Month long trip through New England - Planning

Dc 380 you should of seen it last August, the wind was blowing and boats were breaking free and running up on shore and into other boats. Even the town moorings were dragging and the harbor master was telling people to grab private moorings if needed.

I was there that evening. I was on mooring Ball #2. Just off of Payne's. The wind and waves flipped my dinghy over, the engine sat under water for a few hours until I could flip it over and flood the engine with WD40. I should have put it on the davits.

I was real concerned we would drag the mooring we were on. That was a one long night.

That was the third and last trip we took with the new for us 380. That's also the trip we learned about alumium manifolds. Thankfully that episode (thanks to FrankW!!) ended well.

We're hoping this summer will bring more trips and be less eventful.

We just got our reservation for Block Island. We are staying at Champlins arriving Thursday the 24th and leaving Sunday the 27th. She said there was some "event" there that weekend. I'm sure the teenagers I have will enjoy the craziness. And I'm sure the weather will suck...

Still have not heard from Sag Harbor... I extended Block Island by a day and may just skip it and head somewhere else...

Greenport or Montuak are easy runs from Block.

Greenport is my personal favorite. You can stay right in town at the town marina or at Townsend Manor Marina 1 mile from Town, but with an on premise Pool and resturant.

Sounds like another great trip in the making. Regarding AC area, only two to be considered: Trump or Seaview Harbor in Longport. Seaview has been very difficult to get transient slips as of the last few years but this year should be OK as a few 50 footish yachts have pulled-out. We keep out boat there - private pool, easy to get to Margate or Ocean City, NJ and right on the inlet.

Hey Gary -

For your New York stop I would recommend Liberty Landing Marina. It's on the Jersey side just north of Lady Liberty and across from The Battery on the southwest side of Manhattan. It is a world class marina and well protected from the rock & roll of The Hudson. The views of Manhattan are stunning (and I don't toss that word around easily). There is a fantastic restaurant right there at Liberty State Park and the ferry to Manhattan runs right from the marina. It is not cheap, but there are really no inexpensive options in the area that are worthwhile. If you are fixed on staying on the city side, The North Cove would be your choice. It's a popular spot for the megayachts but is susceptible to more rock & roll and the views aren't nearly as good as they are from the other side. The cheapest fuel in the area, to my knowledge, has traditionally been at the Alpine Boat Basin, but that's just north of the George Washington Bridge, so unless you were going to head up that way the trip is probably not worth the savings.

Happy Planning!

+1 to Liberty Landing...the Mrs dad keeps his boat there and it's a nice place. If you like I can pass along his contact info as he loves guests and loves to show folks the city.

Hey Dave, why dont you come over to greenport in August. Turtle and hopefully others will be spending some time there as a mini csr get together. Early August.

Dave

I'll be there 1 day on the weekend, at a mimimum.

My wife just got a new job, and she has to wait to see if she can take the week off. She's low man on the totem pole.
If she can get it off, we'll come for 4-5 days with the 380.

If not, friends from Connecticut, have invited us to take a criuse over to Greenport that weekend.

So one way or another (By Chapparal or Sea Ray) we'll see you there.

Dave

We are already confirmed at Liberty Landing (and they already charged my credit card). I also have 6 tickets to "Wicked" for one night but I am trying to get some David Letterman tickets for just the wife and I the other day we are there... Anyone got any connections?... I wrote in like they tell you to do but have heard nothing back.. If not, I'll take her out on a date somewhere else... Is there anything to do in NYC? Like a comedy club or something... Don't want her to think I'm serious.

they take awhile to get back to you, but I've never known someone not get the tickets they requested. Just don't arrive late because they will give your seats away in a second.

Hmm. By now, your wife probably already knows if you are serious or not -- heaven help you. I understand that they don't roll up the sidewalks and turn off the lights in NYC at 9pm anymore, so there might be things to do. I'll check with my wife tonight. She's more into NYC than I am. Despite having worked there with offices on Wall St. in the Chrysler building, on Park Ave and at Penn Plaza (all over the place), I'm not really a New York person. My favorite place in NYC is right under the big green sign that says: "Lincoln Tunnel - To New Jersey." Last time I was in such a hurry to get out that the Port Authority cops nailed me for 75. Oh well. Glad I got that "get outta jail free card."

BTW, if you think fuel and marinas on this jaunt are expensive, you have not taken a date into NYC, yet. The turtleman must have an expense account for his dates.

Best regards,
Frank C.

Just like boating, it costs $25/hour per person for every hour you walk outside your front door. That's if you live here, I have no idea what it could run if you are visiting. Maybe double?

I also called up Nantucket Rental Car and got a Jeep Commander for a few days... I figure it'll be nice to be able to drive around the island since we are there for 5 days. I did that last year when we were in Annapolis for a week and it really adds a lot to the trip as you are not "stuck" at the Marina and vicinity. Plus we get to drive it on the beach!

I will say that when the guy gave me the rate I thought it was for the week... it was for the DAY! OUCH!

When you and the admiral are out on your date night, maybe you should give each of the boys a tin can and sit them on the curb in NYC....you know...to kind of help out with the trip's expenses....and don't forget the dogs....an old piece of clothes line around thier necks for a leash...just for a little 'touch'....
