Month long trip through New England - Planning

I'm open to Essex and it was on the original list of places to visit. However, we know some people in the Hamptons that we wanted to see...

Also got our tickets for the Broadway play "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theatre for July 30th so we better be in NY by that date... anyone seen that?

My wife saw Wicked last month and said it was very well done.

Here's a list of the Goth clubs in New York. You may want to call ahead and make reservations. I think wed is ladies night, free black lipstick.

* Alien-Nation, Albany, NY
* The Abyss, Albany, NY
* Hex, Brooklyn, NY
* Nokturna Sundays, Ithaca, NY
* Abstraction, Mineola, NY
* Albion, New York, NY
* Contempt, New York, NY
* The Black Abbey, New York, NY
* Vertex, Rochester, NY
* Decay NY, Utica, NY
* Deconstructed, Woodside, NY

Mike, I don't know what's scarier. That you know about these places or that you know about them and the Met concerts in the park. I'm hoping that you're just really, really good with Google.

Best regards,
Frank

After paying all these slip fees (in advance no less), we won't have any money left for goth clubs... Jeezz... and I thought fuel was expensive.

You may want to bail on Sag Harbor due to availability and try Essex Cn. instead (voted best small town in New England)

This place is awesome and is a good stepping stone heading west from Block Island on your way to NYC.

Actually, I already have Essex on my calendar as a one night stand. We are planning on stopping there between Sag Harbor and NYC. It's a Monday night so I don't think I'll need to book that one this early.

Thanks... was wondering if that one was worth the stop.

Gary, I think I may be more excited than you; can't wait to begin reading your adventures. I was glued to your posts last year crusing the Chesapeake...something we want to do, someday. But I might need a bigger boat...

Oh, and that photo book link is awesome! I'm going to look into that out for some of our events and trips.

Tom

Thanks... You may want to find another hobby though if that was exciting. I would suggest drugs or alcohol...

The print version of that book turned out very nice. I know Skip and his wife do those books as well.

I really liked your photo book. I think I'm going to make one for this boat season.

p.s. Have your dogs eaten the chartplotter yet?

What's the fishing like up around Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard/Block Island?

I found this: http://www.capttom.com/Page.aspx?url=Seasons

May have to do a little fishing with the Four Suns one or two of the days... yummy. Fresh Tuna steaks on the BBQ...

There is a shoal coming off the east point of the island that extends out more than a mile. You are guaranteed to catch Blues there. With a little skill you will catch stripers. You have to get down deeper for the stripers. There are false albacore there too. All you have to do is troll over the shoal from downcurrent and you will hook up every time, morning, afternoon, and evening. Everywhere else on the island is a toss up. The west end of the island is very productive also, but since you don't know the area, stay away. Its very dangerous, even in a shallow draft boat. Check out the charts. You can be grounded hard, a very unfortunate end to your trip. Watch out for the shoals offshore on the south side of the island also. I've seen waves breaking a mile from shore. Fishing those can be tempting and I'm sure they are loaded with many 50 pounders. Don't take any advice from the bait shops on the island. They'll sell you everything that isn't catching anything. They will also send you to all the wrong places.

Many of my reservation confirmations have come in the mail. The Broadway tickets for "Wicked" also got here. I also got my paper Maptech charts delivered today for the area up there. My 16 year old son has also given me the weather report for our trip across Nantucket Sound out to the island:

E WINDS 30 TO 40 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 KT. SEAS 10 TO 12 FT. THUNDERSTORMS.

The confirmation from Nantucket Boat Basin came today. In a separate mail, I got a hand written note from the manager of the boat basin saying they looked forward to "Four Suns" visit. Very nice touch...

I still have not done anything with Block Island. Any suggestions on that? I probably need to reserve something since we will be there on a Thursday and Friday night. What marina is good to stay at? Is it better to use a mooring?

The family is getting very excited about this trip now... darn boat better be good for another 1400 NM...

Over the last 2 years if you dont get a mooring by wed morning you wont have one for the weekend, and even that is pushing it now. Most will set the hook and at dawn as the sailors leave you must scout on your dinghy and grab it. Then bring the boat over. If you like a party, a crowd, and being part of a raft up 4-5 deep then champlins is your spot. They will always find room even at the busiest times. I would think by now the boat basin is booked. Let me know when your coming up, I will be up there through out the summer and if you call me and I'm there I will grab one for you.(a mooring ball)

Oh, if you dont get a few more reservation confirmations soon for your summer trip, Turtle and I will see you in Greenport

Gary with 4 kids the best place is Chaplins Marina. They take reservations and they have a pool, Ice Cream, Pizzeria and a theater on the premise.

They may raft other boats to you, and except for 1 floating dock, they're mostly fixed piers. They have 50amp service and water.

The mooring are first come first serve. They tend to free up around 9:00-10:30am. They fill up pretty quickly.
There aren't that many mooring that can hold your size boat.

The Boat Basin are all floating docks, but not much to do for the kids. They also take reservations.

Dave

Its Champlins not chaplins, all the town moorings will hold the weight of a 48, the swing is the only concern on some of the closer balls. I'm 51 overall and have had a 38' rafted to me for a weekend on the light weight mooring balls(lime green) yes there are a limited amount of orange balls which hold much larger boats. overall not enough balls to go around.lol Reservations are great! providing they have availability. Slim pickens is my guess for the boat basin. Depending when you go, I would warn against dropping the hook, every time we go if there is a blow, boats break free or drag into other boats due to the amount of crowding. Good luck!

July 24th through the morning of July 28th is the time I have penciled in for Block Island and Sag Harbor. I need to figure out both of those spots. I'll give Champlins a call in the morning. My boys would obviously rather be around people than "peace and quite". I sent some email off to yacht club in Sag Harbor to see if they took transients and they never responded... not sure what to do about that.

Sag harbor does take transients at 5.00 a ft, call champlins you will get a spot, who knows where? their like American airlines. Everyone gets a seat. Oh, its all noisy, lots of bars and drinking and great food. But dc380 is correct about the boys having a goodtime at champlins. you can take a cab to town.

where's you spontaneity? show up and see what happens.

I stayed at Malloy Sag Harbor marina once. They take reservations. There's also a first come first serve municipal marina, I've also stayed at, but as I recall, (It's been awhile) there was no water or electricity.

I agree with Dave, I wouldn't anchor at Block, everytime I've evey been there, it's blown good at least one night.

Someone told my Malloys was closed or something... That's why I was trying to get into the yacht club there.
