Made the Offer 50DA!

I hope all goes well, or at least better than my first "deposit on a boat before I saw it myself" deal went. Pictures all looked good, words all looked good, price was good.....got on the boat...within SECONDS the deal was off....keep us posted and good luck....

Dominic I hear you! I have dealt with this MM salesman before and i told him in the words of Gen. Patton " I will skin you" if the boat is not right. It probably didnt help but I felt better. If It goes belly up we will just start again. I have a little more exp now but a lot left to learn. Lets just hope this boat pans out. Thanks DOM, JC

Guys Iam answering(venting) myself. Trying to find, buy a big solid old SR has me feeling like I just fought Big George Formen. Been talking, planning etc... engine surveys etc... All Day. :smt021
Cant wait to see the boat myself to see if its a go. JC

The good thing is you can always walk away from the deal if it is not the right boat for you. You are out a plane ticket and a couple days but it is better than getting a bad boat. You are getting great advise from some of the best, there is nothing else you can do until you see the beauty and make the final decision. You will be fine.

Thanks for the support WES! I really, really thank all those who have helped. I feeling a little better even now! :smt043 JC

BigAL thats the one. Will certainly know more by Friday afternoon. Thanks BigAl for the encouragement! JC

Well I wont bore everyone with the full details but what a night mare. :smt009 Flew in after getting up at 2:45est and was at the boat by 11am. The boat was well represented fromthe photos etc... All the things Frank and the other great guys had suggested I checked them out with the gusto of a kentucky coon dog. The boat was actually in better shape than i expected. So we go back to the MM office to talk and the salesman tells me he has some strange news. The owner has changed the contract and wants to do a one day engine survey because it will save time. I tell the nice salesman thats a no go and how did she change the contract? He hands me a copy of said contract and she has taken a pen and drawn a line thru my name and put a new closing date down and put her name. I inform the salesman that now we have no contract and iam leaving and to wire my $ back to KY. He calls this nice owner who apparently wears the piants and i can hear her yelling at him that she is going to take the listing away from him and she will pick the surveyer and get this taken care of. I couldnot believe this was going on. I was very tired so i told salesman that i thought we could just forget about this one and left. In about 2 hrs the salesman calls and said the owners had a change of heart but wanted to know what kind of survey took three days and they wanted to call them and get results when it was over. To say the least i was infuryated(sp) and went to Key Largo. Turned my phone off and flew home. Today salesman calls and says they still want to talk to survey person but will settle for gar close ist week in Feb. Iam so mad, its, well bad. The boat appears to be in good condition and I liked it but there are alot of 500DA out there for sale. Got a call on a 95 today that owner really wants to move. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!! JC and I left a bunch of Stuff out. Forgive my spelling guys , i cant really spell on a good day let alone when iam tired. :smt015

Look at the 95. seller is wasting your time, and money. some nerve telling you how to spend your money, and interfering. take it as a sign and move on, for it wont be the last interference with that seller. you choose the surveyor!

Welcome to the class called "Boat Buying 101"...............its an OJT course.

I don't know how to head off a fickled, crazy seller at the pass, but I'd be tempted to tell the salesman, "Look, I loved the boat and you had it sold and I'd have done this deal, until your seller started making decisions for me".

On sharing the results of a survey with the seller, that is a work product that you rightfuly own and you are under no obligation to share it with anyone, certainly not the financial and cost parts. However, if you use a survey to cancel a buy/sell contract, while you are within your rights to just say "I'm cancelling the contract because the survey results were not acceptable", it is reasonable to give a seller the details of what you found unacceptable.

On the '95.....if she has Detroit power.....same song second verse.

Frank & Guys i still appreciate all of you so much! It is still very frustrating! I dont know what i could have done different. She changed a 2nd contract and said thats what counted. I dont think the salesman knew until that morning i was flying in. I did talk to a bunch( 5 or 6) Detroit DIES owners. It was intresting to hear their thoughts on them compared to what i hear on the boards. Every one of them said they had not had a bit of trouble with them. The common thread thou seamed to be " GREAT REGULAR MAINTANCE"! They agreed that if the engine compartment and other things looked bad, RUN, RUN very fast. So here Iam AGAIN looking for a boat. I have not told MM the deal is off yet, I wanted to sleep on it. Thanks Guys JC

Based on the sellers attitude thus far, I'd say pushing this one to closing will be a tough uphill and stress filled job......and God forbid, the Detroit guy finds a problem. It'll be all your fault !

Get your money back before doing anything else on this one, and remember that there are a lot more boats out there......you probably just have not found the best one for you yet.

I vote to cut your losses on this one and chalk it up to experience. Even if you could sucessfully buy this boat, the seller will continue to make it a difficult experience.

So sorry to hear things didn't work out. It's for the better. The seller sounds like a real...you know :smt013 . You are definately in the drivers seat. Dont get pushed into a bad deal. Good luck.

JC-

I'm thinking any seller that is that nervous about the survey process is more than likely hiding something and is gunshy about you or your surveyor finding the problems said seller is aware of. Anytime someone wants to rush your due dilligence, especially by offering to call a surveyor for you that can handle the process in one day versus your three day, knows that all of the skeletons will be found - let alone her apparent desire to rush the closing date.

When I sell Miss T someday, it will be full disclosure from my annual oil insepctions, most recent survey, warranty work, equipment replacements, etc. I have that confidence in my boat and her history, and someday when I meet her new owner, I will be excited to share that information as validation to the buyers surveys and inspections.

An eager, desperate seller is always a bad sign - boats, houses, cars, etc.

Just my $0.02.

JC,
For what my opinion is worth , I really agree with Jeff. There is something in the closet that she is hiding. You know, if it sounds like a duck and looks like a duck ----------------Run......don't walk......run. Lots of great boats out there, you will find the one that is right for you......LUCK!!

I also agree with what was mentioned before. You are not throught with that seller, and I believe it is quite possible that other bad surprises could be expected.

You said it, many other 50DA's out there for sale.

You have boat fever at the moment. Step back assces the situation and then run from this boat. Tell the sales people not to call you back period on this boat. Everytime they call boat fever will reoccur and cause you much emotional pain which in the end might cause you to make a poor decision.

Find what YOU want on YOUR terms. Something will come along in time that will be a much better choice, Cats

Good Luck

I agree with you Paul.. we all know the fever, one more than the other but.
But also on Cats you have to survey!
You never know what is wrong or right before you did some proper survey.
These engines on boats cost too much money to gamble.

You don't have to give up on this one, just be clever and indeed tell the salesman what you want one more time and if negative tell him to send your money back.

Just my $0.02

Peter

Update: We cancelled the contract. Now we will start over. Learned alot tho. Already on the trail of the next boat! Thanks again everybody for your great help! JC
