Obsessing aboput cockpit table!

Wow...thanks for all the repsonses. I guess there is an enthusiastic market for better cockpit tables.
I've decided the following as a result of your suggestions (thanks!):
1)I will have my table custom made out of teak since I may add other teak upgrades in the future (want it to match)
2)I will take Henry's advice and make it 22" x 34" rather than round
3)I will have it properly coated with UV resistant epoxy
4)I will embellish it with the wood veneer compass rose in the center
5)I will forget about cup holders but like the idea of an edge to contain spills
6)I will post a photo of it as soon as it's finished!

Ha!
Thought: ....anybody do corian? That could be another option.

Somebody say Corian?

Works great! Got the slab online.

Tony,

You might give Scott Cambra at Vector imaging a call. Scott is one of our advertisers and does the dash panels. I have talked with him in the past about having him make custom inlays for table tops. He can make them and I believe he can also install them.

The type of onlay that was used on Bill Collector's table is very thin. The upside is that it is much easier to install than traditional routed in marquetry. The downside is that it must be installed perfectly as it may crack, or bubble. Additionally, you can never refinish the table as the onlay will sand off.

Since you don't have a B in L who will work for materials and drinks, and will definitely lay out a boat dollar for the table, get one made that will last you years.

An assoicate of mine who does some drafting and precision scenic building for me is also a guitar maker and formally trained wooden boat builder (http://www.krusaguitars.com/home.html). there is nothing this guy cannot do with his hands a piece of wood.We have talked about him building a custom table to replace my stock fiberglass one in the cockpit. He has a CNC router and could easily inlay the SR logo in the table which I think will be a nice touch. Probably Mahogany or Cherry with an Ebony logo. should be a nice subtle touch.

I will post pics when we are finished with the project.

While granite does emit some radon - like a lot of natural materials - it's not enough to cause problems. I think the biggest downside to granite would be the actual weight. I had some extra granite pieces made up when they did my house to use in an outdoor countertop and each slab was heavy - maybe 40-50 lbs each - that was a size about 24x30x2. I couldn't imagine trying to deal with that on a boat.

Now I didn't do the work, but I was involved in the process and yes the onlay is very thin by design but is somewhat durable. Is glued to the table and then we had the choice to build layers of polyurethane or go with the epoxy and get some immediate depth.... We went with epoxy and it can sanded down (not all the way mind you) but somewhat and refreshed on top.....

Well, I finally had my cockpit table custom made. It is teak and holly, with raised lips to prevent slippage and four cup holders with drain holes in the center.
I had a satin finish marine urethane applied, so I will get a few years out of it with no maintenance. I love it!

Very nice!

That is really really nice. Good job!

Thanks! I can't take my eyes off it whenever I'm in the boat now (except when I'm at the helm!).
I also ordered some teak flooring for the cabin...will post pic when it comes in.

I had a 24" Corian cockpit table made that matched the Corian around my cockpit sink and the galley. I think it was about 1" thick. Had a bullnose edge around the outside. Purchased a table base off the internet that was screwed/glued to the Corian. I can use the table leg and base that came with the boat. I stow the table top on the floor down in the cabin when I am not using it. I used a local countertop store to make for me. Looks great!! Wasn't cheap!!!

Interesting project. I have the new teak table that came with my 06 320. I had to resand it and applied some teak protectant this year. I am wondering if I should apply some marine epoxy to keep it from getting stained with cold drink circles. I don't mind resanding it every year though. Thoughts?

That looks great. Nice touch.

Here is mine, it is made with Red Mahogany and stained with red Mahogany stain to enrich the color. Everyone that saw it at CSR Inner Harbor last weekend loved it.

It was made the same size as the original table supplied with the boat, so I still use the old table cover to protect it when I am not onboard.

Rhodyboater do you mind sharing the cost of the replacement and where you had it done? It's a really great looking table and I agree with your thought process 100%. I want one!!
