My Sandy Story

The CT crew could have gotten into the marina. Clear the personal stuff off the boat, get a check from the insurance company, go shopping for an oil burner.

That was my plan! Did I say that out load again??? If our pilings were just 1 ft lower, I'd be boat shopping..... :)

At the recommendation from Brian, the owner fo Dillan's Creek marina in Island Heights NJ, I kept my boat in the water... Before the storm, Brain told me: "Fill your water tank. When the electric goes out you will be able to take a shower". He told me he was leaving his own 310 DA in the the water, and he was launching boats to put back in their slips. Thank God for good advise, my boat only had some very minor scratched from the hittin ght tops of my pilings. the pilinig on my dock are about 10' from the water line, and the water reached the caps on the top of the pilings about 9' up... My boat did fine, and based on hind sight, leaving it in was the right decision. It does depend on the storm, but for the Sandy and Irene, leaving her in was the right choice. I did have my 190 Sundeck on its trailer by my garage, and it did fine too, only becaue of the elevation of my property.

I was very sorry to hear about the Lill Krissy, and I know that most likely, do to the age of Ron's boat, she will be totaled. Also, Ron won't get the money from the insurance to replace her. Good used boats will be in very short supply in the North East for next 10 years. In fact, If I had to guess, the price of used boat across the US will increase based the how many boats will be totaled due to Sandy...

Ron

As you know, my boat is in a marina just a few doors up from Green Cove (directly behind the pilot house) and seems to have been untouched by the storm, which I am very thankful for.

My shore house wasn't as lucky, but at least it is still standing. I worked on the deck for almost 2 years and just installed the railings last month, it is completly twisted now and the pool is ruined - and is not covered by insurance.

Besides all the obvious damage we have to address I have been thinking about what next summer may be like on Barnegat bay. My first thought was will I be able to get my boat back to my house without running aground? I am sure all the channels have been affected and charts can not be relied on. Who knows what is sitting under the water? The ocean brought 3 + feet of sand up onto the barrier islands and dumped just as much into the Bay. Given that Barnegat bay is only about 5 foot deep on average I wonder how much will be navigable? I was able to get a question into the Governor's office asking if the clean up will include fixing damage/ dredging the bay. I am waiting for an answer.

Then I started thinking about where I would fuel up and spent some time looking at these photos http://storms.ngs.noaa.gov/storms/sandy/ Drum Point Marina is completely gone, and it looks like the fuel dock over by Bayhead (at the mouth of the Point Pleasant Canal) is also gone and I am not sure if Hinkley's will be operational. Doesn't look good.

Vince, What a ashame your home got so damaged. We are only few miles south of you and I have no damage at my home. Other homes in my area did not do so well...

There are places near me where you can get gas. East Dover Marina, Light House Point (where Alex is) and Shore Point in Beachwood. I don't think Ocean Gate or Good Luck Point did so well, but I am not sure... But I plan on fueling my boat up at my dock.

You are right about being careful not to run a ground considering all the potential changes in the channels the debris, and the sunk boats. At beach, on the bay, at the en of my road, there is 40' boat in the woods. The good news is there won't be much boat traffic, and the further south you go, the storm casued less damage. The Chesapeake was untouched, and south of AC is fine. Also, from the pictures I saw of the Barnegat Light it looks fine...

Anybody know if Coty Marine was damaged? They have gas over there as well.

It was damaged. Their boat yard was mess with boats everywhere after the storm. There was a broken boat lift that boat fell out of. There were boat across the road too...

Just a shame. Finally NOAA got pics of my marina. Here is is after 5 or 6 days or cleanup. You can see my boat circled in red near the middle left.

I actually got them from my Marina facebook page. I try to find it Rick. But I know there was a NOAA site that had these but my marina was one of the holes they had. So this has to be taken within the last 2 days cause ALOT of cleanup has happened.

The images shows nothing wrong with my marina or boat. From oct, 31- present
