putting the antenna (small dome) on the top of the dash just above the GPS. The dash is pretty flat there so the mouting would look professional. His 2nd choice was just in front of the compass but the top is curved somewhat and may not look as good. The 3rd choice is to mount it on the side bt the VHF antenna but he was afraid that it could get caught on something and cost of replacement is higher than the VHF antenna.

I've been thinking about just forward of the vhf antenna with the new Shakespeare 5187 ratchet mount and a 12" stainless extension to give it some height, then I'll use a Shakespeare 4184 stainless grommet where the cable enters the hull, just like the vhf antenna uses. I'm not crazy about the top of the dash, a leak there and water could foul things up or worse yet enter the cabin.
That sounds like a good idea. Having it on an extention protects the antenna better. I'll look into that. They haven't begun install yet.

How will the on dash antenna location affect gps operation when your canvas and isenglass is up? Otherwise that flat spot above the gps location is by far the easiest solution.

Good question. The installer suggested that spot probably for ease of installation. I'm going to have to talk with him and see about another location.
Thanks for the questions.

From a quick google search:
I have a 1985 Montauk. I [may buy a] Garmin 492 GPS, sold either with internal or external antenna. As I never have more coverage than a cloth bimini, is there any reason to think the internal antenna is NOT the right choice? I would mount the unit on the center console.
Does the external antenna offer any better satellite coverage. Buying today, any feeback appreciated.

I know several other Montauk owners have gone with the mushroom external antenna, just wondering why.

Thanks! Linda

You'll have no problems with the installing 492 with an internal antenna under a bimini. It will have no effect on reception.Tom

A woven fabric cloth such a typically used in boat canvas is transparent to the radio waves at the frequencies used in GPS reception.

The problem arises when you decide to mount the unit flush in the dash, not ON the dash. I'm looking at a Raymarine rc435 which is also available with internal antenna, and the manufacturer suggests using the external model for a flush mount application.

It doesn't look nearly as clean as flush mount but I mounted my lowrance unit on the bracket. I felt that while driving standing up it was hard to see the screen flush mounted. With the bracket I can adjust the unit up and down. I'll see if function wins over form.

After doing a search, and digging up a previous thread, I was wondering if anyone had actually modified their "rubber track" canvas and added snaps? Did you do it yourself or have it professionally done? I'm going to look into this in a month or so and get a price for it to be done.
I recall a storm coming up on the lake last year, and by the time I got the "Easy-up":smt013 rubber tracking in, the rain was coming down hard!

im thinking of doing the same thing. That rubber track thing is a big POS! What was wrong with simple easy snaps?!?! Im going to call a canvas place down by my marina and ask about a price. I'll keep you posted :)

Hi guys, I am new here and after visiting the boat show in Miami, Fl, I am debating between the sundancer 240 and 260. I know the price difference is very significance, however, I would like to know if any of you guys spend overnight on the 240 and how long does the battery last you if you do not have a generator? Is it possible to put the generator in the 240 or is it not needed?

I already have a deposit on the 240 sundancer. Looking to join the family.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Larry Welcome to CSR! You'll find more info here than you ever wanted to know. Its awesome for new boat ownwers (ask me how i know..) :)

We overnighted a LOT last year on our 240 but none on the hook away from shore power. The batteries will last quite a while but it depends on what you are running off of them. The nice part is you can select a battery (there are 2 on the 240) when you are anchoring so that you dont drain both at the same time. Ive spent a lot of time running on battery power with the radio going and lights in the cabin as the kids played. Never had a problem. The size from a 240 to a 260 is, i my opinion, negligible. Yes theres more space inside the 260, but again in my opinion, not worth the extra money. The 240 does eveything really well and its comfortable for my family (wife and 2 girls ages 7 and 4). Sure you'll always want more space but the 240 is a cruiser that offers a little bit of everything. You wont be disapointed.

papogator24, I just purchased a 240 in November of last year and so far I think it's going to be all the boat I'll need. In fact I'm planning to cross the gulf stream to the Bahamas in it. I swing on the hook regularly on my local lake for the weekends. A single battery will power light loads thru the night... refer, anchor lights, tv, fans, but generally only if the battery is full charged. In the morning that batt is usually knocked down pretty low. You'll end up running your main for charging during the day. You can do what I did and parallel two deep cycles on one leg of the batt switch and double your reserve capacity, and the other leg keep the starting batt. That way you always have a starting batt in reserve for starting if you do kill your deep cycles. This is what I do. I'm an energy monster though, the cd player alone will kill your batt. quick if you have a subwoofer. This is my opinion and you'll get plenty of them.
I don't think searay offers a generator option for the 240 but if you strap a portable gen to the.... well you'd better check out the posts for portable gens. before you do that.

Thanks for your input guys, I feel right at home. I was reading on some threads about having a portable generator but a few of them were highly against it??

My main concern about power is because I will have a sound system installed with 2 subwoofers, tv, cd, dvd, and etc. I wont be needing shore power because there is a waiting list to get a wet/dry slip.

Do you guys think I would be better off with a 260? I dont care about if the boat is bigger, just my main concern is electricity...gotta have A/C since Miami is so hot!

If money isn't the deciding factor, and size of the boat doesn't scare you then the 260 is the answer. You can get a factory installed gen set and power requirements solved. A battery wont last long against the power requirements for two subs and the afore mentioned items. Especially if your partying and forget (or pass out  ) to switch off the stereo. Many a jump is needed for just that senerio.

LOL, that is also another concern  :smt038

Well, I will take everything into consideration, I should be getting a call from MarineMax to finalize the deal. I can already smell the ocean from my computer :smt038

Good to see a sense of humor! There's to much political correctness in this world to not be able to laugh at ones self every now and then.

Well another thing is that I'm hearing impaired so you'll some posts :smt024 where I'll make fun of myself :smt043 Anyways, I am going tomorrow to check out the boat and hopefully have a sea trial as well.

The boat I am looking at is the 2005 260 with only 24 hours on the engine with a generator. Now I can party with my subs. I will post my experience tomorrow.

Quick question, If any of you have a subwoofer, where did you mount them? I have 2 10 inch subwoofer but it looks like I may only put one in, unless someone can find a place to put the 2nd.

If you arent going to have shore power, then definitely the 260 with a generator is the way to go. :) GOod luck and send pics when you close on the deal!
